Chapter 39 (Rewrite)
I looked at the time and saw it had been almost over an hour. My phone started to ring, and I looked at the caller ID to see it was Henry.
"Well, look who it is," I chirped with a smile.
He let out a chuckle, and I knew he was shaking his head. "I've tried calling your phone but couldn't get through for the longest while. James had blocked your connection, so I scolded him for a bit before he unblocked it," he huffed.
"I know. Don't worry about it," I smiled. I missed Henry. He was like a father figure to me and his wife. I wish I could've stayed with them, but I knew he was busy since he had to deal with other gangs and was one of the head leaders. "So, how are you doing?" he asked sincerely.
"Good," I half-lied, trying not to worry him. There was a long pause, and I knew something was up. "What's wrong?" I asked, concerned. Henry never went quiet unless it was a conflicting topic.
There was another moment of silence before he broke it with a sigh. "I don't want you on any missions anymore," his words came out heavy. I felt myself going into shock but, at the same time, anger. "WHAT!!" I shrieked in disbelief.
"After what happened I-"
"Bullshit. Who put you up to this?" my brows furrowed at what his excuse might have been.
"No one. I-"
"Henry cut the crap. I know you didn't plan this because if you did, then we would have met up," I hissed. He sighed, "Sweetheart, I know you're mad, but watch your tone. James said you can't be on any missions until he knows what happened to you," he informed me.
"That cunt," I mumbled to myself. I heard the door open and I turned to see Lucifer getting inside the car.
"I'm sorry. He said if I didn't tell you, he would pull everyone out of the organization," he replied. "I'm going to kick his ass," I growled into the phone.
"Sky," Henry tried to reason with me. I hanged up before he could say another word. I started the car and pulled up the fashion build's address. "I need to do two things," I gritted through my teeth as I sped off towards the address.
This fucker thinks he can pull me out of missions? I'm going to kick his ass so bad that he's going to wish he never fucked me with. What kind of a brother is this dumbass? And here I thought Gabe was pushing it.
"He pulled you out of the organization?" Lucifer's voice mumbled next to me as he read my mind. I sped pass the cars and took a hard right. "Yes," I growled and gripped the steering wheel tight.
"In my opinion, I think that's a good thing," he sided. I turned towards him with a glare, debating if to slam on the brakes so his head would head to the dashboard. "I didn't ask for your fucking opinion," I snarled and turned back towards the road. From the corner of my eye, I could see his fists tightened on his lap. I knew he was holding back his anger so he wouldn't explode on me. I didn't care. How dare he side with James.
I may hate missions, but they're the only thing that gives me some sort of outside freedom, and it's what I was trained for. I finally arrived in front of the building and parked in front. I took out all the folders from the bag and grabbed my phone. I got out of the car and shut the door behind me, only to hear another door shut. I turned around to see Lucifer, also outside the car.
"Don't even bother arguing with me," he snapped, and I saw his eyes blacken. I rolled my eyes and walked towards the building. I walked in with Lucifer behind me and walked up to the main desk. "Hello. How may I help you?" the lady asked.
"Jacob De Smet. What floor is he on?" I asked bluntly. One of her eyebrows rose up at my question. "The 30th floor. Is he expecting you?" she asked, eyeing both Lucifer and me.
"Nope," I replied walking away towards the elevator. "Ma'am, you're not allowed to go up," she called out, trying to stop me. I got in the elevator and pushed the button. The door dinged open and I walked out with Lucifer still behind me. "Hello, Miss. Do you have an-"
"No," I ignored her question. She ran in front me toward the office which I'm guessing it was Jacob's. "Sir," she called out in a panic. I watched as the guy in his last 20's looked up towards her. "She came unannounced," she rushed out. "I tried to-"
"You may leave Ms. Gilbert," he dismissed her. She nodded her head fast and closed the door behind her. I watched as the black-haired guy eyed me, and I heard a low growl next to me. "Normally, I would call security, but this seems interesting," his voice came out amused as he leaned back in his chair.
"We talked about an hour ago. Skylar Marran," I bluntly stated. "Oh," his shoulders slumped, and I watched as he opened his laptop and started typing away.
"Oh?" I questioned. "Yes. You know where the door is so see yourself out or I'll have security come," he spoke without looking up.
"The fucks your problem" I scoffed but he just continued to type away on his laptop. My blood was now boiling to the max. I approached his desk and slammed his laptop shut, startling him. He reached for the phone and I grabbed his hand, "You're going to either fucking hear me out or I will break your arm in one move" I threatened.
I watched as a smirk made its way to his lips, "Do that and I'll sue and arrest your ass," he warned.
"I've done worse," I whispered and watched as his smirk dropped. "You have 5 minutes," he glared. I released his arm and pulled out the folders from the envelope. This is my best friend, Melanie Garcia. She has been trying to apply for a job here but -"
"I don't hire anyone," he said. I glanced at him, trying to keep from slapping him. "Just look at her information and designs," I huffed.
