Chapter XIII
"There is nothing crueler than letting a dream end midway." ~Shoura Aisawa (My Hero Academia)
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
We landed our Gummi Ship in Halloween Town, where it was forever Halloween. We were dressed up in the same costumes when we here last year. Sora was a vampire, Donald was a mummy, Goofy was Frankenstein, and I was a witch. "Are you sure this is Halloween Town?" Goofy asked.
"Yeah, it is," Sora replied. "Why are you asking?"
"Because...it doesn't seem very Halloween right now," Goofy remarked.
"Maybe-whoa!" Sora shouted.
Something flew last us. Donald screamed, Goofy covered his eyes and trembled, and Sora cried out, "Hey, it's Zero! How've you been boy?"
Zero, Jack's ghost dog, flew around us and into town square. Maybe Jack sent him to us to take us somewhere? We followed Zero into town square. Something didn't feel right. "Guys..." I started. "This town square...it feels empty."
There were no Halloween decorations, no dancing Heartless, nothing. Maybe it's only like that during Halloween. Something few across the sky. "It's Jack!" Sora gasped.
Jack Skellington was riding in a sled pulled by some reindeer made out of bones. He landed on a ramp by the square. "Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Sakura!" He cried happily. "Welcome back, and Merry Christmas!"
Huh? Christmas? Well, that explains why there are no Halloween decorations up. "So, it's not Halloween?" I asked.
"No, it isn't," Jack sighed. "But I, Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, has been tasked with running another show-but I need Sandy Claws blessing, so I'm off to see him in Christmas Town."
"'Sandy Claws'?" Sora asked.
"I think he means Santa Claus," Goofy mentioned.
"Aren't these decorations wonderful?" Jack bragged. "This year Halloween Town is going to handle Christmas too! But first, we have to visit Sally. She's working on something no self-respecting Santa Claus can do without. Come along-I'll show you!"
"A Halloween Town Christmas..." I muttered. Even though it was Christmas, most of the decorations still looked terrifying. "Let's go check it out."
"C'mon!" Jack waved us to follow him.
We followed Jack into the laboratory where Lock, Shock, and Barrel were "helping" Dr. Finkelstein. Sally was in the corner of the room working on something. Lock the devil, Shock the witch, and Barrel the skeleton threw an object into the table and it exploded. They laughed an ran off. Sally sighed. "You imbeciles!" Dr. Finkelstein shouted. "Now my experiment is ruined!"
Jack went up to Sally. "Sally! Did you finish it?" He asked joyfully. "I want to show it to my good friends."
"I'm sorry, Jack," she replied. "I...I need a bit more time."
"Ohh...well, that's all right," Jack slumped. "Just as long it's ready for Christmas!"
"But...Jack..." Sally started.
"I'd best be off," Jack turned to leave. "I have to go help Sandy Claws. Goodbye for now!"
Jack waved and left the lab. "Go get Santa Claus...?" Sora muttered, putting his gloved hand on his chin and getting into a thinking position.
"Please, Sora, Sakura," Sally begged. "I'm afraid something terrible will happen if Jack goes through with this."
"You can say that again!" Donald rolled his eyes.
Sora was in a daze. "Sora?" Goofy asked. I snapped my fingers in front of his face. What on Earth was that boy thinking about?
Jack reappeared, "Are those strange-looking fellows in the town square with you?"
"What do you mean 'fellows'?" Sora asked, snapping from his daze.
"You know, the ones that wanted to spoil Halloween AND Christmas?" Jack tapped his head, as if he was trying to remember something. "What do you call them again...Heartless?"
"They're definitely not with us," Sora replied. "But Donald, Goofy, Sakura, and I can get rid of them for you. And then we can go and see Santa!"
I smacked his head. "First, Heartless!" I shouted.
We left the laboratory where the mayor of Halloween Town was with a megaphone, yelling for the Heartless to stop and calling for help. Donald and Goofy, together, killed three of them. Sora and I summoned our Keyblade and got rid of the last two. "Well done!" Jack applauded for us. "You four are very powerful. Say, I need some assistants with me to be bodyguards for Sandy Claws. Care to take the job?"
"Yes!" Sora cheered.
