Chapter 11- Hiding the Truth
Third person POV
Under the moon's bright and calming light, sleeping beauty had slowly awoken. Her beautiful silver eyes bloomed opened as her body remained still. That was until she jolted up in fear.
"I need to find-..... Ken?" Settling back down, Yuki blushed knowing that Kaneki was with her ever since she... Well was in her sleep.
Yuki was extremely confused and worried. She wondered where she was at and why and how she's in bed with Kaneki resting next to her.
Smiling, Yuki brushed the stray hair off of Kankei's face and chuckled lightly like spring's breeze. Slowly and carefully, Yuki got out of bed and gently put Kaneki into the bed since he clearly was exhausted and tucked the sheets over his chest. Touching his forehead to check his temperature, she nodded her head in approval and kissed his exposed skin in a sisterly way. She sat on her knees and watched Kaneki sleep peacefully for awhile and began wondering to herself.
"Hm? Since when did he start wearing an eyepatch...? Was it because of the incident?" Her fingers brushed over his eyepatch.
'Is this where you were when I arrived home...? Did you find and save me from that ghoul? Are you feeling guilty? You're still talking to Hide, right...? What happened while I was asleep? I really miss you Ken.' Gently taking his hand, she felt the hand to be more firm and rougher than how she remembered.
"Has he been working out...?! I feel even more guiltily yet so proud..." Eyes that followed the dust to the ground, Yuki sighed and looked back at Kaneki's peaceful face with a wondrous smile. She tightened her hold on his hand and loosen it as she quietly snuck away.
Opening the door to illuminate light into the dark room, she looked out into the hallway and smelt the warm and delicious aroma. Looking back at Kaneki, she closed the door and walked down the small hallway.
'It smells really delicious... It smells like well-blended coffee. This smell of coffee, it reminds me of... Anteiku!'
As she was about to take her steps down the stairs, she was stopped by a harsh female voice. But, the voice wasn't directed towards her face to face.
"Manager! Why did we bring her in here!? Do you know how dangerous this is!" The voice sounded kinda familiar to Yuki. It was somewhat harsh but her voice held concern.
"Touka-chan... She was injured and was attacked by a ghoul. We must attend to her. It isn't right to standby and let her bleed to death." What a calm and kind voice, coming from an elderly man. Yuki wished that she could see who they were right now.
"But manager-"
"No more Touka. We must accept her here. No questioning right now."
"I don't understand... Tch..." The sound of disapproval, dishes, and a chair screeching as it was pushed back was all Yuki heard from the room. Taking in a silent breath, she took the steps down the stairs and tried to look surprised.
"A-ah! Hello! Um... From seeing your uniforms, thank you for sheltering me and bandaging me up. I really appreciate it." Bowing respectfully, Yuki held confusion in her eyes. She was confused because she's never knew since when Kaneki would get to know these people. The last time she came here was when it seemed as if they wouldn't have known those who worked here at Anteiku.
'Maybe they're also just helping Ken, like how they're helping me...'
"It's no problem Miss Kaneki. It's a pleasure for us to help you. I'll make some coffee. Is there anything you'd like in particular?"
"U-um if you don't mind, I'll have some iced coffee. I prefer cold drinks. Thank you."
"I'm sure you have questions. I'll make your coffee and I'll answer them as best as I can." Walking away from the counter and into the kitchen, Yuki was alone with Touka who seemed very displeased with her presence.
Staring at the counter for a few seconds, Yuki realized something. "Oh!" Yuki's random outburst made Touka flinch. "Sorry, but I think I remember you!" A flash of caution came into view of Touka's eyes. "You were our waitress when I was here last time!"
"O-oh! Yeah... You were with Kaneki and that guy who tried hitting on me." Touka still held a stiff face and was extremely nervous. She didn't know if Yuki would remember bumping into her and she was worries if she would be found out.
"Haha! That's Hide! He's mines and Ken's best friend! He's really silly but super smart! I'm just kinda concern since I can't remember much. Guess I lost a lot of recent memories..."
"Huh?" Touka's eyes searched Yuki's sorrow filled face and was quite shocked to hear that Yuki lost some memories. "What do you mean you lost a lot of recent memories?"
"Eh...? Oh, well because of a ghoul incident I was involved with Ken, I was sent into a coma for about two weeks or so and when I woke up, I couldn't remember anything relating around the timeline when the mishap occurred. This is so frustrating! Oh! I almost forgot! My name is Kaneki Yuki! What's your name?"
With uncertainty in Touka's nerves, she cautiously spoke. "... Touka Kirishima..."
"Woah! Your name sounds pretty~! Since you guys call Ken with our surname, call me Yuki! I don't want to confuse others!" Touka didn't know how to handle such beautiful and bright child-um adult. She was really nervous and it was visible in her eyes.
"I'm sorry if I'm making you feel uncomfortable..." Yuki's eyes dropped a bit, making Touka kinda feel guilty.
"I-it's not like that! You're just really cheerful! U-um-u-ugh!" Showing her tsundere side, Touka was blushing madly in embarrassment with a disguise of a scowl.
"Pfft! Ahahahaha! I'm sorry-... For laughing! You're like a tsundere!"
"No I'm not! Stop it!" Slamming her fist onto the counter, Touka felt super embarrassed. Someone beautiful, kind, and positive is chatting with her. Touka had not felt this way before in a while with another individual.
