Chapter 4: New Friends
The day after the twins' show, Paz and Gideon were home. When they walked into the gift shop, Bud was making up some story for a stuffed monkey with a third eye glued to its forehead and Robbie was behind the cash register. He waves when he sees them. They both wave back.
Gideon sits on the stool next to the counter and Paz sits on a treasure chest full of knick knacks against the wall.
"Hey guys," Robbie says. "Any plans for today?"
Gideon shrugs. "Not really."
"We could go see the Gleeful twins?" Paz suggests.
Gideon shakes his head. "It wasn't very good."
Robbie looks surprised. "Wow."
"What?"
"Nothing. Just a lot of people think the Gleefuls are the greatest thing since sliced bread," Robbie says. "It's unusual if someone doesn't like the show."
Paz giggles. "Gideon doesn't like magic," she says. "He thinks it's all just smoke and mirrors."
"It is," Gideon says. "You can see how they do most of their tricks."
"You're not supposed to try and explain the tricks," Robbie says with a smile. "You're supposed to be willing to believe it."
"That's what I told him!" Paz says smiling wide.
A customer walks over, holding a snow globe and T-shirt in her arms, and Robbie excuses himself for the moment. After the customer leaves, they resume the conversation.
"So, Gideon, you don't believe in any type of magic?" Robbie asks.
"Nope," he says with finality. "Never will."
"Oh, boo!" Paz says.
Robbie chuckles. "Seems like you've got your mind made up," he says.
Gideon nods with his arms crossed.
The gift shop door opens with a jingle. The Gleeful twins themselves step inside and scan the little shop. They don't look too happy to be there. They're wearing what one could only assume are their 'street clothes' even though the skirt Mabel is wearing looks like it costs more than everything in the gift shop combined.
Robbie and the kids exchange startled and confused looks. "What are they doing in here?" Robbie asks in a whisper.
Paz shrugs without looking away.
"How are we supposed to know?" Gideon whispers back.
The twins' eyes land on Gideon and Paz and they strut over and Robbie actually looks like he's nervous just to be interacting with them.
"We need to talk to you two," Dipper demands.
Paz is the first to stammer out some words. "U-... Us? Why?"
"Does it matter?" he asks with an eyebrow raised.
Gideon and Paz exchange looks and slide off their seats and lead the twins to the living room.
"You guys can sit wherever you like," Paz offers with a friendly smile.
"Thank you but this shouldn't take too long," Mabel says, staring at a stain on the floor in disdain. She manages to tear her eyes away and actually smile at them. "We'd just like to be the first to welcome you two to Gravity Falls," she says sweetly, looking from Paz to Gideon. "We noticed you at our show yesterday and we know everyone in town. It's nice to see some new faces, right?"
"Right," Dipper says. "We'd also like to see you at our next shows, if you're able."
Paz smiles at him and he smiles politely back and glances around the messy room.
"I'd love if you could stay for a bit after the show," Mabel purrs to Gideon.
His cheeks turn faintly pink and he looks down.
"We'll think about it," Paz jumps in. "Thank you both so much." She puts on her friendliest smile.
The twins look satisfied. "It's no trouble at all," Mabel says smiling. "We'll see you around town."
"Bye!" Paz waves and doesn't stop smiling until they're both out the door of the gift shop. Then she whirls on Gideon, her smile genuine and excited. "She totally likes you! Oh my gosh!"
Gideon couldn't look more uncomfortable. "Uh..."
"C'mon, she's pretty," Paz says.
"I don't know, Paz," he says, his cheeks still pink. "I barely know her."
"So we'll stay after a few of their shows and talk to them and get to know them." When Gideon stays silent her smile turns gentle. "C'mon, Gid. Just imagine your dad's face when you end up with the prettiest girl in this whole town."
That makes him smile a little. "Okay," he finally relents. "We'll stay after one of their shows."
She almost jumps up and down. "Ohh! You're gonna have a girlfriend!"
"Shhhh! Not so loud!"
The next night the Gleefuls had another show scheduled and Paz and Gideon stayed and watched. Another volunteer was called up and disappeared after the show. Gideon decided he'd have to ask about how they made the volunteers disappear so fast as he and Paz walked around the back of the tent. The twins were already occupied with a small group of girls asking them for autographs which they gave happily. When the girls, squealing over the signatures, left the twins smiled at Paz and Gideon and waved them over.
"Hi," Mabel says, looking more at Gideon than Paz. "I hope you liked the show." She bats her eyelashes. Dipper rolls his eyes.
"I did," Paz says happily. "It was really cool when-"
"And what did you think, Gideon?" Mabel interrupts.
Gideon glances away. "I don't really buy all that magic stuff," he says. He accidentally catches Dipper's eye and looks away again, this time at the ground. "Just seems too... Fake, y'know?"
"Oh, it's real," Mabel assures him. Dipper clears his throat loudly. It's Mabel's turn to roll her eyes. "Anyway, if you don't believe every minute of what we're doing," she goes on. "It's my job to make you."
Gideon smiles nervously. "I don't know about that," he says.
"Nonsense. Now tell me what seems so 'fake' about our magic show."
Dipper gets stuck entertaining Paz while Mabel tries to flirt. "Are you two related?" he asks, looking from her to Gideon. "It's a little difficult to see a resemblance if you are."
She smiles. "We're cousins, actually." She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. "You two are twins, right?" Dipper nods. "So have you ever done that thing where you say the exact same thing at the exact same time?"
He scoffs. "Tch. No." Then he adds, "Well, every once in a while but never on purpose."
She looks up at him as she says, "You're the quiet one, aren't you?"
"Yes, I guess I am. Mabel needs the attention more than me." He lowers his voice. "I think she'd die without it."
Paz giggles and Dipper smiles. "So do you guys actually like this much blue? Or is it like, your gimmick?"
He thinks for a moment then says, "Well, when you think of magic, what color do you think of?"
She nods and smiles a little. "Blue."
"Exactly."
They go on talking like that for a few more minutes before the Gleefuls decide they should probably start packing up.
"Well, I'll see you around," Paz says and waves.
"I hope so," Dipper says.
"Would you like to maybe get a soda or something sometime?" Mabel asks with her best smile.
Gideon's cheeks turn noticeably darker. "Uh, sure," he says with another one of his nervous smiles.
"Great!" Mabel chirps. "When's a good time for you?"
"Any time, really," he says.
"How's tomorrow at around 6?" she asks.
He manages to nod. "Good. I'll see you then?"
"I'll see you then," she says.
Just as he's walking off, Dipper grabs him by the arm and stares into his eyes when he says, "Don't hurt my sister." and lets go. Gideon doesn't know what to say so he runs to catch up to Paz.
