Chapter 7 - Couples Night Part 1
Back at London Boardwalk, Jada was just chillin in her apartment, watching some flicks on Netflix, and snacking on some Takis. Then she heard a loud knock at her door. But she didn't wanna get up.
"Ugh, who is it?"
"Guess who sis!"
She recognized that voice anywhere and was even more reluctant to open the door. But she muttered "Whatever" and walked her way up. She opened it, and LaQuinta barged in.
"Damn girl, you almost knocked me over," Jada told her.
"Sorry boo," LaQuinta said, "But I'm just so happy, I mean thank you for helpin' me out, like really, thank you."
"I mean, you welcome, I guess," she said, "It's what I do."
"But I just can't leave you hangin' though. I gotta show my appreciation."
"No, really, it's fine."
But LaQuinta was persistent and grabbed Jada by the arm.
"Look, girl, you've done a lot for me, and I wanna do somethin' for you. Let's get some ice cream or somethin'. Everything's on me, sis".
Jada looked back at her Netflix but didn't want to let LaQuinta down like that.
"Alright, I'mma go with ya, but...."
Before Jada could finish her sentence, LaQuinta jumped up and gave her a giant hug.
"We bout to have a good time, girl, believe me!"
Elsewhere, at the Free Hotel, Monica and Thomas crept up to a larger than life sign. It was all pink, with a crazy looking white guy, and on the bottom, there were black letters that read, "Think you got what it takes? Then meet me in Room 28".
"Sounds like The Bachelor or somethin'," Monica said.
"I don't know," Thomas added, "It could be a game or something. Let's find out".
"Man, I don't trust this," Monica said, "I feel kinda weird about it. I mean, look at the dude's face, his eyes are all backward and jumbled up".
"Come on. It just looks like dude is having fun."
"That's not a funny look! He looks like the damn Joker! He's probably involved in some shady kind of business."
"Don't worry about all that," Thomas said, "All you gotta do is chill and follow me. If the dude turns out to be some monster or villain or shady underworld lord, we'll leave"
"I hope so."
They headed to Room 28 and stepped into a small but festive little room. The walls were all pink, with flashing lights decorating them, and circus music played. A single blue chair was in the middle of the floor, and behind it were three curtains. The crazy looking white man from the sign walked out from the bathroom and spotted Monica and Thomas.
"Well, look what we have here, coffee and cream, how the hell are you guys doing?". He had one of those TV presenter voices, but with a bit of a country twang.
"We're doing great," Thomas said.
"Speak for yourself," Monica snarked.
"Well anyway, I'm doing a pilot for this game show, just asking couples trivia question and offering big prizes. Jet ski, SeaWorld, Resorts, you name it, I got it! Are you guys in?"
Thomas looked at him for a second with his mouth agape.
"Jet Skis and Resorts? Hell yeah, I'm in".
Monica folded her arms and said, "I guess I'm in."
"That's spectacular, just sign this waiver and you're all set to go!"
Thomas reached in his pocket and came up empty-handed.
"Aw man, I don't have a pen, baby, you got one?"
Monica didn't even say a word. She just slapped the pen in his hand.
"Thanks, you're the best." Thomas kissed her in the cheek, but as he signed the waiver, she had her head in her hands.
Down the street, LaQuinta skipped out of the apartments with Jada and was looking down the road.
"Damn, one of my exes must've got my ride again, we might need to jack somebody."
Jada said, "I mean, the shop is just two blocks away. We could walk."
"Hell no," LaQuinta said, "Walking is for basic chicks, we're high, now help me look for the flyest ride in this parking lot."
Sure enough, they scoped the parking lot for some cars, and sure enough, a 2018 Red Range Rover caught her eye.
"Hell yeah, let's get that one."
Jada swallowed spit as LaQuinta dug through her purse to get her hanger. But as she scrambled, she found nothing but crushed up candy, chips, and a remote control drone. But at the bottom of it all, she finally found her hanger. Sure enough, in five seconds, it was unlocked. They hopped in the ride and were taken aback from the interior. The seats had a shiny leather coat with dark black colors. A light brown stripe ran through it all. The rest of the car, including the wheel and the radio, followed the same pattern.
"We chose a real good one baby," LaQuinta said.
Jada shook her head. "I mean, yeah, it looks nice."
"Nice?" Damn, this whip ain't just nice, hell, it's exquisite. Now let's ride".
She swerved swiftly out the parking lot and dashed out. Once she hit the road, she turned and looked at Jada.
"Let's turn on some music, what kinda stuff you listen to?"
"Hell, I listen to almost anything, it don't really matter."
"I'mma just let you know, I don't pay that soft R&B crap, we play that hard stuff in here."
As they rode on down to the Ice Cream parlor, she blasted the fierce sounds of Nirvana's "Negative Creep" all the way down.
