Chapter 8
Gideon
I tiredly trudged down the stairs, rubbing my sleepy eyes. Downstairs, Pacifica was busy making her specialty.
"Hey, cuz! Want some Pacifica juice?" She asked, and I wrinkled my nose at the smell of her strange concoction, a red juice with plastic dinosaurs, ice cubes, and toy cars.
"No thanks." I said, sitting down.
"More for me and Grunkle Stan, then!" Pacifica said, and started pouring some in his coffee. He didn't look pleased when he looked up from his newspaper.
"Um...thanks, Pacifica." He said, and returned to his newspaper.
As I poured myself a bowl of cereal, I heard the doorbell ring. Pacifica shot up.
"I'll get it!" She yelled, and she raced into the hallway, slipping a few times but managing to make it to the door.
"Gideon, it's for youuuuuuu!!" Pacifica screamed, and she ran back into the kitchen. I think she's had enough Pacifica juice for today.
I walked into the hall and to the door, where Mabel Pines was standing outside.
"Good morning, Gideon." She said.
"Hey, Mabel. Want to come in?" I asked, standing aside.
"Only for a few minutes. I have to go to rehearse soon." She said, and came inside. "So, last night was really fun."
"Yeah, all that ice cream was pretty delicious." I said.
"So I was wondering if... you want to go on a date?" Mabel looked down at the ground as her cheeks grew red.
"A...a date?" I asked. "A play date?"
"No."
"A shopping date?"
"No, just a date."
I gulped. "Oh, um, wow. This is kinda...sudden."
"Yeah. So..." Mabel looked up and smiled. "Yes or no?"
I could tell how much confidence it took for her to ask me out. I didn't want her to start crying and run away.
Maybe just one date. I thought. "S...sure." I said. "Yeah, sounds great."
"Really?" She squealed with joy. "Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" She jumped up and down and clapped her hands, then gave me a quick hug. She pulled away.
"So, how about tonight at that ocean-themed restaurant?" Mabel asked. "At 9?"
"S...sure!" I smiled, and Mabel smiled. "Great! See you there! Bye!"
She skipped down the gravel driveway and out of the sight. I felt my stomach turn queasy. I didn't like her in that way. Only as a friend. That was simply all.
I closed the door to the porch and went back into the kitchen.
"Are you okay?" Pacifica asked, as Grunkle Stan exited to get ready for the first day's tour.
"Yeah, it's just that..." I turned around from the milk I was pouring into my cereal. "I'm going on a date with Mabel tonight!"
Pacifica gasped, then squealed. "Oh my gosh! I didn't know you liked her!"
"I don't." I said. "I have no idea why I said yes. It's just this one date. She looked so nervous so I decided maybe just this time?"
Pacifica's smile faded. "Gideon, girls don't work that way! If you say yes to a date, they think that you like them. There's no such thing as one time! You have to tell her how you feel tonight."
"Yeah, I guess." I nodded. "She just looked so happy. If I didn't say yes, she probably would have cried."
"Don't worry, just be nice about it. I'm sure you'll be fine. She'd eventually find out you don't like her, and her heart would be even more broken. It's better now."
"You're right." I agreed. "Tonight is the only date. We can still be friends, right?"
Mabel
I walked to Dipper, who was leaned against a tree while he was waiting for me.
"You seem happy. Did he say yes?" Dipper asked.
"Yes!" I said excitedly. "All I had to do was act nervous and he took immediate pity on me! If you're able to ask out Pacifica, that journal might as well be ours."
"Good. Now, let's go practice for tomorrow's show."
Gideon
"And there you go." Pacifica tied my tie, around my white polo and pants. "That should be fancy enough."
"Thanks." I said, looking at myself in the mirror. "How am I going to tell her about how I feel?"
"Don't worry!" Pacifica said. "Just give this a try and if you don't like it, just tell her at the end of the date you just think you should be friends."
"Okay." I took a deep breath. "Thanks for helping me with the tie."
"No problem." She grinned. "Good luck!"
"Thanks." I said, and walked out the door.
I arrived at the restaurant 5 minutes early. Mabel was already seated, so I went to go sit with her.
"Hello, Gideon." She smiled.
"Hi, Mabel." I said. "Wow, this is really fancy."
"Yeah! We don't even have these many forks at my parent's dinner parties." Mabel giggled.
A waiter came over.
"Hello, Mabel." He said. "Would you like the usual?"
"Yes, Jean-Luc." She nodded. "What about you, Gideon?"
I looked down at the menu in front of me. "Oh, um...lobster, please."
"Yes, your order will be right with you." Jean-Luc said, and took the menus. He walked away, and me and Mabel casually chatted for a little bit. It went well until she start flirting with me, batting her eyelashes and scooting closer and closer in the booth.
Later, our food arrived. Mabel was happily eating hers, but I couldn't really get over the fact the lobster was still alive.
"Isn't the food great here?" Mabel asked.
"Yeah." I nodded. "It's just that the lobster is a little....undercooked."
"Let me help you with that." Mabel picked up a knife and chucked it at the lobster. With a crack, it buried itself into the lobster's shiny red head and it stopped squirming.
"Oh...thanks." I smiled, picking up my fork and lightly poking the lobster, which suddenly jerked its claws against the plate and fell still again.
"So, I was wondering if you want to go on another date after this? Maybe tomorrow perhaps?" Mabel asked.
"I...I don't know. We're not really dating so it might be weird..."
"That reminds me!" Mabel smiled. She whistled, and a parrot flew inside.
"Will. You. Be my. Boyfriend?" The parrot recited. "Pickles. I want pickles. SQWAUK!"
I gulped, as everyone in the restaurant crowded around.
"Aww, that's so adorable!"
"Young love is so cute!"
"They'd make an adorable couple!"
"If he doesn't say yes, I'll die!"
"I can verify that will indeed happen."
I felt pressured, like the crowd was coming closer and closer to me. I couldn't say no. Everybody might hate me!
"Ummm...okay?"
