Chapter 2: Lets Play A Game
Gideon flipped the pages of journal three, even though he didn't quite understand the novel filled with mysteries. He thought of the book's creatures as a more realistic example that's out of the ordinary than the creatures displayed in the Mystery Shack.
"Sup, Gid? Have you seen Pacifica? Isn't she suppose to be at work?" Robbie queried, sitting alongside the boy, who sat in the staircase.
"Yeah, but she had to visit her parents at their hippie van," the boy didn't want to make eye contact. He was occupied in skimming the pages of Pacifica's book.
"What cha got there, kid?"
Gideon shuts the book close, gripping it tightly and pressing the book's cover on his chest. "N-Nothing, just another random book I borrowed from uhh...dad,"
"Hmm, good thing Mr. Pines allows you to borrow one of his novels. Oh and Gideon, if you're about to die with the cause of suffering by Mr and Mrs. Pines, feel free that girlfriend's family runs a cemetery and would be giving you a coffin for your tombstone for free!"
"Robbie!"
"Heh, just sayin'." His phone rang as he snagged it out, "whoops, Wendy's calling! Hey, Gid, tell your dad that I'll be going on a date with a special someone!" Before he could leave, Gideon stopped him.
"Robbie, wait!" The boy clinged on his wrist, with a initimidated impression. "You know that my dad hates me and he'll be yelling at me furiously!"
"Fine, go tell your mom."
"My mom doesn't like me either!"
"Wow, your parents really do hate you, do they?"
"Robbie!"
"Alright, then ask Pacifica to do it."
"My parents barely talked to Pacifica! What if they'll hate hJer? I don't want my best friend getting cooped up with some utra-mega somewhat hatred!"
"Well, isn't she already cooped up with hatred? Last week, you guys have bumped into magical twins and started an army of hatred. Especially the male one, boy, you sure can't get enough of that guy."
Tapping his chin, he guessed the boy's rival. "What was his name again? Dopper? Gopper? Gompers? No, no, no. Oh yeah! Dipper!" He snapped. "Dipper Gleeful, was it?"
Gideon hissed, "I'm tired of that guy!!"
"I'll be taking that as a yes!" He sat up, gripping on the white towel that laying on his shoulder. "So, change plans, I'll be telling Bud then. Guess there was no choice." He then left, makihg his way to the kitchen to see Bud.
The door from adjacent to the staircase Gideon sat on, opened. Revealing Pacifica with a bright smile. "Whassup, Gideon?"
Gideon sighs, "nothing much, so wanna go on a mystery hunt? Wanna take my mind off things.."
"Why?" Southeast took her journal from Gideon's little hands, "what happened? Is something up?"
"Well..last night, dad yelled at me and made me clean the whole house. Mom tried to slap me on the face, right after I forgot to polish the floor immaculately. And then there's Dipper Gleeful.."
"Dipper? Aren't you his number one rival?"
"Yep and Gleeful decided to pay me a visit. Gah, that smile of his, it really makes me run for the hills,"
"Why? He hasn't done anything yet, he never had even talked to us, he knows our faces but never even faced us. Mabel was the one."
"Yeah, but I never liked that guy, his ruthless smile. It never gets old."
"Well, would ya mind telling me what happened last night?"
"He just sent me flowers from Mabel and teases me like hell,"
Pacifica giggled, "c'mon, it's not that bad," Pacifica pulled a hand to him, "but it would be pretty cool if we go on a mystery hunt for it to take your mind of things."
Gideon gladly accepted it, they left without warning to his parents nor Robbie.
On a mystical crystal ball, it showed Gideon and Pacifica going on a mystery hunt, soaring out to the forest. Mabel was giggling over her addiction towards Gideon.
Dipper Gleeful, her brother, looked up to his sister with a weird and feckly numb impression that her giggling was disturbing his natural reading of a book.
"Yep, she lost it." He murmured beneath his breath.
"My little marshmallow, going on a mystery hunt, eh?" Mabel pressed her cheek against her palm, she surged her finger at the screen of the ball, swipping her view to Pacifica. "Hmm, he's with that twerp again?"
