Chapter 17- Plans Thwarted

Jake turned around, only to see Liz standing in the doorway.

"No it's not me. It's some other random dude who decided to carry Emma into her bedroom as if she was his girlfriend. Definitely not me!" he answered sarcastically.

Liz laughed, "I was just checking on Emma. She barely spent any time in school yesterday. Plus, it's a Saturday and she still hasn't woken up or gone to her parents' house for the weekend."

Jake shook his head, "I don't think she's going this weekend. She's really exhausted after finding all the materials yesterday. And we may or may not have gotten attacked."

Liz frowned, "Is she okay? Oh my gods! Is that a bandage on her neck? What happened?!" She rushed over to the other side of the bed and parted Emma's hair to reveal the stained bandage.

Jake's face warmed slightly as he recalled his confession from the day before. "It wasn't anything too big. The Samurai just attacked us. But don't worry, we defeated them."

Liz gave him a pointed look, "You better have. I'm going to go get some breakfast. You take care of her. I think she has a fever."

Jake debated on whether or not to ask her about Ivan, but Liz had soon left. With a worried expression on his face, he placed his hand on Emma's forehead in search of a fever. Sure enough, it was warmer than usual. Cursing under his breath, he contemplated on what to do. After a moment, he decided to go get her an Advil from his dorm and call her parents.

Once he retrieved an Advil from his dorm and went back to her room, he slightly shook her shoulder.

"Emma," he whispered in her ear, "Come on. Get up. You have a really bad fever and I need you to take this Advil..."

Emma groggily rubbed her eyes and attempted to sit up. "Jake," she murmured. "Is that you?"

Jake laughed, "Wow you and Liz are really similar. Yes, it's me. How are you feeling?"

"Awful," she admitted. "When did you talk to Liz? And would you like for me to take that Advil?"

Jake handed her the Advil and filled her in.

"Really? No wonder I feel so terrible!" she realized. "Did you ask Liz about her and Ivan?"

Jake shook his head. "I didn't think it was my place to ask her. But, I don't that's our biggest problem," he noticed, gesturing to her burning forehead and tired demeanor.

Emma nodded, "I guess we've finished the Captrenseize Jar, but when are we going to fight the Dark Master?"

"Oh no," Jake chided with folded arms, "There is no way you're going to fight him like this. I'm calling your parents and asking them to come and take care of you."

"Fine," submitted Emma, rolling her eyes in annoyance. "Here give me your cell, I'll talk to them."

Jake obliged, handing her his iPhone 5s with its blue case. After the dial tone, Emma began speaking.

"Hey mom."

"Emma! Sweetie, are you okay? Why are you calling from Jake's phone?"

"Well... it's kind of complicated. But, we did manage to get all the materials!"

"Okay, good job, but why haven't you come home for the weekend?"

At that, Emma gave Jake a look that was halfway between a glare and a "please help me my mom is interrogating me" look. Grinning, Jake snatched back his phone and began talking to Emma's mother.

"Hi Mrs. Andros."

"Oh hello, Jake. How are you? What is going on with Emma?"

"I'm alright, Mrs. Andros. Emma was very tired so she decided to stay for the weekend, but I just found out that she has a fever."

"Oh no! Thank you for taking care of her, Jake. I will be at the school in a few minutes to check on her, but I think it's best that she stays there. Thank you again and bye."

"Anytime. Bye," Jake concluded. He turned towards Emma and sat down next to her on the bed.

"Your mom's going to be here in a few minutes," he relayed. "I think that she thinks I'm more responsible than you."

Emma punched his arm and glared at him.

"Ow!" he cried, rubbing his arm, "What was that for? I mean you know it's true."

Emma gave him a weak smirk and replied, "That was for making me call my mom. And then acting all responsible in front of her." She yawned quietly and lay back down on her pillow. Silently, Jake stood up and walked over to her bookshelf, picking up the first book he could find.

"Hmm... The Fault in Our Stars. Oh no, is that the one where Augustus dies?" he asked to nobody in particular.

"Yeah," muttered Emma from the other side of the room. "It was pretty sad. I don't suggest reading it."

"I know," he answered. "It was the movie we were both watching when we first met."

Emma giggled, "You were totally flirting with me that day!"

"Yes. I most certainly was." Jake admitted, "How could I not?"

Blushing, Emma did not respond. Jake carefully opened the book to see a signature from John Green, a note written to Emma, and a crudely drawn anglerfish.

"No way," he marveled, "Is this signed by John Green? Saying 'Don't forget to be awesome'? And does it have a Hanklerfish??"

Emma laughed, "I never knew you were a fan of the Vlogbrothers."

"Are you kidding me?" His eyes widened in excitement, "I'm a huge Nerdfighter!"

"Well, I got to go to one of Hank's-"

Suddenly, the door creaked open. From behind it emerged Emma's mom holding a cooling pack and a thermometer.

"Oh sweetie," she cried. "Are you okay?"

Emma shrugged, "I kind of feel awful..."

"Well, at least you don't look awful," pointed out Jake.

As Emma punched his arm, her mom rushed over to her bedside and placed her hand on her forehead. Pulling out a thermometer, she checked Emma's temperature and gasped.

"You have a fever of 105!" she exclaimed, "That's no normal fever..."

After a long pause, she continued. "Did you, by any chance, get hurt when the Samurai attacked you?"

Emma didn't answer, so Jake did it for her. "She got cut right here," he explained, pushing her hair away from her neck. "I didn't think it was major, but..." He trailed off.

Emma's mom shook her head sadly. "There may have been poison on that dagger," she suspected. "The sickness isn't contagious or deadly, but you won't be able to fight for a week or so-"

"A week?" Emma repeated, shocked. "But, we just finished the Captrenseize Jar! We have to get to the Dark Master before he does anything else."

Her mom gave her a pitiful glance, "I'm sorry. I know how hard it is to just sit by, but you can't risk making it worse. Then, it might actually be deadly."

She looked at Jake. "Jake, sweetheart, can you please take care of Emma for now? I have to help your principal get the defenses ready in case the Samurai attack. Here, take this cooling pack and place it on her head until her fever goes down. I have to run... I check up on you both later." With that, she dashed out of the room to go and build up defenses around the school or whatever else she was going to do.

Jake and Emma came to a silent agreement after a bit of glaring, smirking, and pleading. Jake lay down next to her and waited until her breathing became heavy, only to pick up the book and begin reading. But when he finished it, he looked up only to find the bed empty.

"Well crap," he muttered, sprinting out of the room to go find Emma.
