The next few days at school did turn out a bit better than the first day. I was still avoiding Michael. I did feel terrible ignoring him, but he hadn’t even apologised to me. I did however, see Matthew in my Biology class. He sat on the desk next to me and we talked briefly through our practical work. I was beginning to warm up to Matthew. He always had a cheeky smile on his face and he could always made me laugh. When I did see Michael out in the court yard on our lunch break, he only watched me and Matthew talk. I don’t see what they have against each other. They’re both great guys, why couldn’t they just get along?

A few times, Matthew and I bumped into each other in the hall. When our skin made contact, I felt a sort of soft zap. My heart thumped in my ears and I stared at him like a love sick puppy, desperately trying not to blush. That’s when I realised, I have a crush on Matthew Kyles. I can’t believe it. A few days ago I was scared of him and wanted to be nowhere near him. Now, I wanted to be near him but I still feel… scared of him. I don’t know why.

Third period was cooking class. Both Matthew and Michael are in this class with me. Michael approached me just after the bell came and everyone was coming in.

“Hey April. I’m sorry for the way I’ve been acting. Are we okay?” he smiled.

“Sure” I smiled back.

Suddenly an arm slung over my shoulder, scaring the living daylights out of me. When I looked to see who it was, Matthew was smiling at me.

“Hiya April, what’s up? See me now Angel boy?”

Michael bit his lip. “Yes.”

I looked up at Matthew, “What do you mean by Angel boy?”

Matthew looked at Michael then back at me, smiling and winked. “It’s a secret Hun. So I was thinking after school we could go to Lillipa Lake?”

I looked back at Michael who had tensed up as soon as Matthew said that.

“I actually need to talk with April alone if you don’t mind” Michael said grabbing my arm and pulling me off to the other side of the classroom.

“Please tell me you’re not thinking of going” his expression was pained.

“I can do whatever I want to do Michael and with anyone I want. I wish you wouldn’t be so jealous.”

He looked at me with a blank expression then laughed.

“Me jealous of that?” he gestured to Matthew who was sitting on top of my desk waiting patiently.

“I don’t think so April. But please, just don’t go with him okay?”

I sighed frustrated.

“Michael I can go if I want to. You can’t tell me what to do. I don’t know what your problem is but you should get over it! Matthew happens to be a really nice guy and you should give him a chance.”

Michael again looked at me with a blank expression, and then it hardened.

“I’m not asking you, I’m telling you April.”

I was shocked about how rude he was being. I couldn’t even talk to him right now. I walked back over to Matthew.

“Sure. Lake after school sounds good.” I said smiling and glanced a look over my shoulder to Michael who was still brooding in the corner.
