CHAPTER 2
Hello! So here is the second chapter of Reversal!! Thank you a lot to give this fiction a chance! :) Xx
"We've arrived" Alex's warm voice wakes me up from my drowsiness. We finally made it to the campus.
I rub the sleepiness away from my eyes and look outside to observe my new environment while Alex parks on a free spot in front of the dormitory.
I never came here before, but I saw pictures on the university portal. It looks huge. I hope I am not going to get lost.
My father and my brother haven't studied here; they both went to Yale while I preferred the University of Washington. My father wasn't enthusiastic by my choice, but when I told him I wanted to major in Business, he eased. I know he wants the best for me, but Yale has never been my dream. I don't know what I want to do and contradicting him was probably the reason why I acted against his will. A shrink would probably say I'm only seeking for attention.
We take my baggage with us, which consist of big luggage and a smaller box and because I haven't brought a lot, we will only need one trip to bring everything into my new room.
There are many people around. Parents and kids are hugging, crying, carrying bags, boxes, luggage, and there are others who are simply enjoying the nice outside weather. There are so many emotions displayed in such a limited area and in spite of the number of people around, I don't know a single soul.
I still can't believe my future starts now. My heart skips a beat at this simple thought.
A lot of indications are plastered everywhere so finding the main entrance isn't difficult.
It's a slightly overweighed talkative girl with a question mark on a blue t-shirt who welcomes us as soon as we step into the building for the registration.
"Hi and welcome. I hope you've found us easily. I am Abigail but call me Aby. Tell me your name and I will tell you where you are," she cheerfully exclaims with a high pitch singing voice full of energy that I somewhat find annoying.
She moves behind a desk in front of which we follow her. She keeps staring at us, indicating through her look, she is still waiting for an answer.
"Olivia Valdez," I reply, placing a quite forced smile on my lips.
Even when she is browsing the list for my name, she keeps on mumbling. I bet she's the kind of person who can't stand the silence.
"Here you are. Room 303D. Come with me; I'll show you. This place is such a maze, but you'll get used to it, don't worry," she giggles.
She asks me to sign next to my name and to show her my papers before she grabs the room key.
We follow her along the different corridors. She keeps on talking about things I don't bother much to listen, but I get it revolves around the university.
Alex gets bored as well and starts to discreetly checks on his phone. I try to look more attentive though, nodding from time to time to what she is saying, faking my interest to the multiples information she gives, but I can't help looking around.
Lost in my own thoughts, I almost bump into someone. The first thing that catches my attention is the death glare he is looking at me with. I return him the favor. But I don't have the time to say anything. A girl grabs his arm and presses him to follow her. I watch him moving away until he disappears from my sight. I sigh and catch up Aby and my brother. Alex frowns, but Aby opens the door and gets our attention back.
"Here you are. 303D. As I told you, the building is quite new. Just between us, this building is way better than the B. I hope everything is going to be okay. Your roommate has not arrived yet so that you can choose your side of the room." Aby says while she is opening the door with her enthusiasm that seems never to fade away.
She lets us enter first and stays in the door frame. "If you need me, don't hesitate to call or look for me. Even for just a chat. I'll be mostly downstairs all day. Okay, I'll let you settle now," she claps her hands.
We thank her, and she winks before disappearing into the corridor after we assured her that we don't need anything else.
The first thing that hits me when I get in is the room smells. The odor of the cleaning products itches my nose. Frowning, I open the window to let the fresh air getting in before I look around. It is way smaller than I imagined, and I wasn't dreaming big.
"Welcome to your new home." Alex laughs as he collapses on one of the bed.
"Shut up!" I playfully reply.
I place my hands on my hips. This can't be as bad as it looks, with a bit of organization, I should find a way to get through it. It is not like I had a choice anyway.
"You can still ask for an apartment," he innocently reminds me as he folds his arms under his head.
I prefer not to reply. It wasn't mandatory to stay here, but I chose to. It's a part of university life I want to experience, and I have plenty of time later to live on my own. He has lived in a dormitory on his first year, my dad did too, and they both have fantastic souvenirs of it, and I want the same even though I'm apprehensive of what it's like to live with someone else.
"Which bed are you taking?" Alex asks.
"Definitely not the one you have your dirty ass on." I teasingly retort with a smirk, looking up and down at him which makes him stupidly smile.
By not being here, my roommate gives me the entire space to tidy up my belongings, which is hardly a luxury in this tiny space.
Alex helps me unpacking. I want to empty the big luggage to bring it back home because there is no space here to store it. We spend the next hour trying to find a place for all my belongings. Alex is a great help, more than I would have imagined. The closet is very small, but I more or less success to put everything inside. Alex nicely makes my bed. We are done in no time at all.
"I just have to decorate my part of the room; then it'll look great." I scan the room and can't help thinking we did a good job.
"You owe me lunch now," he reminds with a broad grin.
"I knew you didn't help me out of the kindness of your heart. You and your devious stomach." I laugh, making him laughing too.
"I hope we aren't going to bump into your new best friend," he jokes after he grabbed the now empty luggage. I laugh. Poor Aby. She is really nice, but she is just too much for me.
We are about to leave the room when the doorknob moves. We both stop our movements and stare at the opening door.