"They're cousins, Mabel. They're always together. Just like us," Dipper agitated, reading a simple book as he leaned his back on a chair.
They were in their dressing room of the tent. "If only there was a disappearing spell, I would do it on you, brother!" Mabel snapped, her impudent impression then turned into a loving one. "And replace you with Gideon!"
"Like try and top that, idiot." Dipper buried his nose more on his book.
Mabel scooted around her chair to face her brother, "well? If you think of that, then don't you like that Pine Tree girl? You were having an interest in her since the first time we've seen her during once in the show."
"Pfft, like hell I would!"
"Eh, it is impossible for you to fall for someone. But it is possible for someone to fall for you--"
Dipper shot his eyes at his sister's, causing Mabel's eyes to unanticipatedly sting a burn, letting her cover her eyes. "Agh, I know you don't like it whenever that truly happens! But frankly, it does really occur!"
"Watch that mouth of yours, sister." His eyes were glowing bluer.
"Alright! Alright! I'll stop! Just stop burning my eyes, god, damn. Why?" The pain dissolved by the brother turning his glare away from his sister.
"So, what are you planning for those brats?"
Mabel swiveled her chair once more to face the ball once again. She stared at Pine Tree and Shooting Star. "I don't know, huh, have your demon spy on them, once caught, you know the rule."
"So what?" Dipper sighed. "Will's gonna play a game with 'em?"
Mabel shrugged, "if he does get caught." She drapped her back on the backrest of her chair, "still can't believe that you summoned the demon and the demon cries after the offer. Are you sure you didn't yell at him? Cause nobody, in front of you, has ever cried without you yelling at 'em."
"Didn't yell. Demon's just a crybaby."
She shrugs, "if you say so." She glanced at his brother from behind, "so, mind telling me how you got him out of the mindscape without warning?"
"Big trick. Ya don't need to know."
"Will," Dipper called out.
Will appeared, in his human form of what he had shifted from two days ago. "Y-Yes, M-M-Master Mas-son?" He froze, right after his adept had thrown him a knife pass him, creating a dent from the wall behind the demon as the triangle whimpered. Mabel slithered a devious smirk.
"Told ya never to call me that," Dipper snarled, despising of what he was dubbed as. One mentioning his real name really infuriates him, makes his blood boil.
"S-Sorry, M-M-Master D-Dip-p-p-per.. what did you call me f-for?"
"Simple, spy on Mabel's toy and that hippie girl." Dipper started to play with a knife, by tossing it in the air and catching it everytime it tries to fall.
"W-What if I g-get caught?" Asked the demon.
Dipper stopped playing and tossing, letting the tip of his knife land down his index finger. It didn't bleed, it stood perfectly still on the half-demon's finger.
"You won't. Just don't be careless enough to do such a thing," he then sighed. "Oh and Will.."
"Y-Yes, M-Master?"
"Try not to eliminate them..especially Pacifica, she holds more secrets from the town."
"As y-y-you wish," Cipher disappeared from the shadows after that.
Mabel rolls her eyes, "so, brother. Ever imagined what you would if I..spread out your real name to the whole town?" A knife feckly shot her, but her powers prevent it from happening. The knife was surrounded with blue-green aura caused by his sister.
She snickered as the knife in front of her that she held in her possession broke into little shards of blades, "now, now, you can do better than that.."
Thousands of knives struck around Mabel, fitting right on her outline. She spun around to face her brother, who had a floating knife off his hand. His brother looked dull over his sister. Mabel smiled sweetly as she narrowed her eyes, burning the knife into blue mists.
Mabel grinned. "Ya missed, Little Dipper,"
Dipper's eye twitched over stress, "I could kill you if I hadn't kept the promise from our parents before they died in a suicide."
"Remind me never to get on your bad side, brother."
"Why so? I'm always in my dark side," the knife from Dipper's hand disappeared in mists as the knives around his sister also dissolved in mists. This soothed Mabel a lot.
"Right.."
"Yaphee! I'm excited!" Gideon gasped out, playing around, running through trees.
Blue mists landed on a branch of a near by tree, it morphed itself and transformed to Will, in his human form. He watched the two quietly, his eyes look depressed, but what you didn't know that he was slothy and sore as his spy mode.