I raised my eyebrow at him. Sora was acting very weirdly since we've been here. Jack let us out of town and into a forest. There was a tree with a Christmas tree painting on it. Jack grabbed a knob disguised as an ornament and twisted it open. The Christmas tree was actually a door and it opened. "Here is our ticket to Sandy Claws!" Jack smiled. "Step right up."
I hesitantly put my foot through the hole and found out there was a floor for me to step on. Instead, I fell right through it. At first, I was floating in nothing but space, but then I rocketed upwards and I popped out from another tree that looked exactly like the one Jack showed to us. Sora came out next and landed on top of me. Then Donald and Goofy landed on top of us. We were piled on top of each other. Jack appeared beside us. He laughed, "My, my, your outfits have changed! For a second there I thought you four were residents of Christmas Town!"
Huh? Our outfits changed?
I pushed Sora, Donald, and Goofy off of me. It was super cold where we were. I shivered and grabbed my arms. My breath was a cold, white fog. Shivering, I took a good look at them. Sora was dressed as Santa Claus, still retaining the dark, ashen physical appearance, boots, pants, and legs wrappings from his vampire costume. The rest of his clothing, however was different. Sora's mask is replaced by a large, black hat with a white fur rim and a puff ball on the tip, similar to Santa Claus's that is pulled over the right half of his face. He wore a black shirt with white fur lining, silver crown buttons lining the front, and a faded, brown belt with a silver buckle around his waist and over the shirt. His arms were unusually thin and have a slight brown tint to them. His gloves turn black and have white fur lining around the cuffs.
Donald was a snowman. He resembled a typical snowman, with a white body that seems to be made of two large balls of snow stacked on top of each other. Donald's arms seem to be made of branches, his tail is a small, red gardening trowel, and he has two coal "buttons" on his chest. His legs and head appear unchanged, and he wears red and white spats on his feet, a scarf with red and green stripes around his neck, and a blue shako in place of his usual hat.
Goofy was a reindeer. His clothing changes into a reddish-brown suit similar to the one worn by Santa Claus, with white fur lining around the sleeves. He wore a loose, red belt with a gold buckle around his waist and red mittens with green ribbons tied on them. Goofy's feet become light tan and have brown hooves, and a green wreath hangs from his neck. Goofy's nose glows orange, kinda like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from the Christmas books I read back in the bookstore on Destiny Islands when I was little. Two black, elegantly curled antlers sprout from the top of his head.
I, on the other hand, appeared to be a dark, female version of Santa Claus. My skin was still ashen grey, but my outfit was way different from my witch costume. I wore a simple black long-sleeved fleece dress with a white buttons going down the center of my dross white fleece trim at the end of the sleeves, at the end of my dress, black boots and a matching Santa hat with a white fleece ball at the tip of the hat as well as a white fleece trim at the base of the hat.
Jack lead us down the snowy hill. A little village was at the bottom. It was brightly lit with decorations and there was a little merry-go-round in the center. There in the center was a grand mansion. Jack opened the door and we went inside. Inside the house was cozy and warm, smelling of eggnog. Ugh. I hated that drink so much. I don't know how Kairi drinks it. Anyways, the wall design was kinda like Christmas wrapping paper and up just below the ceiling was garments made up of pine leaves and small ornaments. We arrived at the living room, which had a fire place. There, on a rocking chair, sat a plump, short, elderly man with a red suit and hat and black boots. The famous Santa Claus. He rocked on his chair, going over two lists, which I'm assuming were his "nice" and "naughty" lists.
Sora gawked at him. It was like he never heard if the guy before. And I'm getting the suspicion that it might be the case. "Why, hello everyone," Santa smiled. "Did you come to see if you're on my 'nice' list? Your name?"
Sora walked up to Santa. "Um, Sora, sir," he stuttered, as if he was a superstar.
"Let me see...Sora..." Santa skimmed both of his lists. I have to say, they were pretty long. He was at the top and both lists went on all the way to halfway across the living room. I'm going to have to assume that he kept a "nice" and "naughty" list for everyone in the universe, not just here in Halloween and Christmas town. "Here we are. Well, Sora, according to my list...seven years ago, you told everyone that you did not believe in Santa Claus...oh, that is unfortunate."
