The Hand that Rocks the Pines: Part Five
Two important things happened on the night of the Silver Ball:
1. The Gleeful brothers met in one of the Tent of Telepathy's many breakrooms, and
2. There was a mission to be done in the Mystery Shack.
Will Cipher popped into existance - right outside the Shack. His deadline to find out what exactly the Southeasts' secret was ended tonight at midnight. Only five more hours.
He snapped his fingers, and he instantly become nothing but his shadow. With this ability, he was able to slip inside the shack unnoticed.
Laughter came from the gift shop. Curious, Will floated into the shop and observed the scene from the rafters.
He nearly gasped when he saw who had been laughing.
Mentally reviewing the Wheel in his head, he pointed out the people with invisible hands one by one. Blondie with a ponytail . . . Llama. Green Plaid Shirt Guy . . . Stitched Heart. Question-mark shirt woman . . . Question Mark.
Were all members of his Wheel in Gravity Falls?
He certainly hoped not . . .
Question Mark glanced at the cover of the magazine she had been reading. "You guys know anything about Gideon and Mabel dating?"
Will threw his hands up in the air. Splendid - so now Pentagram was here, too?
"Better not let Mr. Gleeful see that," Stitched Heart warned.
Will had turned around to leave and continue his mission, but the name "Mr. Gleeful" stopped him. What was Stan Gleeful doing here? He whirled around, unable to believe his nonexistant ears.
Llama snatched the magazine from Question Mark's hands. "He probably knows already," she said, observing the magazine cover. "I wonder what the name for the new couple will be . . ."
"Mabeon?" Question Mark suggested.
"Gideable!" Stitched Heart suggested, a grin spreading across his face.
"No no, wait, I got it!" Llama cried, putting her hands in the air. "How about . . . Magidbeleon!"
The three burst into fits of laughter at that. Will narrowed his eye and turned around once more.
"Oh," Question Mark began, once they had calmed down, "Mr. Gleeful is visiting the Tent of Telepathy. Something about Gideon and his project."
Will was left still confused in midair. Mr. Gleeful was already at the Tent of Telepathy with Pine Tree and Shooting Star -
Once again, he froze.
He couldn't be here. Not him.
To test his theory, Will zoomed all over the house. Nothing. And he was positive there was at least something hidden in the Mystery Shack, but that stupid Gleeful had demon-proofed his entire fake museum.
Will muttered something under his breath that was in no way pleasant. Pine Tree's deal with him was that if he couldn't find anything in the Shack, he had to work for the Gleefuls.
An idea sparked in Will's mind.
Maybe . . . there was a way. A way to stop the members of his Wheel from entering Gravity Falls all at once.
He needed a bit more time. And an . . . assistant, someone who was close with the Southeasts. Or possibly Pentagram.
Without another thought, Will left the Mystery Shack, and he failed his mission on purpose.
While Will spied on Melody, Robbie, and Pacifica in the gift shop, Ford was seated in a breakroom in the Tent of Telepathy.
Across from his brother.
Half an hour earlier, Ford had been reading the newspaper in the Shack's living room. It had been a relatively quiet day in the business area, and he was looking forward to a nice and peaceful evening as well . . .
. . . until he saw the front page of the newspaper.
It took Ford approximately ten minutes to tell Melody where he was going, grab his newspaper, and nearly throw himself into his car. As fast as he could (under the speed limit, of course), he zoomed into town and headed to the Tent of Telepathy.
It was a Thursday, which meant there was no Mystery Twins show. Perfect timing for Ford to have a conversation with his dear brother.
Once he got out of his car, he headed to the backstage of the Tent.
A security guard stopped him. "Business?" the guard asked in a deep voice.
"I'm the owner of the Mystery Shack and I'd like to speak with your manager," Ford ordered.
The guard moved out of the way, and Ford continued down the backstage hall. He stopped at a closed breakroom door and knocked on it rather urgently.
"Who is it?" a muffled voice grunted from the room.
Ford resisted the strong urge to kick the door down right then and there. "It's your brother, open up."
The newspaper was slammed onto the table in between the two. "What," Ford demanded, "is this?"