He sighed and said in a lazy voice, "are these really the two?"
Pacifica stopped walking, "Gideon, do you..ever feel like we're being watched?"
Will's eyes shot open, he hid behind the tree's trunk, shaking with his hair standing.
"I-I do.." Gideon also froze, aside his cousin. He clinged on her shoulder, he was shivered. "Uhh..Paz, please tell me of what to do at this situation? And whatever you'll be requiring me , please don't tell me that we have to split up."
Pacifica wasn't paying attention to his words, "Gideon, lets split up." Implied by Pacifica which sent shivers down Gideon's spine, the girl walked away from the boy.
Gideon stuttered, "P-Paz! You said it right after I told you not to!"
"So what? Scream if anything bad happens to you, I'll just be right in the corner.." Pacifica said, not making eye contact.
"But Paz!!"
She sighed in despair, "don't be such a crybaby, Gid."
"Pacifica!" And then, she was nowhere at sight.
Pacifica sighed in disappointment, "oh, Gideon.."
"Pacifica Southeast, fancy seeing you around here.." a eerie voice spoke up.
Pacifica literally blown up in defense mode, looking around her surroundings. "Who're you? Show yourself!"
"Could you be quiet enough for your best friend not to hear? It is so annoying seeing you yell at me.." Dipper Gleeful came out of the shadows, he looked somber.
"D-Dipper Gleeful? What are you doing here?" Asked Pacifica.
Dipper sighed, "none of your business."
Pacifica got confused and quirked an eyebrow. Gideon was shivering as he walked forward. Will was shrudding in hell, he rubbed his hands. "U-Umm, H-Hello?" Gideon glanced behind the tree of where Will was hiding.
Their eyes met and they screamed. "G-g-gahh!!!!"
Dipper blinked and sighed in disappointment, "damn, demon..never gets the job done," he muttered.
"What was that?"
He glanced at Pacifica, frowning a bit. "Nothing, see you in town, Pine Tree.." he left, without saying another word.
Pacifica realizes that one of the screams belonged to Gideon, "oh gosh! Gideon!" She ran away, going to where the scream was near. She bumped on Will, screaming also. Gideon ran towards her and hid behind her.
"What are you?!" She fiercely snapped at Will, who was crossing his arms uncomfortably, being called as an"it". "What do you want from us, Monster?!"
Will blinked, "a-are kids t-this v-viol-lent these d-days?"
"Why on Earth do you even stutter?" Asked Pacifica.
Will closed his eyes shut and sighed very melancholy. "Guess I have no choice, then."
"Huh? N-No choice?" Pacifica quirked her head to the right. "The heck, what in the world are you talking about?"
Will snapped his fingers while the whole world turned monochrome, they were hurriedly sucked inside the Mindscape. "W-Welcome to t-the Mindscape, where y-you are nothing, but a n-nasty s-soul..." proclaimed by Will, he surged his wrist pass the trees and bushes while everything transformed into a somewhat library.
Will sat on a table, "come, s-sit down." He gestured and they did so, they sat across Will. In front of Pacifica, Gideon was a neon-blue ball with numbers and letters encircling it.
"S-Shall we p-play a game?"
"G-Game?" Pacifica stuttered, "whoa, whoa. Hold on. Nothing says about a game,"
"A-Allow me t-to i-introduce myself. M-My name is Wilson C-Cipher, call me W-Will for s-short." Will gestured to himself, "I-I am a D-Dream demon, I believe you met my masters before?"
"Masters?" Gideon blinked.
Pacifica then gasped out, "Dipper! You're the slave of the Gleefuls! Ugh, I should've known!"
Will sighs, "p-please d-d-don't be m-mad. I-I'm just doing my job and the deal," he perked his head down pensively, he then somberly stated. "My masters didn't really want me to play a game with you.." he bitted his bottom lip and explainsd. "For this game, we'll be playing..Materialization, t-the rules are simple." The globe infront of them flashed glowing blue, it showed holographic shapes. A sentence appeared right after Will says. "Use a word that already b-been used, you lose. F-Fail to answer for 30 seconds, y-you lose. I-If you cannot continue, you lose. Use a f-fictional word that doesn't exist, it won't count nor be materiallized. I-If you say something that's here. I-it will disappear.. say something that's not here, it will a-appear."