While they were cruisin' down the street, Monica and Thomas were sitting on the bench behind the curtains of Room 28. He had this dumb little smile on his face, while Monica's eyes were low as the ground. She looked at her surroundings and softly tapped her foot.
"You okay?" He asked her. "You seem a little...on edge."
Monica turned her head with the quickness.
"You damn right I'm on edge, look at this place!"
Thomas leaned back a little and stretched his hands a bit.
"Whoa baby, I know this place is a little strange, but you need to calm down..."
"Did your pasty self just tell me to calm down?"
Monica stopped him right his tracks. Thomas' was stuck looking like he had just seen a ghost.
"Well, no, I mean, yes, but, you see...
"I'mma cut you off right there," She took a single finger slapped it on his lips.
"You never, and I mean never, tell a black woman to calm down."
"What happens if I do?" he asked in a curious, but shaky, tone. Monica shook her head with a sly little grin
"Trust me. You don't wanna see."
"Is it really that bad?"
"You'll see..."
The man in the pink grabbed two bottles of water and walked on over to the curtains to give them to this "cream and coffee" couple. However, once he pulled the curtains back, he dropped everything.
"Oh my..."
Monica was spanking Thomas with a heel like a kid who just stole something. He flopped around on the ground like a fish and perked up with every hit. While whooping him, she told him, "Don't! Ever! Tell! Me! Calm! Down!". She pushed him on the ground and called him a "Pasty little peasant". The man in pink picked his collar.
"I guess I'll give y'all a minute," he said. He closed the curtain and didn't look back.
Meanwhile, in the streets of Cookie Ranch, LaQuinta was barely driving as she tried to mimic the guitar notes from Negative Creep and yell along...
"I'M A NEGATIVE CREEP, I'M A NEGATIVE CREEP!"
She let down the window and unleashed a "WOOO!!!" that scared a man walking down the street. Jada tried to front like she wasn't worried, but her tapping fingers on her lap. She saw the Ice Cream Shop right outside, and let out a sigh of relief. But LaQuinta rolled right past it.
"Uh, you passed by the shop," Jada told her.
But LaQuinta laughed with her mouth in her hand. Then she said, "Girl, we ain't going to that lil' kiddie place. I'mma take you to a real ice cream shop."
She pulled over in front of a light brown and wooden porta potty. Jada shot a confused look.
"Wait, what the hell is this?"
"I'll show you, girl, come on!"
Jada walked out of the car with her, but couldn't stop looking around. LaQuinta took notice.
"You scared?"
"Not really, just curious."
"Don't even worry, I got you. Now take a breath and stop worrying about everything".
Jada followed LaQuinta into that brown abyss. However, she had to pause when she saw her walk down the toilet.
"Oh no, I ain't gon walk in a damn toilet now." Jada looked at her in disbelief.
"You trippin, ain't no mess in here, just stairs, now come on!"
She paused for a second, then she walked down. Jada shook her head and said to herself, "I should've stayed home."
LaQuinta rushed down the stairs while Jada just did a slow little trot. Before they even came in the room, a cloud of hazy blue smoke met their faces. Blaring through the speakers were trap hits, but remixed into ghetto techno. LaQuinta started nodding her head.
"Hell yeah, I'm feelin' this"
At the end of the steps was a vast, semi-dark room with ten tables spread across. Each had a complimentary water bottle and a bowl of mints and candy. Facing them was a vast and empty stage, with blue lights spinning above. On the opposite side was a bar with two sections of almost every brand of alcohol that you could imagine. In the middle was a silver ice cream machine that hummed like a hummingbird. Behind it, all was a dark-skinned woman with a rainbow afro and a red bathing suit with green flowers. She stared at them like they committed a crime.
"Y'all better be lucky, I was just about to close this whole place up."
LaQuinta bounced back with, "Girl you ain't closing nothin', now hook us up with the special"
She trotted to the Ice Cream machine with a bowl and blended every last flavor. Then she threw some gummy bears in it, along with some cinnamon butter. Finally, she got some waffle cones, poured a little bit of grape at the bottom of them, and scooped the ice cream in it. But before she could pass it to Jada and LaQuinta, she put the final touch: dark chocolate sprinkles.
"Hope y'all enjoy it," she told them, then she eyed LaQuinta with a stern look. "And don't cheap out on the tips, I know you rich."
LaQuinta rolled her eyes and pointed at her.
"Jackie, you should know, I don't let people know my cash flow." But before she could even take a sip, she stopped her in her tracks.
"Wait a minute. I ain't lettin' you drink a damn thing until you pay me."
LaQuinta rolled her eyes and looked her with disgust. "Ugh, fine, here's my card."
"That's for both of y'all, right?"
"Hell yeah, I don't let my homegirls pay for nothin'."
"But apparently you're too cheap to give a good damn tip."
"Girl shut up and swipe my damn card."
Jackie smiled and snatched her card. Once she swiped it, her and Jada sat back and enjoyed their drinks.
