“Naruto-kun~!”

Oh that heavenly, sweet voice.

You could listen to it all day and never grow tired of it. You could allow that divine melody ring like a broken record in your head and you’d let yourself indulge in it like it was some sweet drug.

Yes, you could.

Despite the fact that she voices out another guy’s name and not yours.

“Naruto-kun~!”

You stood and gently smiled at the Hyuga who was running in your direction. It would’ve been a more intense feeling if you knew that she was running into your arms, but even if you turn the world upside down, she’d still be running towards a certain blonde who stood a few feet behind your back.

Hyuga Hinata ran past you, her eyes fixed on the person she was calling out to. She was like a gush of wind that slightly brushed your face, and your presence came unnoticed once again. She ran past you like you did not exist in that particular area.

Existence. How you wish that for once in your life, the great Hyuga Hinata would notice your existence. But there’s nothing you can do. Her heart is set on someone else and you knew, you clearly knew that it would not be so easily changed. Even bringing someone back from the dead would be easier than to make the Hyuga Hinata have her attention to someone else.

For a moment, you stood there, admiring her as she talked to the future Hokage, her eyes brimming with happiness, a faint blush on her cheeks, and unwarranted joy was evident in her overall expression. And for the first time in many years, you did not feel hurt at this. On the contrary, you were feeling happy. Happy for her.

She was going to be the wife of the Hokage. Her dreams are finally coming true. And yours… shattered in a million uneven pieces. It was a miracle that you are still smiling at this point.

You slightly turned to the side and took out the pieces of paper from your backpocket. They were unsent letters. You gripped the papers, slightly crumpling it in the process and sighed. These letters will remain unsent ‘til the end of time. You turned around, throwing the papers in a nearby bin, then looked back at Hinata. You internally wished her all the best and left the spot.

A slight brush on your shoulders snapped you out of trance. When you turned, you saw a familiar face, lightly smiling at you and uttering an apology.

“Hey, uhh, (Y/n). I’m sorry about that, I wasn’t looking where I was walking.”

You were surprised. Someone knew your name after all. “You know me?”

Her eyeballs turned from side to side before looking back at you. “Well yes. We were in the same class, remember? You were from Team Kakashi and I’m from Team Gai. But I guess this is the first time we’ve talked?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve seen your works at the academy. I’m somewhat familiar with them.”

This took you by surprise even more. “How did you know about them?”

“Well, I was specializing on weaponry and I happen to stumble on a few scrolls that belonged to you. I’ll never forget them. They’re amazing.”

You smiled at her. “Thank you.”

“See you around, (Y/n),” she said before turning.

You blinked before catching up on her. “Wait, I didn’t get your name.”

She let out a short laugh and held out a delicate hand to you. “My name’s Tenten.”

You took her hand and smiled once again. And this time, someone smiled genuinely back at you. A smile that had changed your world in an instant. And a smile that you never knew you’ll always see from that day on.