"You know what that means..o-of course everything that happened will be undone once the game is over. S-So don't show-off your k-knowledge."
"Got it."
"We dubbed an o-object's name a-and..uhh..I-It'll come to life, i-it's just a illusion. It is not t-true.." he depicted somberly. "If y-you lose..I-I take your existence.."
"What?!" Pacifica gasped out, it made Will flinch. "You've pulled us into this somewhat colorless world of yours! And now, you're saying that you'll be removing us out of existence?!"
"T-There's nothing I can do..I-It is a rule."
Gideon placed a hand on Pacifica's shoulder, "Paz..don't be mean to a poor sad demon.."
Pacifica sighed, "continue..what happens if we win? What'll happen then?"
"I-I'll let you go.."
The girl quirked an eyebrow, "come again? You'll..just let us go?" She folded her arms in a annoyed tone, "Mr. Cipher, you do realize that to humans, a human's existence costs so much?"
Will sighed, "v-very well..n-name anything you w-want if you win.." Pacifica just nodded with it, "n-now, you may choose o-of w-w-who's going to b-be the player."
The two exchanged glances, "both of us,"
"W-What?"
"I said, it's both of us." Pacifica repeated blankly, "Gideon and I have been together for so long that I never wanted to be apart. In one game, the player who chose to combat..is both of us."
Will muttered, looking at the corner of his eye, "well..the rules doesn't quite say anything wrong about that.." he glanced back at them, "b-but I s-s-s-suppose we could m-make a d-deal. T-Two of you as o-one p-player and I for one.. d-don't cheat, sh-shake my hand and w-we'll seal up th-the p-pledge.." he brought out a hand and lit it with flames.
The two exchanged glances once more, not knowing who'll be shaking the demon's hand. But Pacifica just reached out her hand and shook his hand, the flames painlessly engulfed the girl's hand. Once Will released, the flames replenished, vanishing into thin air.
"For example, of how to p-play.." Will thought of a word, he doesn't need to keep his eyes on the word globe cause he already knows and can predict. "Tallow." All the candles in the room disappeared. "Wall." The walls also disappeared. "The first word's end letter has to have the same letter of the first letter of the next word. If not, the i-illusion will not happen.."
"May w-we begin.." announced Will. "I-I 'll go first. I'll be picking any word I'll chose, but only one." He ran his eyes on the globe with encircling words over it. "Whale." A living whale dropped from out of no where, plummeting down and crashing on the table. Pacifica and Gideon jumped while Will doesn't, he remained still and focused.
"Whoa! Are you crazy?! It is a living sea creature!" Pacifica gasped out.
"Living creature or not, i-it is still part of the game." Will emended melancholy, "you'll probably know this game cause it is similar to t-the game.. 'Word Chain', but this is called Materialization unit, it is a g-game that most demons play."
"W-Wait! Is that...whale going to stay till the end of the game?" Pacifica quivered in affright.
"Nope. I-It'll wear off in five..four..three..two..one!" Will snapped his fingers and the whale's gone.
"Still..I don't get this game.." Gideon says. "How do you even win?"
Will blinked, "the rules..didn't you get me?"
Gideon contemplated about it, consuming a flash back wedging in his mind and then got it. "Oh, no need, I remember now!" Will quirked an eyebrow in confusion with this arteficial life form.
"Y-Your turn."
"Pacifica! You first!" Gideon demanded.
Pacifica sighed sheepishly, hesistant of what words to pick that starts with the letter E from the end word of Whale. She stared at the word globe with a reluctant intent. "Uhh..uhm.." she then saw a word that made her feel mischief and acerbic. She grinned and bluntly proclaimed, "explosive bomb!"
A gigantic bomb suddenly appeared above then, it then activated. Will's eyes got shocken, instead of crying. The bomb activated and began to explode.
Will pounced away from the table, floating in the air. Boom! The bomb exploded.
