Masquerade

"This has to go without a hitch." Mabel click clacked over to her brother who was fiddling with his amulet. "Brother dear, the guests are going to be here any minute!" Mabel fretted. "Go change!"

"I kind of like this-"

"Go. Change." Mabel repeated, slower.

"Fine." Dipper heaved a sigh and proceeded to his room to change. "Stupid masquerade ball."

"Urgh, Gideon, why do we have to go to this stupid masquerade ball?" Pacifica slumped onto her bed and stared at the ceiling.

"Because it's the biggest party this town will ever see!" He exclaimed, "and I wanna be there!"

"But honestly," Pacifica frowned, "I doubt this party will be worth it. Gideon, it's being hosted by the freaking Gleefuls!"

"So? We'll just avoid them." He sounded like he had planned this two weeks ago.

"Yeah, but even if I try to avoid one of the twins, he finds me right away." Pacifica murmured, thinking about Dipper Freaking Arrogant Gleeful. "He perturbes me."

Gideon paused and wrinkled his nose. "Perturbes? Paz, why can't you just say 'pisses'?" He asked.

"Because I prefer not to." Pacifica explained. "Now how am I supposed to go to this thing? I don't have anything to wear!"

"Hmm." Gideon hummed as he walked over to a desk. He pulled a wallet out of this desk and snatched out a credit card. "My father said that this was for an emergency." He explained, with Pacifica giving him a confused look. "This is definitely an emergency."

"I dunno, can I see this in another color?"

"Stop being stubborn." Mabel rolled her eyes at her brother, as she held up a red tie. "You're not wrong here, red is definitely not your color." Mabel tossed the tie on Dipper's bed and fussed more with his outfit.

"Mabel, stop being fussy, I can dress myself in the proper attire." He promised, pushing his sister out of his room, "and besides, shouldn't you be focused on the ball?"

That one phrase, sent Mabel sprinting down the stairs to the ball room. Dipper chuckled, pleased with himself, and continued to look for a tie. I might just have to go with my amulet. He thought, holding it tightly in his hand. But what about..... he turned to his closet and pulled out a black tie. "That's better." Dipper murmured, and he quickened fashioned it around his neck and adjusted it. He looked at the clock on his wall, "time to put on a show."

***

"Please don't tell me that I have to wear heels!" Pacifica exclaimed, pointing at the shoes. "These will be the death of me, Gideon!"

"Calm down." Gideon rolled his eyes teasingly, "you'll have to since we can't find flats in your size."

"Are you saying I have big feet?" She gasped.

"What?! No! I'm saying that they either have super big flats, or tiny ones!" He explained.

Pacifica crossed her arms over her chest and sighed. "Now what about the.. .the dress."

"I'm so glad you asked!" Gideon exclaimed, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards a rack of dresses he chose. "Pick on you like?"

"They are all...."

"What?" He asked.

"Ball gowns." Pacifica finished. "I dunno how I feel about that. Can't I wear something simple?"

"Fine." Gideon pouted, "whatever."

***

"This is much better." Dipper said, looking at the black suit he was wearing. "It's perfect." Just like me.

"Oh you're so humble." Mabel rolled her eyes and leaned on the door frame.

"Don't you have a party to run?" Dipper asked, hoping that his question would send his dearest sister away.

"I do, but I needed to make sure my brother wasn't wearing something ridiculous." She walked over to him and made sure his outfit was perfect. "Finally, you did something right."

"You're one to talk." He called to her as she walked out of his room.

***

Pacifica stared at it. Sure it was beautiful, but she'd never wear it except for now. It was sea foam green, shiny, long, but not puffy like a ball gown, it was instead very sleek. It fit her, and was in her price range. She had to get it. Pacifica snatched the dress and quickly found Gideon who was busily chatting away with some girl who was also going to the masquerade ball. "Gideon let's go!" Pacifica exclaimed, grabbing Gideon's elbow.

"Bye Dot! Hopefully I'll know who you are with the mask on!" Gideon yelled to the girl.

Mask. Pacifica thought. I still need one! "Gideon where would we buy masks?"

***

"Finally, you're ready." Mabel rolled her eyes before tossing a black mask at Dipper. "Now wear this."

"Stupid masquerade ball." Dipper murmured, before putting the mask on. "Mabel, have any of the guests arrived yet?"

"The party starts in ten minutes." Mabel explained, "so no."

"Good." Dipper murmured, looking around the room. "Could we redecorate?"

"There is no redecorating." Mabel smacked Dipper on the head. "Now look presentable."

"Do I ever look anything else?"

***

"Gideon look at all the people." Pacifica stared at the crowd of people in the Gleeful Manor. "It's like they're drawn to it like moths to light."

"Or they like the party." Gideon stated making Pacifica's explanation seem extremely complex. "Just enjoy the party, Paz. I'm gonna have to hide from Mabel, so if she asks where I am, tell her you don't know."

Pacifica shook her head and adjusted her mask, "Gideon, it's a masquerade ball, she won't notice you."

"Heh, right. But still." He walked off leaving Pacifica alone surrounded by a bunch of mask people. Pacifica stared at the people wearing masks and meandered toward the buffet table. She looked at all the food, and saw multiple types of food that she had never hear of, when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up and saw a man with a black mask on. "Care to dance?" He asked, extending a hand toward her.

Pacifica noticed there was a crowd of girls following the masked stranger, and that's all it took. "Sure, it seems you're in need of a little help." She said, gesturing to the pool of girls swarming him.

He chuckled as they walked over to the center of the ballroom.

***

"I've never ballroom danced before." Pacifica said. The two teenagers were laughing and talking outside the Manor.

"Really? Could've fooled me." Masked man chuckled. "But seriously, you did wonderfully."

"Heh, thanks." Pacifica fiddled with her dress. "I wish this night wouldn't end." She murmured. "Being with you, even though I have no clue who you are, was magical."

"I'm wondering who you are, as well." He murmured. "I'd love to tell you who I am, but I'm worried that it'll ruin the magic of this." Pacifica stood on her tippy toes and kissed the masked man lightly. Dipper kissed her back and pulled her close to him. When Pacifica pulled away from him, she had an idea.

"How about this," Pacifica started, "we both face opposite directions and pull off our masks, and on the count of three, we face each other. Got it?"

He nodded and turned around. Pacifica copied him, and pulled off her mask. "One." She said.

Dipper pulled off his mask and gripped it tightly in his hand. "Two."

"Three." They said in sync and turned to face each other, but they each saw something they didn't expect. Dipper Gleeful saw his sister's enemy; Pacifica Southeast.

And Pacifica Southeast saw her cousin's enemy; Dipper Gleeful.

"D-Dipper?" Pacifica asked, gulping.

"Pacifica?" Dipper said, completely shocked.

"......." Pacifica stayed silent and fiddled with her dress more.

"....." Dipper was also silent, and he stared at his feet.

"Why didn't you tell me?!" Pacifica shouted right as Dipper said, "why'd you kiss me?!"

Pacifica frowned. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Why'd you kiss me?" Dipper repeated.

"I asked you first," Pacifica glared at Dipper.

"Well I asked you second." He countered.

"I kissed you because...I didn't know you were you!" Pacifica explained. "I would never ever ever kiss you."

"But you just did." Dipper informed her. "Why didn't I tell you? Because that's the point of a masquerade ball. It's so people don't know your identity."

"......." Pacifica was silent some more.

".....so can we kiss again?" Dipper asked, making Pacifica jerk her head upward. "Is...is that still an option?"
