Inconvenience Store: Part Four

Gideon had been scared out of his mind from the haunting, even starting to hyperventalite - and what did that Gleeful boy say?

"Well, duh."

That's what he said. He had the nerve to act like a haunting was no big deal!

Gideon gaped at the Gleeful. "That's it?" he cried. "My cousin might have gone insane, the phone lines are down, there's a ghost trapped in the store with us - and all you say is 'well, duh'?!"

"I've been looking for that dumb ghost all night," the Gleeful said. "It's about time it shows its face."

He moved past Gideon and started walking towards the scene of the haunting. Gideon followed the boy seconds later, still shocked. "You KNEW about the ghost?" Gideon said.

"I'm not stupidly ignorant like everyone else in this store," the boy snapped. "Where's Pacifica and the ghost?"

"Why are you so concerned about Pacifica?" Gideon asked suspiciously.

"You said she might have gone insane. We can probably track the cause of her insanity to the ghost." The Gleeful paused for a moment before adding, "And this summer isn't the first time I've met her."

The boy only needed a glance at Gideon's confused expression to explain. "I've hunted down ghosts before. Don't act so surprised, Pines."

He had known Pacifica before this summer? That didn't make any sense. They hadn't said "Hey, long time no see!" or anything like that when Paz had been called up during a Mystery Twins show - and she'd had to introduce herself, too!

Gideon rubbed his temple. So far, this summer was making his head hurt.

Robbie couldn't believe himself. Out of all the girls in Gravity Falls, his heart had made up its mind and settled on Wendy.

It was terribly inconvenient that she worked for the opposing business, too. Ford would never let the two of them date - it had been enough just for him to stand Mabel and Gideon dating.

And that's where Gideon came in - with his master matchmaking techniques.

Except Robbie didn't know where Gideon was.

So Robbie was very much filled with dread when Nate dragged him over to where Wendy and Lee sat, watching Tambry do something stupid.

"You know, um, I should probably go check on Pacifica and Gideon -" Robbie tried, struggling against his friend's grip.

"Relax, Robs," Nate said. "I saw Gideon and the Gleeful boy run off together. They're fine."

A Pines and a Gleeful, together? "All the better to check them," Robbie argued. "We're business enemies, remember?"

Nate rolled his eyes. "Fine, but at least take your girlfriend with you."

"Don't call her my girlfriend," Robbie hissed, his face turning red under Nate's smirk. "How did you even figure that out?"

"Painfully obvious, bro. Just take her with you. Or are you -"

"Fine!" Robbie cried, slipping his wrist out of Nate's grasp. "Wendy, c'mon. Let's go check on our guests."

Wendy shrugged, stood up, and followed Robbie to the back of the store.

After a few seconds of walking together in silence, Wendy nudged Robbie. "What was that about?" she said, sounding amused.

She'd heard that whole conversation?

Robbie sighed, stuck his hands in his jean pockets, and started to bend the truth. "Nothing. Nate just teased me."

Wendy grinned. "No way. You like someone, don't you?"

"No!" Robbie protested - maybe a little too quickly. Wendy burst out laughing.

"Don't worry, your secret's safe with me." Wendy mimed zipping up her lips and flicking the key away. "To make it fair, I like someone, too."

Don't get your hopes up, Robbie told himself.

Too late. His hopes were way, way up.

They reached the Gleefuls seconds later and almost immediately at once froze at the scene before them.

Gideon was standing next to Pacifica, looking worried; the Gleeful boy looked around him, wanting to spot something; and the boy's twin sat uncomfortably close to Gideon, swinging her legs.

"What's going on?" Robbie demanded.

"I think Pacifica's lost her sanity," Gideon whispered, staring at his cousin.

"Lost her sanity?" Robbie snorted and joined Gideon's side. He looked Pacifica over - she was babbling incoherent nonsense, looked at something that didn't exist, and, what was perhaps the most alarming, her normally blue eyes were a bright, neon green.

"Do you know how she 'lost her sanity'?" Robbie asked.

Before Gideon had a change to respond, the Gleeful boy held up a colorful candy wrapper. "Smile Dip," the Gleeful said. "This happened when we were little."

"You knew Pacifica?" Robbie asked suspiciously. "Why didn't she ever tell me?"

The Gleeful looked confused, but he shook his head and continued. "Nevermind that. We need to track down this ghost."

Wendy and Robbie shared an alarmed look. Ghosts?

"You guys must be tired," Robbie said slowly. "How about we take you all home?"

"No!" Wendy exploded.

She reddened under everyone's stare.

"I - I mean, I'm sure Dipper's right," Wendy tried. "If we can't capture the ghost - won't the store go into chaos or something?"

"Yeah, close enough." The Gleeful boy put the candy wrapper back down on the floor. "Which means we need to catch this ghost and fast."

A sly smile came over Gideon's face. He glanced at Robbie with a smirk and an impish expression.

"Kid, no," Robbie warned through gritted teeth.

"Kid, yes," Gideon said mischieviously.

Then he walked over to the Gleeful boy (Dipper, was it?) and said loudly, "I think we can handle this ghost. Robbie and Wendy should stay here and look after Pacifica."

"I'll go with Gideon!" the girl declared, jumping off of her box that had served as a seat. She quickly joined Gideon and locked her elbow with his.

Dipper rolled his eyes. "Let's go."

And so the Mystery Twins (and a very annoyed and uncomfortable Gideon) headed into a secluded part of the store, leaving Wendy and Robbie to take care of Pacifica.

Robbie snuck a look at Wendy.

He would get Gideon back for this.

Without warning, Pacifica jumped up and started to run around like a chicken who had lost its head. "Girzmatov!" she shouted, a wild look in her eyes.

Wendy plopped down on the Gleeful girl's box. "We have to take care of an insane thirteen-year-olds while stuck possibly in a haunted store," she grumped. "Wonderful."

Robbie watched Pacifica as she pretended to be an airplane, shouting words in reverse that made no sense. Then he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Serves me right for losing a bet."

Wendy rolled her eyes. "Then don't trust them."

"Yeah, I've already learned that lesson well," Robbie muttered, worry for Pacifica bubbling up in his stomach. "I just - I'm worried about Pacifica."

It was a while before either of them spoke again, Pacifica chanting things in the background.

"Hey, at least you're not stuck with three brothers and an overly-cheerful dad all day," Wendy mumbled.

Robbie cracked a smile.

Maybe Gideon was a genius.

A/N: I posted some RF Mabel pictures without context in my artbook earlier this week! If you want to avoid spoilers, then avoid them, but just saying - if you see them now, you'll understand what they mean in later episodes and seasons and get that mind-blowing moment ;)