Sora smacked his hand on his face, as if he was punishing himself at how stupid he was back then. "How about Donald and Goofy? Donald cut in, moving on to him and Goofy. Santa glanced at his list before giving them a nod while smiling. "Oh boy!" Donald jumped with joy.
"Um...which list am I on?" I asked, raising my hand.
"Well, what's your name?" Santa asked.
"Sakura," I responded.
"Hmm..." Santa skimmed the ling lists in his hands once more. "It appears your on my 'nice' list, Sakura. Keep up the good work."
Jack approached all of us. "Am I on your list too, by an chance?" He asked. "It's me, Jack!"
"Jack Skellington?!" Santa cried.
Glass shattering was heard. Santa Claus hopped out of his chair and ran over to source the sound and we followed him. Santa opened the door which lead to a factory that he makes his toys from. Santa looked around, searching for any evidence that would source to what the sound was. Glass shattering was heard again. There, I saw Barrel jump through the hole in the broken window. "There!" I yelled, pointing to the shattered window.
Shock and Lock followed Barrel. Jack scrambled out of the factory and Sora, Donald, Goofy and I followed him. He burst out of Santa's house and ran up the hill. "Ja...ck...wait!!!" We panted.
Jack stopped and waited for us by the foot of the hill. "I'm not so sure how they got in..." he muttered.
"Oh, I'm pretty sure a huge Christmas tree on a tree is a huge giveaway..." I rolled my eyes.
"Someone must of revealed the location to them!"Jack pounded a fist into his hand.
"Jack, I'm pretty sure..." Sora started.
"We have to go and get them!" Jack yelled with determination. "I already ruined Halloween last year, and I'm not going to ruin Christmas this year!"
Jack threw open the Christmas tree door and jumped in. I went in after him. I was floating in dark space again before some sort of air sucked my downwards and I popped out of the tree we came from. This time, I landed on my feet. Sora, Donald, and Goofy came in after me. We were all in our Halloween costumes again. Jack caught sight of one of them and took off. Panting, we ran after him. "They're heading to Moonlight Hill!" Jack yelled at the sweaty, panting, and exhausted group who was desperately trying to keep up with them.
Once we reached Moonlight Hill, Lock, Shock, and Barrel we by a huge metal head with sharp claws Heartless with a small cage attached below with his with a chain. The three children jumped into the cage and shut it close.
The Heartless roared and began spinning around like crazy. His shape claws tore up most of Donald's costume and thankfully, not him. Donald shrieked, "My costume!"
"We'll fix it when this is over!" I yelled at him. The Heartless stopped spinning and I summoned my Keyblade. I jumped up and took a swing, landing a hard blow on the Heartless' head. It left no more than a dent on him. Sora casted Fire and set the Heartless on fire. It shrieked in pain as it began to spin around again, trying to put out the flames. Jack took a swipe at it and Goofy threw his shield at him. Sora casted Blizzard and Donald casted Areo.
The Heartless had enough of us and grabbed the cage. It turned it upside down and opened the cage door, opening its mouth. Lock fell down, screaming with fright. Shock and Barrel clung to the cage bars in a desperate attempt to stay put. But the Heartless shook the cage and the two children fell into its mouth. He let go of the cage and roared. He spun around again, only this time his claws were emitting green flames. We jumped back in order to avoid being burned. When it stopped spinning, it began shooting red and blue flames. I casted Reflect to act as a little barrier between us and becoming more toasted than roasted marshmallows.
Once the Heartless was done with its firey attack, we leapt back onto the Heartless and began attacking it once more. The Heartless then collapsed, turning into a puff of green smoke and the three children emerged.
"Ah ha ha ha!" Barrel giggled.
"They was fun!" Shock smiled.
"Can't wait to tell Mr. Oogie all about it!" Lock and the others turned and ran away.
"Oogie?!" Jack shouted, grabbing his head. I think that he was grabbing his hair if he had any.
"Wasn't he the one who tried to ruin Halloween?" Sora asked.
"Yes. I'm afraid that when he's around, we won't be relaxing and wrapping presents anytime soon..." Jack grumbled.
