Chapter 5: Inside the Gleeful Mansion

After the twins' second show, they walk back inside their mansion. Their uncle Ford is waiting in his armchair for them. "Hello kids," he says. "How'd your meeting go?"

Mabel smiles like a lovestruck fool and Dipper rolls his eyes and says, "Mabel's just glad the new boy agreed to go out with her."

Mabel nods. "He's so cute," she sighs.

Ford doesn't give any hint as to what he thinks of his niece trying to catch the attention of the new boy in town. "That's not what I asked," Ford says.

"Those kids are complete blundering idiots," Dipper deadpans. "I'm surprised the girl hasn't fallen into a ravine yet and it's a miracle the boy can stand on his own two feet, spineless as he is."

Ford raises an eyebrow. "So we shouldn't expect any trouble from them is what you're saying?" Both twins nod. Ford finally smiles in approval. "Good."

"Is there any real reason you wanted us to be so thorough about them?" Mabel asks.

"Bud Pines has been a thorn in my side in the past," Ford says, losing the smile. "I'd hate for his kids to cause you two the same problems he caused me." He doesn't say any more and the kids know better than to push their uncle. "Did it look like they had any idea about the Journals?"

Both kids shake their heads. "Gideon doesn't even believe in magic," Mabel adds. "So if he found the Journal he'd probably just chalk it up to a joke or something."

Ford nods to himself, looking down. "Good," he says to himself. "Very good." He looks back up to the kids. "You two have done excellently. I'm proud."

The twins don't smile at the praise, just nod their heads. "One thing though," Mabel says. Ford and Dipper look at her questioningly. "Because he doesn't believe in magic, Gideon was wondering how the volunteers disappear so quickly."

"What did you tell him?" Ford asks.

"I just smiled and told him a magician never reveals her secrets," Mabel answers.

"And?"

"And that seemed like enough for him. He didn't say anything else." Ford nods again. "Good. Keep it up you two. It'll all be worth it soon."

"We know uncle Ford," Mabel says.

"Good. Now go take care of your latest volunteer," the twins nod in unison and head towards the basement.

Back at the Mystery Shack, Paz is gushing to Robbie about the Gleeful's show and Gideon is upstairs reading. Bud is sitting at the kitchen table with a cold glass of lemonade, thinking. Maybe he shouldn't have let the kids go with those Gleeful twins. Goodness only knows what their uncle is teaching them. Bud shakes his head and leans back in his chair. He's probably just overthinking this. It's summertime. He shouldn't be worrying about past grudges and he can't keep the kids from making friends with who they want. Besides, one little playdate doesn't mean they'll be best friends with them all summer and the kids aren't stupid.

Paz walks by and waves. "Hi Uncle Bud!" he waves back as she walks upstairs.

Bud knows he can count on Gideon to keep Paz out of danger and he'd come to him if there was any. He knows he can trust his son.

Paz walks back downstairs, this time with Gideon in tow. "Dad we'll be outside!" he says on his way out the door.

"Have fun and be careful," Bud calls back.

"We will! Bye!"

"Bye!"

Outside, Gideon leads Paz towards the trees with the book tucked safely inside his jacket.

"What are we going to see?" Paz asks, looking back over her shoulder towards the Shack.

"It was something in that weird book we found," Gideon says without stopping. "And I don't think it's just a book. I think it's like a record or something."

"Of what?" Paz asks.

"Someone's autobiography maybe? Or would it be a biography?"

Paz halts and makes Gideon stop too. "Gideon, what are you talking about?" she demands.

"I really think the stuff in here is real," he says quietly.

"What stuff?"

He takes out the book and flips through the pages and stops on a random one. The entry at the top says OCD Fairies and goes on to describe just how far the fairies are willing to go to clean up a mess, whether it's theirs or not. Paz takes the book and reads the short entry. Apparently the author thought they'd be nice to have around the house until the fairies' cleaning became destructive. Quite a few just cleaned until they couldn't move anymore.

"You believe all that?" Paz asks, closing the book and handing it back to Gideon.

He tucks it back in its spot and nods. "Yeah. Well, some of it. I wanna see if we can find any of it. Then we'll know for sure."

"And why'd you bring me along?" she asks and crosses her arms.

"Because there's no one else I'd rather make a fool of myself with," Gideon smiles.

Paz giggles and nudges him forward. "Fine. Whatever. Let's go, you dork."
