Chapter 18: Death
Legolas had know that orcs were following them for days now. He hadn't said anything earlier because they hadn't been close enough to threaten them, but now the orcs were gaining and they needed to move.
Boromir helped Faramir to his feet and Legolas ushered Eowyn in front of him. He paused for a moment as Boromir and Faramir passed him.
He closed his eyes as he felt exhaustion threatening to take him. He wouldn't have given some of his light to Faramir unless he had a good reason.
He shook off the exhaustion and ran after the others. His strength was failing him and he knew it, he had given most of his light in his futile attempt to save Pippin. What he had given Faramir would keep him alive and give him enough strength to outrun the orcs.
Legolas looked ahead. Menacing, black mountains loomed in the distance, they were almost there. He heard the sound of wargs growling and the shouts of orcs behind them.
Legolas turned around and counted five warg riders, each one armed with bows and spears.
Legolas ran behind the others, they heard them too. Eowyn tripped and fell onto the ground. Faramir was about to help when Legolas shouted, "Keep going!"
Faramir hesitated but then followed Boromir. Legolas helped Eowyn to her feet and continued running.
They were nearing the mountains but Legolas knew that they would never reach them before the wargs caught up to them.
He spotted some rocks nearby and ordered the others to run to them. As they ran over Eowyn noticed that Legolas wasn't following.
"Legolas!"
"Go! Stay with them."
Eowyn hesitated and was grabbed by Faramir who dragged her over to the rocks. Legolas ran the opposite direction and climbed onto a large boulder and looked down at the warg riders.
It didn't take long for one of them to spot the elf. The wargs raced towards him, he leapt off of the boulder and ran.
He could hear their growls behind him. They were getting closer and closer. He wouldn't be able to outrun them for long. Legolas slowed his pace and let them catch up. They surrounded him and lowered their spears.
One of the tips was right in front of his face while another barely scraped his shoulder and another was pressed lightly into his back.
"Thought you could escape didn't you elf scum?"
The orcs jeered and gloated over their easy catch. Legolas remained silent and eyed the spear in front of his face.
"We know your other friends are here. Tell us where they are and I promise you won't suffer, much."
The orcs waited for Legolas to respond but the elf said nothing. Suddenly he grabbed the spear in front of him and yanked it from the orc's hands. He used it to block another spear that was thrust at him.
They'll take you dead or alive
The words rang through Legolas' ears. He would never go back to that forsaken place, neither dead nor alive.
He knocked a spear out of an orc's hand and stabbed the warg it sat on in the throat. He whipped around and blocked another spear and then stabbed another warg in the eye.
He dodged one of the wargs that was about to grab him in it's jaws and stabbed it in the heart. Three wargs were dead. There were two left and there were five orcs.
He ran from the orcs and leapt onto another boulder. He jumped onto another warg and killed the rider. He spun around and stabbed the warg in the head.
One warg. Four orcs.
He leapt of and watched as the last warg came towards him, it trampled one of the orcs who hadn't been able to move in time. Legolas gripped the spear tightly and then threw it as hard as he could at the warg. It hit the beast in throat and it fell, crushing it's rider.
Legolas paused. Silence hung in the air.
Five dead wargs. Two missing orcs.
He looked around for the two orcs. Where were they?
He tensed. Something was wrong. He turned around and watched as the two orcs came up behind him, they had Eowyn.
"Stand down elf!" One of the orcs shouted. It pressed its blade against Eowyn's neck.
"Or she dies."
Eowyn's eyes were wide with fear, blood began to trickle down her neck. He didn't know what to do. Where was Boromir? And Faramir?
Legolas glared at the orcs and walked forward slowly. One of them had his sword out and began walking towards Legolas.
Legolad stood still as the orc grabbed his arm and threw him to the ground, kicking the elf in the stomach.
Eowyn watched helplessly as the orc continued to beat him. He wasn't fighting back, beause of her.
Legolas never cried out. He remained silent as the orc beat him. Eowyn almost believed that he was dead.
Suddenly he shot up and grabbed the orc's sword. He yanked it from his hands and threw it at the orc that had Eowyn. Before it could react if fell dead.
The orc behind Legolas attacked him with a small dagger. Legolas grabbed the orc's wrist and held off the dagger while the orc grabbed Legolas' arm and twisted it painfully behind his back.
Eowyn grabbed the sword and ran towards the fight. Before she could reach them the orc threw Legolas down. The elf immediately saw what was about to happen. He tried to move but it was too late, the orc threw the dagger and it struck Eowyn in the stomach.
She gasped and dropped the sword. She placed her hand over the hilt of the dagger and felt the blood that began to spill from the wound. She looked at Legolas, her blue eyes filled with pain and fear. Without breaking his gaze she stumbled to the ground.

Legolas watched her fall.
He saw the blood pouring from her stomach.
He turned slowly to face the orc.
He no longer felt the pain in his arm.
His lip was bleeding and his head throbbed but he ignored all of it.
He stood to his feet and ran towards the orc, who drew it's bow and was about to shoot.
Legolas was blind with fury.
His eyes blazed with white fire.
He crashed into the orc and tackled it to the ground.
He grabbed its head between his hands and snapped its neck.
He stood over the orc and kicked it.
Then he raced over to Eowyn's side.

She was dying. They both knew it. He knelt beside her and took her hand, she stared up at him with tears in her eyes.
"Legolas..."
"I'm here."
She reached around her neck took off the evenstar pendant. She placed it in one of his hands.
"Once you reach the desert, go north... Towards the mountains."
Legolas looked down at the pendant and then at Eowyn. His eyes filled with grief.
Tears ran down Eowyn's eyes as she finished.
"Tell... Aragorn... That I love him. Tell him..."
She gasped and closed her eyes. Legolas gripped her hand tighter.
"Tell him I'm sorry... For leaving them..."
Legolas silenced her.
"Do not speak anymore. Sleep now."
Eowyn's body shuddered, she took in one last breath and was still. Her eyes remained opened but were now grey.
Legolas gently closed them and let go of her hand. He fought the tears that threatened to fall from his eyes.
He looked down at the pendant in his hand. It had been Arwen's, then Aragorn's, and finally Eowyn's. It was a reminder of his friends, the ones he had lost.
Legolas looked over at the mountains.
Once you reach the desert, go north towards the mountains.
What had she meant? That had been his plan from the beginning. He sighed and fought off the grief that was about to overcome him.
Sauron wouldn't have just sent five warg riders after him. They had to keep moving. He paused, where was Boromir?
He looked down at Eowyn one last time.
May you find peace in death
He turned away and ran back to where he had left the others.