"You know, you're actually really cool! Your eyes are much more lively now! With those eyes, you can achieve big things!" Widening her eyes, Touka was shocked at how sharp this bubbly girl is. Touka settled herself down and sighed as the manager came in with Yuki's coffee.
"Here you go Miss Kaneki-"
"Yuki. You can call me Yuki. Thank you for the coffee! I should have some money in my bag upstairs-"
"No. It's on the house." Yuki gave a blank face and protested as Touka watched in admiration at Yuki's complexion and kindness.
"No! I can't do that! You both have done so much for me already! It's only right if I pay-"
"It's our policy to help others, so it's on the house. Plus, I'm sure you have questions." Touka took this as a signal to leave and bowed a goodbye to Yuki's gentle smile. Once taking in a few seconds of silence, Yuki went straight to the point.
"How is Ken connected to you guys? I don't remember him being close with anyone here in Anteiku." With questioning eyes that flared with a growing fire, the manager knew that this girl is special with that shimmering spark in her strong voice.
"He was also targeted by ghoul. He was wounded excessively and we helped him. We continued to stay in touch and now he works here in Anteiku." My eyes widened and I chuckled lowly to myself in surprise.
"Heh, Ken beat me to it. He got a job before me I guess... What do you know about the incident of the ghoul attack at the construction site?"
The manager's face looked confused as he raised up one of his eyebrows in questioning. "I know that two college students were attacked by a ghoul, but were miraculously saved when metal piped structures fell onto the ghoul... I believe you were in that incident?"
"Yeah. Ken and I were... I'm pretty sure he said something about that incident to you already and you have the puzzle pieces that it was me involved, but... I can't remember anything connected to that incident. I was in a coma because of all of that..."
"I'm sorry to hear that Yuki-san. You're always welcomed here at Anteiku."
"Ah! Thank you! I feel honored to be welcomed in such lovely place!"
"... Yuki...?" Whipping her head to her left, Yuki let out a small gasp and smiled warmly at the horrified Kaneki. Opening her arms wide, Kaneki ran into her arms and wept his sorrows.
"I'm awake Ken. I'm awake now..." Smoothing out his familiar black hair, she felt the tears drop off her chin as she pulled Kaneki in tighter to her embrace.
"... I t-thought you were going to leave me!" Hearing his agonizing cries and his voice full of trembling fear, Yuki patted his back in comfort and continued to hold the firm embrace.
"... I'm so sorry Ken, but I would never leave you! You're my only family left!" Pulling apart, Yuki saw the hurt and painful expression on Kaneki's face. She gently and warmly smiled and used her sleeve to wipe away Kaneki's tears.
"... I'm sorry..." Yuki felt a bullet shoot through her heart when she heard the guilty and painful voice coming from Kaneki.
"You don't have to say sorry! You're not at fault! We're siblings and better yet, twins! I'll always have your back! Okay?" Nodding his head, Kaneki felt the guilt stuck in his throat as he saw the warm and kind eyes of his lovely little sister.
After calming down, the manager brought in another cup of coffee for Kaneki. Touka was also here in the chat with them too this time.
"Thank you again manager and Touka-chan!" Touka flinched after hearing "chan" being used by Yuki's soft and melodious voice and turned away with a flustered face. "Oh! I'm sorry! Did the "chan" irritate you? I'll just call you Kirishima-"
"Touka-chan is fine..." Blinking in amusement, Yuki smiled and nodded her head.
"Oh! I almost forgot to ask! How did I end up here anyway?" Touka and Kaneki flinched very little, but Yuki saw them flcinch and the change of their mood.
"A good friend of ours found you being attacked by a ghoul. He brought you here, knowing that this is a safer place to be."
"Hmm... Did he confront the ghoul? Is he here right now? I would like to thank him."
"Unfortunately, he isn't here anymore. He left a bit after dropping you off here. He is rather quite capable of himself."
In a whistle of awe, Yuki took a sip of the ice coffee and smiled. "Wow! I just can't get over the coffee! Anteiku makes the best! Is the man that saved me that buff and strong?" Questioning in curiousity, the manager chuckled shortly and nodded his head.
"Maybe you should ask Touka that. After all, it was her uncle that saved you." With gleaming eyes, Yuki clasped her hands and looked at Touka and her uncertain expression.
"He's tall and buff for sure. He can easily punch Kaneki through a wall...."
. . .
"Pfft! Ken! You were made fun of!" Pulling one of Kaneki's cheeks, Yuki giggled teasingly and winked at Touka with a playful expression.
"I hope Ken hasn't troubled you guys too much!"
"He's an idiot..." Snorting at Touka's response, Kaneki felt the cold wind of savage remarks blow at him.
"Haha! Man up Ken! I know that you enjoy it here in Anteiku! I know I do!"
"Yeah... It's lively here." Playfully punching Kaneki's shoulder, the manager cleared his throat and spoke.
"I know it's strange to trust us this easily, but it's still late and it's too dangerous for you two to go out. We have an extra room upstairs that you both can share if you'd like."
"Really!?" The twins both exclaimed in unison. Yuki felt honored and grateful for their offer. Kaneki on the other hand was a flustered mess. He isn't used to Yuki sleeping next to him anymore. They would always sleep together when they were little kids, but now that they're adults, they had not once slept together in a long time.
"Good. Touka, would you mind fixing the room?" Nodding her head, Touka left upstairs to set up the room as Kaneki still blushed in a flustered state.
