Chapter 23- "Disastrous" Mission Complete

Third person POV
'I hope Amon and Mado are alright!' Yuki worriedly said.

Yuki ran and ran, panting and almost breathless for once. Her thighs burned and her calves felt weak, telling her to stop before too much lactic acid would build up, but she didn't care. She has to back up her comrades in missions like now and in the future.

Still, her heart ached immensely when she thought back to her battle with Fumiko. It was challenging in terms of emotionally rather than physically. Yuki couldn't believe herself for a moment when she lost herself and became a completely different person. Yuki felt terrified of herself.

A water droplet hit her cheek, surprising her for a bit. Stopping for a quick second, she looked up into the dark sky to witness the stars disappearing behind the dull grey clouds of rain.

Yuki cried as she embraced the rain, but quickly threw away her needless emotions to continue running to her destination.

"Ah...!" Yuki's footing became unstable and gasped as she hit the ground. Her eyes trembled and her limbs shook. She bolted back up to her feet and blinked in the rain, holding up her hand to shield over her eyes.

Squinting, Yuki tried making out the group of figures in the distance, but failed to grasp hold of their features. She could only grab onto the faint colors of their clothes.

"I thought I saw Ken... I must be stupid! They're probably citizens just trying to escape the rain...!" Yuki chuckled to herself bitterly and face palmed sadly. She let out a sigh and broke out into a dash to continue following after Amon's trail.

"Ah! They should be around this corner—"

"AAAAAAARRGGRRRHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Yuki jumped in surprise of the loud and deep scream, shutting her eyes tightly while wincing. It was painful to hear because of the volume, but even more agonizing when the voice sounded deeply in pain as if they lost part of their world they cherished immensely.

Yuki slowly opened her eyes and dropped her weapon once she took in the image in front of her. She dreadfully walked over to the two figures with tears cascading her cheeks and her eyes large in denial. Her knees had finally given up its strength and gave in. Yuki fell into the slot of water, scrambling over to her comrade.

"A-aah! This can't be happening...!" Yuki exclaimed, her breath hitching in her throat.

She looked at her friend who tightly hugged the corpse of his superior and father like figure.

Amon couldn't stop yelling and crying in agony of the loss of someone important. He refused to let go of the still warm body.

"A-Amon..." Yuki whispered, hugging onto him in comfort of the cold atmosphere.

"I'm sorry..." Yuki felt guilty of actions and timing.

"...." Amon was unable to speak, still paralyzed over the death of Mado.

"Let's go... Let's go and take Mado's body to CCG...." Yuki weakly said.

"......" Amon's head was hanged low.

"Let's go..." Yuki sniffled, hugging onto Amon a little bit more tightly.

"... Yeah... Let's bring him back home..." Amon painfully said, picking up Mado's corpse.

Yuki placed her hand onto Amon's back in comfort as they exited the old and musty area. They entered into the heavy rain and had their tears camouflage as falling blue crystals to adapt to their new environment.

Yuki sent their location to the headquarters of CCG for transportation and an ambulance. They waited at a nearby building to shelter from the rain.

It was silent between the two, but their hearts and minds were the complete opposite from calm and quiet. Not even the sound of the rain around them could drown out their sorrow of this day.

Hearing the ambulance in the distance, Yuki very slowly drew her head back up to wait for the appearance of the vehicles.

Once the ambulance and car arrived, the medics instantly got to their work. They placed Mado's body into a bag used to transport corpses and put him up into a stretcher and away into the back of the vehicle.

Amon clenched his fists when Mado's body disappeared from his sight. The ambulance drove off first, leaving the two with their fellow investigators.

Coming out of the black car, two investigators walked up towards Amon and Yuki. The two of them handed them a towel and began questioning the two.

'It's not like this towel will do anything. I'm soaked wet from the rain.' Yuki internally sighed.

"I ran over to my comrade's location after dealing with the ghoul X. I'm sure you heard I reported the whereabouts of the corpse." Yuki answered, earning a nod from the man.

"Mado-san is a great investigator, but his excitement to go after another ghoul while on an assigned mission isn't allowed. Especially since it wasn't like your case Amon. He wasn't being attacked by the ghoul." One of the two investigators ended and opened an umbrella for the two to enter the car.

Amon allowed Yuki to enter first, entering after her. The car ride was extremely silent that it could be used as a sharp weapon for to stab out a vital organ.

"Miss Kaneki. Your solo work was excellent in bringing down X. We are interested in your report of how you brought down the ghoul." The investigator driving said, his tone quite proud of the girl.

"Oh, thank you." Yuki forced a small smile and urged her hands to stop trembling. She hid her hands further in her wet sleeves.

Amon noticed the awkward smile on Yuki's face and glanced down at her hiding her hands. His eyes gazed at her in concern before turning his attention out the window.

'My first mission seems to be a success, but in truth... It's a disaster for myself and even for Amon. I wonder what will become of me...' Yuki leaned further back into the seat, shutting her tired eyes and opening her ears to hear the rain cry.

"I'm home~...." Yuki dragged out monotonously, taking off her still soaked shoes.

She sighed as her hair and clothes dripped water onto the ground before her.

"Ken~! Can you grab a towel for me? I got caught in the rain!" Yuki called out to, waiting by the door for a minute.

"Ken...?" Yuki weakly said, walking away from the doorway.

With each step, she made a mark of wet footprints. Footprints with a heavy burden and hope being trailed off and scattered on the ground.

"Ah...!" Yuki stopped walking, creating a small puddle around her.

"... He must be staying over night at Anteiku....."

"Hah~... This sucks...!" Yuki's knee slumped down to the wooden floor, and her hands leaned out forward to catch herself from making full contact with the ground.

*Drip drop*

"Was this how Ken felt when I'd always leave home and wander the streets...? It's so lonely here...." Yuki cried, her tears blending into the puddle of water.

After another crying marathon, Yuki picked herself up and walked towards the bathroom. She stripped off her clothes and turned on the shower. The hot water ran through her hair and down her back, warming her body from the cold of the rain. Still, she felt cold in the inside of her body.

She exited the shower and threw on some pajamas and a sweater. Yuki wrapped a towel around her head and walked into the kitchen.

Yuki opened the fridge and reached her hand out to an apple, but immediately drew her fingers back once she brushed over it.

"..... *Sigh*" Yuki closed the fridge and began to brew herself some coffee.

"... 'Is it that you don't your own identity'... 'Don't forget who you really are'..." Yuki recited from Nike and Yushin, her head tilted up.

"*Sighs* I really am in denial..."
—————

"She fulfilled her mission without her team. Her deadline for her report of details is in three days." The investigator that drove Yuki and Amon back to their respective places said.

"Thank you. You are excused." A deep and monotone voice answered as the male exited the room.

"She's performing better than I imagined."
