Chapter 16

Gideon

"Hey, Pacifica, can you reach that for me?"
"I can reach it." I offered.
"Nah, Pacifica is taller."
"We're the same height!" I said. Pacifica stood up from reading Journal 3 and grabbed a meter stick that was leaning against the counter, and I . "Let's check!"
Wendy took the meter stick and we stood back to back as she measured us.
"Yeah, Pacifica is taller by one millimeter."
"That only makes he left taller than me in Canada!" I said.
"Hah, I'm taller than you!" Pacifica laughed. "Yes!"
"Hey, what are we laughing at?" Grunkle Stan asked, walking in.
"I'm taller than Gideon!" Pacifica said.
"In Canada!"
"Don't get short with your cousin." Grunkle Stan laughed.
"Maybe you guys should calm down with the joking a little bit."
"Hah, good one Wendy!" Grunkle Stan laughed. "Little!"
The doorbell rang, and Grunkle Stan walked away to go answer it.
"AAGGHH!! The tax collector!" I heard the door slam and Grunkle Stan came running in with a bag of money. "Where's the trap door?!"
"Stan Pines, you are the lucky winner of the Random Winner contest! You win one million dollars!" Somebody shouted it from the door. We all ran there to see a camera filming us and a man holding a large check and a contract.
"Just sign here!" He held out the contract and a pen, which Grunkle Stan eagerly took and signed.
"Hah! You fell for it!" Mabel stepped out from behind the large check, and grabbed the signed contract. "This house belongs to... what??!"
She held out the contract and I saw Stan had written "Suck a lemon, little girl."
She ripped the paper in frustration. "I'll get this dirty old shack someday! You better watch out!"
She walked away, along with the other people who had been standing there.
"Why does she even want this place?" Pacifica asked.
"Beats me." Grunkle Stan shrugged. "She's always trying to get it. Now, who wants to continue with the short jokes?"
"Gideon probably already forgot because he has a ... SHORT TERM MEMORY!"
Pacifica and Grunkle Stan laughed, and I crossed my arms and walked back into the Gift Shop, where I picked up the journal Pacifica had been reading, and I flipped through it.
"There has to be a way to make myself taller." I mumbled, paging through it, until I landed on a certain page. "Hmm, 'Legends of miniature buffalo and giant squirrels have led me to believe there are height altering properties deep with in the forest.'"
I looked at the map on one of the pages where most of the weirdly-sized animals had been found, and in the cluster of dots it looked like that was the area I would find what I needed.
I set off.

Later, I couldn't find whatever it was and I had been looking for hours. I flipped through the pages of the journal.
"Now, where is this?" I wondered out loud. "Maybe this way... or over there..."
I suddenly stumbled over a tree root, sending me rolling down a hill as I clutched the journal to my chest.
I stopped in a small clearing, filled with beautiful crystals that reflected beautiful, purple light. A deer ran through one and shrank into the leaves.
"This must be the place." I snapped a small crystal off of a cluster and put it in my pocket. "Hopefully this should work."

Later, I tied the crystal to a flashlight and pointed it at a chess piece. I flicked on the flashlight and it became smaller in the pink-ish light.
"Smaller..." I turned around the frystal and turned on the flashlight again. "Bigger."
The chess piece grew up to the roof and broke through it. "Big! Too big!"

Pacifica

"Where did that journal go?" I looked through the sales items box. "Don't tell me somebody bought it!"
"Hey, notice anything different?" Gideon walked into the gift shop.
"No, why?" I asked. He took the meter stick and held it against him.
"I'm another millimeter taller!" He said.
"What?!" How could he have grown that fast? "That doesn't matter. I grew faster, so I'll end up being taller than you."
"Yeah? Well, I think I feel another growth spurt coming on right now." He walked out. I shrugged and was about to start looking again, when I remembered I forgot to ask Gideon if he had taken the journal.
"Gideon, wait!" I ran upstairs to our room and opened the door to see Gideon looking... like he grew more than a millimeter. I gasped.
"What happened?" I demanded. "Is there an invisible wizard or something?"
"No." Gideon said.
"So if I look in the closet, there won't be some invisible wizard?" I asked.
"No! I grew myself with this!" He held up a flashlight with a crystal tied to it.
I snatched the flashlight from him.
"So, how does this work?" I turned on the flashlight and aimed it at his hand. By accident, it grew larger. "And if I flip the crystal.."
"Stop!" Gideon leaped forward as I shrank his hand back to the right size. He tried to grab it, but I pushed him down and ran out of the room.
"Give me the journal and I'll give it to you!" I called behind me, as Gideon ran after me.
"No, it's my journal! I was the one who found it!" He said. I ran down the stairs and outside, where Gideon attacked me, sending us off the porch and the flashlight rolling at somebody's feet. We got up, and saw Mabel Pines examining the flashlight.
"Maybe she doesn't know it's a magical flashlight that can grow and shrink people." Gideon said.
"Magic flashlight that can grow and shrink, huh? You should speak quieter." Mabel aimed the flashlight at both of us.
"No!" We screamed. A beam of pink light shone out as she pressed the button. "Stop!"
We started to shrink, and then, she picked both of us up and grabbed an empty jar that was lying around on the grass and stuffed us in it.
"You're mine now!" She laughed.
