The Hand that Rocks the Pine: Part Seven
The Southeasts held a family meeting before dinner and after tours had ended for the day. The meeting, of course, included Melody and Ford.
"Okay," Mr. Southeast began, once everyone had found somewhere to sit. "Gideon. What happened?"
"No, it was my fault," Pacifica cut in before Gideon could speak. "I asked to visit the Tent of Telepathy . . . I made Ford take us."
"I don't blame you," Melody remarked. "You've been trapped in this house or on vacation every summer."
"But I didn't tell her it was a bad idea," Gideon added, throwing himself under the blame. "If I had refused, you could've lost of business, though -"
Mrs. Southeast smiled. "At least you weren't only thinking of yourself." Then she turned to her daughter and asked, "Pacifica, I want to know what happened in the gift shop today."
Oh boy.
"Um." Pacifica started playing with strands of her ponytail. "I broke up Mabel and Gideon because Gideon didn't want to, and then she came here and she fought me with -"
Ford shot Pacifica a sharp look.
Pacifica changed her answer at top speed. "- with, um, nothing! We just argued, and then her brother showed up and brought her home." And made her pass out, she mentally added.
Mr. Southeast frowned. "Mabel? She's a part of the Mystery Twins?"
The cousins nodded.
"I visited their manager and asked not to involve any of you in anything," Ford added, "but that didn't work."
"Well," Mrs. Southeast said, "I think we all learned to not keep you inside the house all summer."
"Finally," Pacifica groaned. Everyone laughed at that statement.
"Meeting adjourned!" Mr. Southeast called, chuckling.
Mrs. Southeast and Melody headed into the kitchen to start on dinner. Mr. Southeast grabbed the latest newspaper and started reading it. The cousins made to go to their rooms, but Ford stopped them.
"Come with me," he said.
The cousins exchanged a look. Had they done anything remotely forbidden lately . . .?
Once they were in the gift shop, Ford pulled something out of the jacket he always wore and put it into Pacifica's hands.
Pacifica looked at her hands. Her heart skipped a beat.
The third journal.
"I think you two need this after these couple of weeks," Ford said. "I've already copied down everything I wanted."
"We can get it back?" Pacifica's face lit up. "For real?"
"Well, for now," Ford corrected. "I still have the right to ask for it back, of course."
Pacifica nodded. "Thanks, Ford!" she called, running off with Gideon.
It wasn't long before they had locked themselves in Pacifica's part of the room. They immediately sat down and started to read the journal.
"What do you think we'll see next?" Pacifica mused, turning the pages.
Gideon snickered and pointed to a drawing of a carpet. "How about a nice and harmless carpet?"
Pacifica laughed. "Experiment 072? How dangerous could a carpet be?"
"A squash with a human face and emotions? I'm starting to wonder if anything in here is real."
"Well, we just have to find out," Pacifica said brightly. "But I don't think I want to spend a whole day looking for a squash -"
The cousins glanced at each other.
Then they collapsed into fits of giggles, laughing until their sides hurt. Of all the creatures that hid in Gravity Falls, a simple half-human squash wasn't what either of them expected. At all.
They were unaware of the fact that the llama on Pacifica's jacket and the five-sided star on Gideon's hat began to glow a very faint light.
The mug from the Mystery Shack's gift shop smashed into a million pieces against the wall.
"She LIED!" Mabel shrieked.
She breathed heavily, staring at her smashed mug on the floor. Her hands clenched and unclenched into fists as she sat on her bed.
Dipper leaned against the wall directly across from Mabel. His arms were folded as he waited patiently for his sister to be done with her tantrum.
"Done yet?" he asked, sounding bored.
Mabel grabbed her pillow and threw it as hard as she could at her brother, who caught the pillow with his magic.
"Give me my amulet back," she demanded, her voice dangerously low.
"I saw the way you were using it. That's now how the journal says we -"
"Journal, journal, journal - ALL you talk about is that STUPID journal!" Mabel yelled. "Ever since you found it who knows where, you literally worship the thing. 'Oh, we should go to the journal! This guy knew about our powers, what does the journal say?' You're obsessed!"
She pointed at him. "You stay up all night reading the thing, and then in the morning you end up looking like a vampire! And not the hot kind!"
"Yeesh, okay, I get it." Dipper didn't move from his spot, still leaning against the wall. "I'm obsessed. Sure."
Dipper was infuriating. He rarely showed emotion unless he was angry at something or someone - something Mabel wished he would just stop from time to time.
And then there was that Southeast brat -
"And where is that demon?!" she exclaimed, realizing something else. "He's overdue on his mission!"
Dipper snapped his fingers. Within minutes, Will Cipher appeared, right next to the boy.
"Will, I believe your mission for us is overdue," Dipper stated. "What did you find?"
"Sorry, Pine Tree," Will said calmly, starting to twirl his cane in his hand. "You're out of luck. I couldn't find anything."
"WHAT?!"
Mabel was soon dangerously close to Will's giant eye as she now towered over the blue triangle.
"You're telling me you couldn't find ANYTHING in that measly, fake, suspicious museum?" Mabel growled.
"Nope."
Mabel could detect the tiniest bit of fear in Will's voice. Good.
"Well, you work for us now," Dipper said. "You better have another plan."
"I - I do!" Will put his hands out to stop the twins from overreacting. "I just need more time! To, um -" He regained his chipper and confident demeanor once again. "To form and shape the plan to make it perfect! Trust me, Pine Tree, Shooting Star - you won't be disappointed!"
He tried to sound convincing, but the twins raised an eyebrow, looking skeptical.
"Fine," Dipper sighed. "Continue with your plan. But whenever we snap our fingers, you come to us. No delays."
"Suit yourself, Pine Tree." Will half-shrugged as best he could. "I could very well be an inch away from my plan and you could destroy it with a snap of your fingers."
Dipper frowned. Mabel narrowed her eyes.
Will stood his ground and stared the twins right back.
Finally, Dipper broke the silence. "We'll be aware of that fact," he said.
"Great!" Will tipped his hat towards the twins. "See you two around!"
And with a pop, he disappeared.
Mabel clenched her fists again. "I'm going to get back at that little blond Barbie."
"For the last time, she wasn't lying -" Dipper dragged a hand over his face.
"Of course she was," Mabel retorted. "Then why didn't he just break up with me instead of having the Southeast brat do it for him?"
"He probably didn't want to face your fury."
Mabel glared at Dipper, who just chuckled at his own joke.
"I'll get revenge on Pacifica," Mabel swore.
With that, she stormed over to her desk, where a collection of things lay. She picked up a photograph of the cousins, stared at it for a while, and then ripped it in half. The half with Gideon was saved and placed in a drawer of her desk, but the other half of the photo, the half with Pacifica, was ripped into a million pieces and thrown into the garbage.
