Chapter 11
Pacifica
"What were you doing out here?" I asked.
"Well, Mabel was late to rehearsal again. She said she had a quick errand, but it took longer than five minutes. This is usually where she brings her victims." Dipper says.
"Wait...so she's killed people?!" I demanded. "And you're fine with that?"
"Honestly, I'd prefer if she didn't, but she does what has to be done to keep our secrets." He shrugged casually. "I'm surprised she chose to try to kill you, why?"
"Well," I looked down at the log me and Dipper were sitting on. "She thinks I'm the reason her and Gideon broke up."
"She never took rejection easily."
After sitting in a silence for a few moments as the stars started to emerge out of the orange sky, I asked, "Why did you save me?"
Dipper looked down from the sky and into my eyes. "You simply aren't worth killing. There's something different about you than other girls."
His hand, which was resting on the log, slightly moved enough so it was touching my hand.
"What makes me so different?" I asked, looking back up at the sky. Maybe if I didn't look at him, I wouldn't blush, but I could still feel my cheeks glow red and feel warm.
"I'm not sure yet." He said. "But you definitely are different."
Suddenly, he put his hand on top of mine. I looked over at him, and he was smiling. I couldn't keep myself from blushing.
Stop blushing, Pacifica. That doesn't mean he likes you, right? Just because your hands are touching... I tried to look away from him, but he had such a nice smile. His blue eyes were twinkling. His birthmark in the shape of the Little Dipper on his forehead seemed to only add to the adorableness.
I stood up from the log. "I should go find Gideon. He's probably really worried."
"Are you sure?" Dipper asked, sounding like he was trying to hide disappointment.
"Yeah." I nodded. "It's been nice talking to you, Dipper."
"The pleasure was mine." He also stood up. "Do you want me to walk you home? If you're tired or hurt I can use my amulet to levitate you."
I shook my head. "No thanks. I'll see you around, I guess."
"Goodnight, Pacifica." He waved, and we both went our separate ways into the forest.
Gideon
I stood at the front door of the Mystery Shack, sucking in my tears. I didn't know how to tell Grunkle Stan.
Pacifica is dead. My cousin, one of the people I was most closest to.
And how was I going to explain this? Her being killed by one of the most beloved people in the town, Mabel Pines? I couldn't say that she jumped. Pacifica isn't the type, and it would be playing in Mabel's favor.
"Just get it over with, Gideon." I whispered, and pushed open the door to the Gift Shop. It slowly creaked open, and the small bell rang. Grunkle Stan was at the register, setting out new merchandise.
"Hey, kid. You were out late." He said. "Is by any chance Pacifica with you? I think she said she wanted to help cook tonight."
"Yeah, about that..." I rubbed my arm, and looked down at the yellow triangle rug. "She isn't coming back because....umm..."
"Come on, spit it out, kid." Grunkle Stan said, adjusting his fez.
I took a deep breath. "Pacifica is-"
The sound of the door opening behind me interrupted me, and I hear the little bell ring again. I turn around to see Pacifica standing in the doorway, looking tired.
"Hey, guys. I'm not cooking tonight, but I will tomorrow. I'm not in the right mood." She said, dragging herself across the floor as leaves fell out of her hair.
"Pacifica! You're alive!" I said, jumping to hug her. When I pulled away, she smiled slightly. "But how?"
"Grappling hook?" She held up the grappling hook gun she had, and shrugged.
"I thought you were dead!" Tears came flooding out of my eyes.
"Don't worry, she didn't kill me." Pacifica reassured me. "I'm okay."
I nodded, and sniffled, trying to get the tears to stop coming.
"Let's go watch some of that junky public access TV. And since I'm not cooking, pizza is on me."
We both walked out of the gift shop and into the living room.
Mabel
When Dipper came back to the mansion, I was a wreck, blowing my nose every two minutes and trying not to let any tears spill into in my bowl of ice cream.
"Are you alright, sister?" Dipper asked, as he walked in.
"No! I'm obviously not!" I turned to look at him with my red, swollen eyes. "I killed Pacifica!"
"You killed many people beforehand, why is this time no different?"
"Because...Gideon hates me now and....he broke my amulet!" I started to cry again.
"He broke your amulet?" Dipper demanded.
I nodded, taking deep breaths. "He hates me!"
"I'm sure we can find you another amulet." Dipper pulled his Journal 2 out of a bookcase and flipped through it, then showed me a page. "See, there was more than ours hidden. We just have to work a little harder to find these ones. I can get Will right on it."
"I don't want the amulet!" I cried. "I want Gideon! But now he hates me forever because I killed his cousin and...and..." I started to hyperventilate.
"You may still have a chance with him." Dipper said, closing his journal.
"No I don't!" I wailed, and blew my nose into another tissue. "I-I-i killed h-his c-cousin!"
"No, you didn't. Pacifica is still alive and well." Dipper said.
"B-but how?" My face darkened. "Don't tell me you..."
"Of course not!" Dipper said. "I used my amulet to levitate her as she was falling, that's all. Don't immediately assume I-"
"Don't worry, brother." I sniffed. "I know you would never. Right?"
I looked over at him as he stood by the dark fireplace. He snapped his fingers, igniting a blue flame inside of it.
"No, never."
"Not even for her?"
"No, I just met her. I'd never use it on her."
Lies. I knew they were lies.
"So, would you do that to Gideon if you had to?"
"Of course not." I said, trying to use my spoon to get another scoop out of the tub of ice cream.
If he was going to lie, I was going to lie too.
