That Night || Lennon

TRIGGER WARNING!
DO NOT READ UNTIL YOU HAVE READ UP TO CHAPTER 30 OF REVEALING LENNON.

Shae was very persistent when it came to my social life and Eloise just went along happily. If it wasn’t for her I’d probably have my nose stuck in a book twenty four seven. Tonight we were going to a party at some jocks house that she had a crush on. I was just going along for the ride, there really weren’t any boys that I was interested in, but I’d heard that someone on the football team liked me and I was so ready for a relationship.

“Honey, are you almost ready?” Mom shouted up the stairs at me. She was driving me to Shae’s and then we were going to walk to the party.

I put the finishing touches on my makeup and looked down at my outfit feeling satisfied. I was wearing a pencil skirt and a cute flowery crop top with shoulder cut outs. I slipped on my black converse.

“Yeah!” I called down and grabbed my phone off my night stand before racing down the stairs.

“You look very pretty Lenny.” She complimented and I nodded in agreement. “Remember your father and I have his work dinner tonight so we won’t be home until after midnight. Rebecca is here looking after your sister and brother.”

“Okay, I’ll probably sleep over at Shae’s tonight anyway.” I told her, raring to go.

“Gabriel, we have to go!” My Mom shouted for my Dad this time.

“I’m right here.” He emerged from the kitchen, fixing his tie. “Where are we dropping you off again?” He asked.

“Shae’s.” I smiled and opened the front door to reveal a setting sun.

My Dad unlocked the car and I hopped into the back seat. “Can we listen to Virgin Radio?” I asked and he rolled his eyes.

“You know what I think of that music…” He warned.

“I know, crap.” It was a joke he always made. Crap, c-rap. It was funny at first, now it was just old, like him. Instead he turned on his favourite station, that only played classic rock. It was my turn to roll my eyes.

I sat back, getting comfortable. My Dad could make a ten minute drive feel very, very long. He pulled up in front of Shae’s driveway and they both turned to look at me.

“Have fun sweetie!” My Mom said as I opened the car door.

“Thanks.” I mumbled and watched them drive away. I ran up the stairs and knocked twice on the front door. It immediately opened. Her hair and makeup were already done but all she was wearing was a pink fuzzy robe.

“Lennon, thank god you’re here, I need help choosing my outfit.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me into her room. “What do you like better?” Shae pointed to the two outfits laid out on her bed. “Sexy or gaudy?”

The gaudy outfit was still sexy but not as sexy as the sexy outfit.

“I think gaudy.” I told her and she quickly flung her robe to the side to reveal her matching underwear.

“Good, me too!” She said getting dressed into the shinny gold dress.

“Where’s Eloise?”

“She’s on her way here.” She looked at the outfit in the mirror. “Looks better on than I thought.” She smiled.

“Hey guys!” Eloise walked in, holding a bottle of vodka and showing off how good she looked in a crop top. “Look what I got!”

“Oh la la.” Shae cooed. I gulped, I’d never drank more than a cooler before, let alone hard alcohol. She looked at her phone, checking the time. “We better get walking!” It was quarter after nine and the party was about a fifteen minute walk.

“I’m so excited!” Eloise danced.

“Me too!” I jumped up. “Party here we come!”

We laughed the whole way there, in high anticipation for what the night would bring. I hoped magically I’d end up with a boyfriend by the end of the night and I wanted the same for Shae and Eloise.

By the time we got there the party was already in full swing. I could hear the music from the end of the driveway. The big, extravagant house almost looked like it was shaking. Two guys holding a keg ran up the driveway ahead of us.

“Shae!” Someone called from behind. I turned around to see Caleb Peters. He was the one who Shae had a crush on. “Ladies.” He said and wrapped his arm around Shae’s waist. “Come on.” Caleb pulled Shae into the house and I was left with Eloise.

Stepping inside was like being hit with a brick of sound. The music was three times louder than it was outside and people were yelling along with it. I could barely hear myself think. It felt hot and sticky. People were dancing, grinding against each other. It was uncomfortable to watch. I looked around, trying to figure out what to do next. Join in? Get a drink?

“El-“ I spun around, but Eloise was gone. I was alone. I thought about leaving but I decided against it. I’m here, I might as well enjoy it, plus maybe I’ll find that guy. I sighed and headed into the house, moving through the sweaty bodies.

I need a drink, I thought to myself and tried my best to find the kitchen. Before I could get there someone handed me a drink in a red solo cup. I took it.