Jack, Sora, Donald, Goofy, and I left Moonlight Hill and entered a graveyard. Sally dashed right towards Jack, "Jack!" She panted. "Bad news! Sandy Claws has been kidnapped!"
"Oh my!" Jack gasped. I groaned. That was quick for a villain who just came back.
"And he's headed for Christmas Town!" Sally added.
"We must hurry back to Christmas Town!" Jack yelled.
"No more running please," Sora begged. "I'm getting the cramps."
No one listened to Sora's whining as we all bolted right back to the forest and t the tree with the Christmas Tree door. Jack threw open the door and we wasted no time diving into the tree. I was floating in dark space again before some sort of air sucked my downwards and I popped out of the tree we came from.
As we approached the hilltop overlooking Christmas Town, we saw smoke coming out of Santa's home. "That's Santa's house!" Donald cried.
Wasting no more time, we bolted down the hill, bursting into Santa's house to find no one inside. We made our way to the factory and drew our weapons, looking around to see where Oogie was. I saw the familiar top half of a spinner hanging on the wall above the factory machines, but nothing out of place.
There was the sound of maniacal laughter and we turned to see Oogie laughing as he stood above us on a factory machine. Sally had just entered the room and Oogie jumped down to grab her and return to her position. "Jack Skellington!" Oogie grinned.
"Oogie!" Jack gasped.
"We have a scare to settle, Jack!" Oogie smirked. "Same goes for your little sidekicks!"
"What are you planning to do with Sandy Claws?" Jack demanded.
"Who?" Oogie scratched his head in a mocking manner. "Sandy Claws? I don't know what you're talking about!" Oogie hopped off from the top of a factory machine and stood on a conveyor belt, staring down at a bound and squirming Santa. "And why is this roly-poly red guy here?' He sneered. "Time to go, grandpa!"
Oogie heaved Santa up and stood in front of a machine with a dark hole where the conveyor belt was attached to and laughed as Santa shook his head, pleading to not be pushed inside. Whatever was inside that machine must not be pretty.
Something flew in and landed in front of them. "Eh?" Oogie asked, pausing his laughter as he stared at what was just thrown at him. It appeared to be a torn off blue leg of a doll.
As he stared at the leg in fascination, Santa wriggled his way out of Oogie's grasp and stumbled his way over to the one-legged Sally. "Mr. Santa Claus!" She called as she waved him over.
Oogie growled as he chased after Santa until we stood in his way. "Why, you..." He growled.
He then turned and ran on the conveyor belt and into the dark hole, appearing above us on a glass platform as he snickered and pressed a button. The conveyor belt started, moving us backwards from where Oogie was. We turned behind us and saw a matching machine with a dark hole that Oogie ran inside, only instead the dark hole was filled with spikes. We tried scrambling off the conveyor belt but an invisible force field stopped us from getting off. Having no choice but to jog towards Oogie to avoid meeting an untimely end by spikes, Donald sprinted ahead and towards Oogie. "Stop!'" He shouted.
The dark hole Oogie ran through was outlined in blue and when Donald ran through it, he teleported to the other conveyor belt beside us that was outlined in blue. "Huh?" Donald looked around with confusion as he ran through the hole he came out of from and ended back up where he started. "Not again?" He groaned.
Presents started coming out of the dark hole and Sora swiped at one, sending it high up and onto Oodie's glass platform, cracking it slightly. Everyone glanced at each other and gave a knowing nod before we began to knock presents up to Oogie. He threw explosives the shape of dices at us and sent a pole with a giant boxing glove attached came out and began punching the conveyor belt, trying to squish us, but we rolled away as soon as we saw the shadow looming over us.
Oogie's glass platform shattered and he screamed as he fell down with the presents tumbling with him. We wasted no time getting our hits on him before he got up and scrambled back into the dark hole, coming down again on another glass platform but above another conveyor belt. Along the way, he sped up the conveyor belt, bringing us swiftly to the spikes on the other end but we sprinted forward to avoid getting impaled.