Stan glanced at the front page article; Mabel Gleeful's new boyfriend? it read.
"So she's not allowed to date now?" Stan snorted. "Overprotective much."
"No, she's dating Preston and Priscilla's nephew," Ford said. "I thought I told you to keep the Southeasts out of your shows."
"He's not a Southeast, Sixer. He's a Pines."
Ford groaned, dragging a hand over his face. "You know what I mean," he snapped. "Break them up. And don't call me that."
"They're not your family," Stan argued. "Me and the twins are!"
"It certainly feels like they're my family," Ford retorted, "especially since you've turned our niece and nephew into power-hungry thieves!"
Stan rolled his eyes. "Please, they chose to take the amulets." After a moment, he added, "You can just view this as a business opportunity!"
Ford's angry expression turned into one of confusion. "Business? Stanley, what . . .?"
"Exactly what I mean. If these two keep dating, we could merge our businesses into one! Just think -" Stan was suddenly next to Ford, an arm around his brother's shoulders and waving a hand in the air dramatically. "The Tent of Mystery!"
Ford frowned. "No, Stanley."
"We've been enemies for far too long. Just think if they married! We could be joined businesses for life!"
"Stanley. They're thirteen."
"Doesn't mean we can't plan for the future!" Stan rubbed his hands together. "So what do you say, Fordsie?"
Ford stared at his brother for a long time.
At last, he stood up and, before leaving the breakroom, he said shortly, "I already told you my answer."
When Gideon arrived home that night from his Silver Ball date, he collapsed into a chair in the living room, put his forehead on the table, and let out an obnoxious groan.
Pacifica poked her head into the living room. "How'd it go?" she asked, joining her cousin.
"Wonderful," Gideon moaned, his head still on the table. "She made everything perfect."
"Can't you just break up with her?"
Gideon lifted his head to stare at his cousin. "No!" he exploded. "She'd become insane if I did that!"
At that moment, Ford trudged into the living room, having just gotten home, and sat near Gideon at the table. "Do what?" he asked.
"I don't want to date Mabel," Gideon explained, resting his chin on his arm. "But there's no way she'll want to stop our relationship."
"I'll do it for you!" Pacifica said brightly.
There was a moment of silence as Gideon stared at her again.
"You're obviously miserable, and you should love whoever you're in a relationship with." Pacifica snapped her fingers. "When's your next date?"
"Next Thursday."
"I'll do it then," Pacifica said. "It's just a break-up. It's not like she has magic powers and can get revenge on me in the most dramatic way possible." She snorted at the last part.
Instead of agreeing, Ford averted his eyes from Pacifica. Gideon just glanced across the table, dread sinking into his heart.
"Right?" Pacifica repeated.
"I'm sure it's fake," Gideon said, forcing a smile on his face.
Ford sighed deeply, facing the cousins. "I hate to break it to you, but . . . I'm sorry."
Gideon's heart sank as he shared a glance with Pacifica.
"Their powers are very much real."
Even though he had already known, hearing the confirmation from Ford still surprised Gideon.
"But - their shows," Pacifica said, shocked. "Everything Gideon pointed out - and even what Mabel showed him -"
"- it's not fake," Ford finished. "The twins use simple tricks in their shows to make it seem like it was fake."
"So every time they ask someone to stand up or say a number - it's mind control," Gideon figured out.
"He actually read my mind." Pacifica stared at the floor in utter astonishment. "He knew I was thinking of negative eight."
"He didn't even try to hide his magic," Gideon muttered. He threw his hands in the air, exasperated. "What a day. First my 'girlfriend' goes all out to proclaim her love for me, and then she and her brother have magic powers. Wonderful."
"We'll uncover their secret," Pacifica assured, her eyes now shining. "Don't worry, Gideon. We won't let them ruin our summer, or your name with Mabel isn't 'Magidbeleon'!"
Ford looked mildly amused as Gideon made a puzzled face, saying, "What?"
"Nothing." Pacifica snorted and tried to hide her laughter. "C'mon, Gid, let's go do something to take your mind off of Mabel and her schemes."