“Thanks!” I said, to the crowd and took a sip. It was just what I needed. I could hardly taste the alcohol.

“Lennon!” I heard my name being called and looked around the room for the person who called it. “Lennon!” It was Shane, a guy on the football team. I played with my hair and put a flirty smile on my face. Maybe it’s him. “Just who I was looking for. You’re in my chemistry class, can I borrow your notes for the test on Wednesday?” He asked and I frowned.

“Uh, yeah sure. Get them from me on Monday.” I told him and he disappeared back into the crowd.

I turned around and finished off my drink, thinking about how I was going to be alone forever. At least at the rate my love life was going. I set down the cup on the edge of the half wall and scanned the crowd for Eloise and Shae. They were nowhere in sight.

“You look like you’re having fun.” Someone said behind me. Bradley.

“I hope that was a sarcastic comment.” I told him, starting to feel the alcohol kick in.

“It was, you look lonely. Come on, hang with me.” He offered, gesturing towards a group of guys dancing in the corner.

“Do you even know who I am?” I said, my voice slurring.

“Yeah, of course I know who you are Lennon.” He assured me, holding out his hand. I stumbled forward and he caught me. “Are you alright?” The room started to spin.

“I- I don’t feel good.” I tried to collect myself, but I couldn’t. I just had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

“I can take you home.” He held me up and made me look him in the eyes. I couldn’t focus, I couldn’t even answer. I just nodded. Yes, take me home, please take me home. I could barely feel my feet beneath me, but I knew that I was walking. I didn’t know where I was going. Everything just kept spinning. I was stuck in a haze.

Suddenly I wasn’t walking anymore, but I was still moving. You’re in a car Lennon. I told myself.

“Where are we going?” I meant to ask, but instead it came out as slurred gibberish.

We parked, and deep down I knew I wasn’t anywhere close to home. I felt pressure on my hips. Bradley was sitting on top of me. Things got slightly clearer, but I was defenseless.

“So beautiful…” His voice echoed in my ears. I felt tingling on my cheek. I knew it was his fingers. I want to go home. His lips crashed down on mine. I tried to squirm out of his grasp, hit him, kick him, whatever would get him off of me, but nothing worked. It was like there was a miscommunication between my brain and my limbs and all I wanted to do was scream, because I knew the road I was headed down. “I want you.” His voice was slick with lust.

His hand reached up my skirt and he slipped my panties down off my legs. Panic rose inside me, shaking, sweating, I just wanted to escape. No, no, no…

“Make me feel good baby.” He slithered, wedging himself between my legs. Something pulsated against my thigh. I didn’t realize what it was right away, not until he unzipped his jeans.

Holes formed in my vision. No, stay awake… I fought it. I had to get out of there. No…

And then everything went dark.

--

My eyes fluttered open, but I didn’t see what I expected to see. I didn’t see my purple walls, or my white ceiling, instead I saw a sky, filled with clouds, and trees. Underneath my fingertips was grass, damp blades of grass. For a minute I thought I was still dreaming and then it came back to me. Eloise, Shae and I went to a party and then… events began to get fuzzy. How did I get here? Did I get drunk?

I sat up. Every bone in my body ached. I was still in my clothes from the night before, although something felt like it was missing. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I rubbed my head and saw my phone lying two feet away. I went to get up and grab my phone when I realized what was missing. My underwear.

My throat went dry. Everything came rushing back. I felt sick and Bradley offered to drive me home. He took advantage of me, he raped me. I put the events together in my head. Was that what happened? I didn’t know for sure. I thought maybe I was jumping to conclusions. I doubted it ever even happened. It felt like a story I made up to make myself feel better about getting drunk and winding up in the middle of the park. But who would make that up?

My hands were trembling as I picked up my phone. I had so many new messages. I scrolled through them. Most were from Eloise and Shae.

Where are you?

We’re worried.

Did you go home?

Did you meet up with that guy?

I guess if you’re not answering then you’re probably doing the nasty.

We’ll cover for you with your Mom.

Call us in the morning.

You better tell us everything about your first time.

In between was a message from an unknown number.

Thanks for last night xx

A bile rose in my throat and I dry heaved onto the grass.

No, nothing happened. I shook my head.

I wrapped my arms around my shivering body and looked around, trying to figure out how to get home. When I figured that out I began to walk home. You’re okay, nothing happened. I wiped my tears away.