Sora and I waited until the outline of the hole we stood in front of turned blue along with the dark hole by the conveyor belt Oogie stood above by and we jumped in, teleporting us to the conveyor belt where Oogie was. Oogie sent bolts of lightning that went down the conveyor belt but we dodged pass them and the boxing glove as we continued to knock presents up at Oogie. Gift bags started appearing and when Jack hit one, the paper was torn to shreds and a Heartless appeared. I took it out quickly as Sora knocked another present to Oogie causing the platform to break and bringing Oogie down to us once more.
It seemed falling from high above the seconds time did it as Oogie stood up, shaking from all the injuries we inflicted on him. Bugs began to pour out from his side and when Oogie noticed that and the hole that was torn in the seams of his body bag, he gasped as he covered that hole, causing another one to rip on his other side and for more bugs to pour out of that one. Realizing that his attempgs to patch the two holes was futile, Oogie wailed as he collapsed, the bugs escaping his body and leaving nothing but an empty sack behind.
A cockroach scrambled away but Donald stomped on it, killing it indicated by the squishing sound and Sora sighed with relief.
*~*~*~*~~*
"Christmas is now safe!" Sora stretched as we were outside Santa's house.
"Perfect!" Jack smiled as he came out of Santa's house. "I'd better get down to business!"
"Leave that to Santa!" Donald cried.
"Yup, you oughta stick to Halloween and spooky stuff!" Goofy nodded with agreement.
"Jack?" Sally called. Jack turned around to see Sally coming out of Santa's house with some folded red outfits in her arms. "Here, it'd done," she gave him the folded clothes.
"Wonderful!" Jack threw his arms in the air with excitement. "Why, I love it! Thank you, Sally!"
"Jack...do you really have to do this?" Sally asked.
"But I'd make a splendid Sandy Claws!" Jack insisted as he took the clothes from Sally's hands and put them other his current outfit. Once he was done, he twirled around in it.
Santa exited his house. "Listen here, Jack Skellington," he said. "You saved me, and Christmas as well. And for that, I'm very grateful. But please promise you won't cause any more trouble! And about that suit! Don't even think about taking over for me again!
"I just thought you could use a little help this year, Mr. Claws," Jack explained. "You must be exhausted from all the preparations. And-I wouldn't mind a second chance to get this Christmas thing right.
"Yes, that is true," Santa said. "I could use a break, but the happy looks on the children's faces as they open the presents on Christmas morning makes it all worth it year after year after year after year. You, Jack, love making kids scream and shiver. How would you like it if all that was taken away from you? Jack, my point here is that I specialize in Christmas, and you specialize in Halloween. Though I appreciate your help and enthusiasm, we should stick with our talents. After all, you are Jack Skellington! The Pumpkin King! The Knight of Terror!"
"You're...you're right, Sandy Claws!" Jack said as he hugged himself. "I am the Master of Terror!"
"Despite that, I am most welcome to your visits any time, Santa assured.
"Oh, thank you! Thank you!" Jack thanked Santa.
"Jaaack!" A whiny voice called. It was the mayor. "There is a mess back in Halloween Town and blah blah blah..." Suddenly, Jack began to glow, "Jack, if this is one of your tricks again, it's not funny!" The mayor grouched.
"It's not!" Jack lifted his arms and examined himself, trying to figure out why he was like that. Suddenly he floated into the air. A giant glowing crown appeared below Sora and I. We know the drill. We lifted our Keyblades and we were transported into another dimension. There was a floating Jack. We pointed our Keyblades at him and two beams of light shot out, hitting him. I was pulled into my usual trance. I saw a giant weaving with colorful and dark threads woven in it. I pointed my Keyblade at it and the dark weaving began to weave out. In its place, was new, colorful thread. Once the weaving was complete. I was pulled out of my trance.
Jack and the mayor was gone. It was just Sora, Donald, Goofy, Santa, and I. "We better get going," I shivered. "It's freezing."
Donald and Goofy nodded as they left to prepare the ship. We were about to follow him but Santa stopped us. "Wait," he said, "I believe the one who told you I didn't exist was Riku, right?"
"It was..." Sora replied with downcast eyes. "Wait, do you know where he is?!"
"I wish," Santa sighed. "But no. Sora, remember this; keep believing in Riku and you will find him, just like you believed in me and you found me."
"Right," Sora nodded as he gave Santa one last thumbs up and we turned and left to the Gummi Ship.
