Pacifica walked in to the waiting room and looked around. It was like death had touched every corner of the room and decided to stay to ruin every happy thought you had. She sat on a pearl white waiting chair and looked at the clock. 1:55. Five minutes till I can see him, she thought. She picked up her purse from the ground and pulled the third Journal out of it, to read so time could pass. She was surprised that Mabel didn't show up, or any of his actual family. She remembered the first time she actually realized that he wasn't as bad as she thought. That was when they were thirteen. Ten years ago. And since then, they had grown closer until Mabel suggested that they should date. "Um excuse me," a nurse came up to Pacifica with a clip board,
"Yes?" Pacifica asked, hoping it was good news.
"Are you Pacifica Southeast?" She asked, flipping through papers on her clip board.
"Yeah, that's me." She announced. "What do you need?"
"Well, Mr Gleeful is ready to see you." She replied, "I'll show you to his room." Pacifica grabbed her purse and Journal, and followed the nurse down this dark looking hallway. Pacifica bit her lip as she noticed all the people-on this floor of the hospital-were very sickly looking. She started to get nervous about what she had just figured out, and that's when the nurse decided to make small talk with her. "So what's your connection with, Mason Gleeful?"
Pacifica-at first-was confused by what she meant. She remembered that his actual name wasn't Dipper. It was actually Mason. "I'm his....girlfriend." She replied. "We've been together for a couple years."
"Oh." The nurse smiled sadly. "He's been asking about you."
"What do you mean?" Pacifica asked.
"Every time I come in his room, he's always asking if you were in the waiting room." She explained. "I always hated seeing the disappointment on his face when I told him you weren't around."
"Really?" Pacifica asked, shocked. She was never able to see Dipper because it was either a bad time for him, and she hated seeing him....like this.
"Mhm. He misses you so much, you know?" She continued.
"I....know. It's difficult for both of us right now." Pacifica explained.
The nurse stopped outside a door, "I'll let you know when you can come inside." She knocked on the door, lightly, and walked inside quickly, not allowing Pacifica see anything in the room. Pacifica sighed and leaned against the wall, thinking about what was happening in the room. Five minutes passed, by the time she was allowed to come inside. The nurse smiled at her as she walked past. "I'll come get you when visiting hours are through." Pacifica thanked her and looked over at the hospital bed.
Dipper was propped up against two fluffy pillows, but it looked like it was a struggle for him, to sit up. "Hey, you came." He smiled tiredly and it looked fake.
Pacifica walked over to Dipper and wrapped her arms around him. "Why wouldn't I?"
He looked as if he was about to say something, but chose not to. "Where's Mabel?" He asked, hoping his sister would show up.
Pacifica sighed. "She.....she didn't show up. So you're stuck with me."
"Well I'm glad it's you." He replied, "you don't know how boring it gets here! They won't even let me walk around anymore because they think I'll fall and hurt myself even more! And I have no hair products or gels here to fix this," he pointed to his hair and groaned in frustration, "mess that is my hair."
Pacifica found herself smiling. This was the Dipper she knew and loved. He seemed like himself when he was complaining about his hair, but before, when he had first entered the hospital, he was down and barely spoke to anyone. Every time she visited when he was first enrolled in the hospital, he would only mumble a couple words. The usual words he spoke then, were 'hello' and 'goodbye'. She ruffled his hair a little. "I think it looks fine."
He rolled his eyes in a playful manner. "Right. Thanks Paz."
Pacifica brought a chair closer to his bed and sat on it, telling him everything that happened while he was here. "And then Gideon almost lit the Journals on fire!" She exclaimed, "that's when Bud told us to get out of the house. Because even though we're family, he doesn't like our visits very often." He smiled up at her, and laid down. "Things at Gleeful Manor get boring and lonely without you. Sure, Mabel's there to help me....through this, but I really want you there instead." She realized that after he said that, she made a mistake. Mentioning that Mabel would help her through this, was a huge mistake and she regretted it as soon as she said it.
Dipper's expression hardened and his eyes darkened, making the room feel much darker. "So she helps you through this, but she doesn't try to help me at all?! All I've wanted since I got here is her to show up at least once, but she hasn't!" And will never ever do that! MY TWIN SISTER DOESN'T CARE ENOUGH TO SHOW UP WHEN I'M STRUGGLING TO EVEN STAND IN THIS [insert swear word of your choice here] HOSPITAL!"
Pacifica blinked in surprise, she didn't expect Dipper to freak out like that, and it actually scared her slightly. Dipper has changed, she thought. "You know she wants to see you but she finds it hard to find time to put aside-"
"So she doesn't even have time for her brother anymore?!" He shouted. "This is SO LIKE HER!"
Pacifica flinched, but kept going. "Dipper, she does have time for your but-"
"Why are you defending her?!" He asked, getting more furious by the minute. "You know she's in the wrong! And yet you're still defending her!"
