Chapter 10

*CHLOE'S POV*

 "Morgann, I just don't know." I sighed, glancing at the looming house growing closer.

 "Come on, don't be a chicken." She replied, keeping her eyes on the road.

 "I'm serious."

 "So am I."

 I sighed again, this time with annoyance. After getting home from having lunch with Louis two days ago, I couldn't keep my mind off him. Even though that section of my brain was clearly marked "DANGER! WILL ONLY BREAK YOUR HEART!". So I told Morgann and she said that I had to visit him and tell him how I felt. She explained that he was probably feeling the same way, and that's why he followed me to the salon. It seemed like a good idea yesterday, but I wasn't feeling so sure anymore.

 "Get out and go." Morgann said, stopping the car in the driveway and unlocking the doors.

 "Please don't make me." I pleaded.

 "If you don't go, you're walking home." She threatened.

 "You do know that you're fake relationship with Louis was one of the reasons I'm not with him now, right?" I asked. It was a low blow, but it was true.

 Morgann clenched her hands on the steering wheel and I knew she wasn't messing around with me walking, so I reluctantly got out of the car and walked slowly up to the door, turning around to look at Morgann.

 After three long minutes of stalling, I reached the porch, taking a deep breath. I saw some rustling in the upstairs window and decided Louis was home. I knocked on the door and immediately regretted it, wanting to run back to the car where Morgann was waiting. A couple seconds later, the door swung open to Harry wearing nothing but boxers, his too-long hair a mess on top of his head.

 "Chloe?" He asked, rubbing his eyes. "You woke me up."

 "Harry, it's four o'clock." I said, checking my watch.

 He groaned and walked back inside. I followed him to the kitchen where he poured himself some coffee. He added sugar and cream, his movements as slow as mine when I was walking up to the house. After a few sips, he looked back up, his eyes seeming more awake. He set the mug down and held up his finger, asking me to wait.

 He disappeared upstairs, taking the stairs two at a time. I let go of the breath I had been holding in and collapsed on the bar stool next to me. What was I going to say to Louis? What if he wanted nothing to do with me? Maybe he wasn't actually following me the other day and it was just a coincidence. Oh God, what if this whole thing was a misunderstanding and he was with someone else? What if that someone was Eleanor?

 Harry came back downstairs with a black t-shirt on, saving me from my horror movie-worthy what-ifs.

 "So." He started, sipping his coffee. "What can I help you with?"

 I started to open my mouth to reply, but quickly closed it. Did I really want to talk to Louis? I could just tell Morgann Louis wasn't here...but no, that would be lying and I was trying to stop doing that.

 "I'm here to talk to Louis." I stated, trying to stand tall.

 A look of worry and nervousness crossed Harry's face, but it was gone as fast as it arrived.

 "He's not here."

 At first I believed him, turning back around to leave, but after I turned around, he let out a breath. It sounded like he was letting out a nervous breath and I whipped back around.

 "Harry."

 "What? He's not." He insisted.

 "Don't lie to me." I said.

 "Chloe, please stop." Harry begged, his green eyes pleading.

 "Harry what's going on?" I asked, bringing my hand to my forehead.

 What if he really was dating someone? I mean I hadn't heard about it in the tabloids, but anything is possible, right?

 "He can't see you."

 "What? Why not." I demanded, crossing my arms.

 "He..." Harry started. "He just can't."

 "Oh my God. Is he with someone?" I asked, choking out the words.

 "No, Chloe that's not it." He told me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, trying to steer me back towards the door.

 "Then what?" I sighed, breaking free of his grasp.

 "He has to get over you Chloe. It's not healthy for him to be hung up on one girl his whole life." He said.

 "Yes it is. It's called true love, Harry." I replied, starting for the stairs.

 "Chloe, true love isn't real. This isn't some stupid fairy-tale, this is your life. It's Louis's life too, and it's not fair to either of you for you both to be hurting all the time. You have to move on." He called, making me stop on the third stair.

 I felt myself getting angry at Harry and turned around to face him. He didn't get it. This wasn't his place to interfere.

 "Did Louis make that decision on his own, or did someone else make it for him?" I replied, determined to get the truth.

 "Well..."

 "Harry! You can't tell me that I can't see him anymore. That's not your choice it's mine and it's Louis's. Just stay out of it, okay?" I told him, marching back up the stairs.

 I paused outside of Louis's bedroom door and took a deep breath. This was it. This was the last time I would tell him I loved him, and he could either take it or leave it. That's what I would tell him too. Forget planning what I was going to say. I've got this.

 I opened his door, my head held high and saw that nobody was there. I glanced around the corner to see if the bathroom door was closed, but it was hanging wide open, empty. What the hell?

 "Chloe, wait-" Harry started, coming up behind me.

 He stopped just like I did when he saw nobody was inside.

 "Where is he?" He asked, looking around.

 I pointed at the open window, where the curtain was whipping around and sighed. "He's gone."

~~~
 "So you have no idea where he went?" Morgann asked, passing me a mug full of tea.
 "No." I replied, taking a small sip.
 "And you said that Harry wasn't lying about the fact he didn't know either?"
 "Yeah, he's no actor, believe me." I said.
 She seemed to think for a moment, casually drinking her tea, before her face lit up and it was like someone switched on a light bulb inside her head.
 "What about that place that you two used to hang out at?" She suggested.
 I shrugged. There were a lot of places we used to hang out at when we were in high school. It could literally be anywhere.
 "The one he took you to after you got wasted." She added.
 Now it was my turn to light up. I told Morgann I was going to check and thanked her. I grabbed my cotton hoodie and rushed down the apartment building's stairs, almost falling twice.
 I got to my car and pulled open the door, shoving the key into the ignition. I back out of my parking space and started driving the long thirty minutes to the cliff-hanger.
 *LOUIS'S POV*
 I tossed the empty bottle on the ground beside me and sighed, pushing my hands through my hair. What was I going to do? I heard Chloe and Harry arguing at the house earlier, and what had I done? Run away like a freaking coward. What was wrong with me? I heard Chloe say she wanted to talk and then freaked out, jumping out my damn window.
 The beer bottle that I just tossed rolled to the edge of the small cliff and fell. It sounded stupid, but in that moment I would do anything to go with it. I just couldn't figure what was best. Do I tell her the truth, or tell her what everybody else expects me to tell her?
 "I thought I might find you here."
 Well, this is a better time than ever to make my decision.
 "Why'd you run off?"
 I sighed and sat down, dangling my legs off the edge of the cliff. I felt Chloe sit down next to me, and I looked up: she was staring out at the city, all lit up and glowing.
 "Louis please just tell me." She begged, still not meeting my glance.
 "I want to tell you that I'm in love with you, I really do, but neither one of us can risk anything right now. Harry was right, it's not smart for us to be together. We'll find other people if that's what it comes to, or if we're meant to be together then we'll find our way back to each other, but that time isn't now." I told her, my eyes filling with tears.
 God, this was so hard. Too hard.
 "Okay." She mumbled, standing up and dusting off her jeans.
 She turned and walked away, bringing her hands up to her face.