"I'm not choosing sides but-"
"Just stop!" He yelled, right as the nurse came back into the room. She looked at Pacifica with shock written all over her face. Dipper made a gasping sound and he covered his face with his hands. Pacifica heard a sniffling sound and her eyes went wide as she realized Dipper was crying. He never cried. Never. He wiped his eyes but still a few teardrops remained on his face. "....I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." He managed to say, but he seemed happier now. He can't even keep his emotions together anymore, Pacifica thought as she covered her mouth.
Dipper looked down in his lap and the nurse escorted Pacifica outside, and told her to come back the next day because he wasn't himself.
Pacifica decided to wait a few days before returning to the hospital. Mostly because of what happened and what he said. She couldn't believe how much this had changed him, she wished he was the same guy she fell in love with but she knew that when he made it through this, things would never be the same. She finally made time to take a trip to the hospital, hoping that Mabel would come with, and to her surprise, Mabel decided to come along. Pacifica smiled knowing that Dipper would be happy that she came, or would he be angry that it took Mabel that long to come along?
Pacifica and Mabel walked up the stairs to the floor Dipper was on chatting about what type of color looked better on Mabel. "I honestly think blue or black." Pacifica explained, while Mabel nodded. They arrived on the floor that Dipper was on in no time at all and proceeded to walk to his room, which was the closest room to the stairs. Right as they turned the corner, two nurses ran past them and into Dipper's room. Pacifica and Mabel looked at each other, before running to Dipper's room to see what the commotion was about. Pacifica heard the nurses shouting for a doctor and other things, "stabilize him!" One shouted while the other one shouted, "we're losing him!" Pacifica stood their in shock, while Mabel's face showed no emotion. "Come on Mason, just pull through for a little longer!" Another nurse said. Pacifica stared into the room and saw Dipper's shaking arm gripping the rail of the hospital bed like if he let go, he would be lost without it. Everything was happening so fast that Pacifica couldn't concentrate on anything that anyone was saying. All of a sudden, it was if time had slowed down and Pacifica took everything in. And that's when she saw Dipper's grip on the rail, loosen and fall onto the bed. Pacifica's eyes widened and covered her mouth with her hand to keep from...anything. A doctor pushed past Mabel and Pacifica, "you two can't be in here right now!"
"But he's my brother!" Mabel protested at the same time Pacifica yelled "he's my boyfriend!" The doctor didn't listen to them, and shut the door in their faces. Mabel's face showed a mixture of emotions-like anger and sadness-while Pacifica's bottom lip quivered. Both girls sat on the bench outside of the hospital room waiting for the news. Pacifica was crying into Mabel's shoulder while Mabel pretended that she was fine, but Pacifica saw her tears. "He's going to be okay....won't he?" Pacifica finally asked, between shaky breaths.
Mabel sighed and whispered. "Only time will tell." Pacifica sobbed again and Mabel patted her shoulder, trying to calm her down. Pacifica closed her eyes, and tried to imagine Dipper's smile. When he was happy. Before all of this. But now all she could imagine, was his arm suddenly going limp, and dropping to his side. "He has to be okay." She whispered to herself. "He just....has to."
Pacifica opened her eyes right as she heard the door open. She realized that she had fallen asleep, and so had Mabel. The doctor walked towards the two of them with a clipboard in hand. Pacifica shook Mabel awake and while Mabel was irritated, once Pacifica told her that it was news about Dipper, she immediately perked up and stared at the doctor with hopeful eyes. The doctor stood in front of the two girls, gripping the clipboard with a solemn face. "How did you two sleep?" He asked nicely.
"Fine." Mabel replied, looking a little sleepy.
"It was okay." Pacifica lied, she had worried the entire night.
"That's good." The doctor nodded.
"Okay cut the crap," Mabel suddenly said surprising the doctor and Pacifica. "How's my brother??"
The doctor went silent. So Mabel repeated her question. "I repeat, how's my brother??" Pacifica kept her fingers crossed behind her back, silently pleading that he would be alright.
"Dipper he....." the doctor sighed, "...he didn't make it."
Pacifica felt herself choke up, her throat dried up because all the water was leaking out from her eyes. Mabel covered her mouth and held back her tears, but Pacifica didn't care anymore. She burst into uncontrollable sobs. The doctor didn't know what to do, so he simply walked into the room from whence he came. Mabel hugged Pacifica and just held her. They had both lost someone they cared deeply about. "I didn't....even get....a..chance to say.....goodbye." Pacifica managed to day between sobs. "And the last....t-thing we did....was...argue!" She felt like a part of her had been ripped away from her.
"I didn't even have a chance to see him." Mabel choked out. "Before he....He..."
Pacifica tried to dry her eyes but the tears kept pouring down her face like a broken faucet. But that's what she was now. She, was broken.
Pacifica walked outside to get some fresh air while Mabel went to talk to Dipper's doctors. She wiped her eyes and stared at the sky. Are you there? Are you watching me right now? She asked him, even though she knew the answer. Just know this; Dipper, I love you.