I watched as he started to look through her information, not phased by it. He opened her design cover book, and I watched his eyes widen. "This is her work?" he asked in disbelief, looking up at me. "The one and only?" I smiled, knowing his attention was finally caught. I watched as his finger traced over her drawing. "I had to print it out. She has the original one and also has a fabric design book," I informed him.
I watched as he flipped through some more designs and traced each one. "Enough said," he closed the folders. "This is the best work I've ever seen. I'm sorry about my attitude earlier and she is hired. I will send her an email, and I need her to come in so we can discuss things," he said, standing up. Wow, this actually worked.
"Alright, but I need you to send me the acceptance letter instead," I stated. Sure, I can just print it here for you if you like," he asked, sitting down in front of his laptop. That would be great!" I replied with glee. I watched as he typed in a few things, and then the printer went off.
He got up and walked across the room towards the printer and took the paper. I watched as he walked back to his desk and pulled out a blue inked pen. He signed the paper and then stamped it to make it official I guess. He then folded it and placed it in an envelop and sighed his name in front in script.
"Here you go, and I'm going to keep her files," he said, handing me the envelope. "Thank you."
"How's Justin?" he asked. I looked up to see him grinning as he leaned against his desk. "Justin?" I asked.
He let out a chuckled, "Justin as in your brother," he replied in an obvious tone. My eyes widened, "You know Justin?" I asked in shock. "Believe it or not, yes. Through the organization of course," he informed me. "Small world," I mumbled, and he seemed to hear me since he hummed.
"I haven't seen you around. It's been a while," he admitted. "I never saw you around," I replied a bit confused. I'm pretty sure I would've remembered him if I had seen him before. "You're very well known in the organization," he chuckled.
"So I've been told," I mumbled dryly. I wanted this conversation to end already. "I'll see you around. I have to take care of some other things," I dismissed myself. "Alright, and I'm looking forward to your friend working here," he said, taking the hint.
"She is, too, and I forgot to ask, but why did you hang up on me?" I asked. "I thought someone was pretending to be you. Skylar Marran is calling for fashion. I didn't think so," he laughed and I shook my head in understanding.
"See you around," I laughed. "Be safe and tell your friend to stop being so tense," he nodded behind me. I turned around and saw Lucifer tensed up. I completely forgot he was here. He seemed to read my thoughts since he turned my way.
"He's got a stick shoved up his ass," I mumbled but Jacob heard me since he was laughing. I walked out and into the elevator with Lucifer behind me. I pushed the lobby button and my phone started to ring. I pulled out my phone and answered.
"Hello."
"Are you okay?" Henry asked concerned.
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?" I asked.
"Well, you hanged up on me and, not to mention, sounded pissed off," he recalled. "Yeah, I'm about to fix that," I mumbled.
"Sweetheart, I don't want you to tell me what happened. That's your choice, but I doubt James will ever change his mind until you tell him. I know that's unfair of him but there's nothing I could really tell him. You know how stubborn your brother is," he explained.
"You could've taken a switch from our tree in the back and whipped his ass," I suggested causing him to burst into full-on laughter. "My sweet child. You are no joke. I know whatever I say, it isn't going to persuade you from doing otherwise, so all I will say is take it easy, and I'm here if you need me," He offered in a sincere tone. I couldn't help but smile, "Thanks, Dad."
"Of course. Love you kiddo," he softly replied. "Love you too," I smiled as I hung up and got into the car.
I turned to see Lucifer pissed off, looking towards the road. "Can you teleport us because I'm not driving 3 hours straight," I asked in defeat. Driving to the house was honestly just too much work to only kick James' ass. He turned to me, and I saw his eyes blackened, "Do I look like some sort of teleporting machine to you?" he spat, annoyed.
"I'll just ask Axel then," I fired back, and I heard a frustrating groan from him. Within a blink, we were in the driveway of my mansion. "Was that so fucking hard?" I mumbled as I got out the car. Lucifer mumbled something, but I ignored it. I walked up to the door and twisted the knob only to see it was locked.
I scanned my hand on the pad but it didn't light up. I tried to use my powers to unlock the door but nothing worked. I then buzzed the doorbell and heard nothing. I buzzed again and I heard someone shouted, "HOLD ON."
I didn't have the patience so I kicked the door open and walked in. I heard a click and turned to see Mason aiming a gun at me. "For fuck sake, Sky," he shrieked whilst putting his gun down.
"Why is the scanner not working?" I asked, looking around the lobby to see it was empty except for Lucifer, Mason, and me. "Yeah, it's acting up, so we got the security to come over later today," he said, leaning against the counter.
"Where's James?" I bluntly asked. He tensed at my tone and stood up straight. "Backyard. Everyone is in the backyard," he slowly answered.
I walked down the hall and out to the backyard. I watched as everyone was lounging around on the lawn. The wind blew a bit, and gray clouds formed. "Sky," someone chirped. I turned to my left to see Justin. His smile dropped when he saw my appearance. I looked around for James and saw him about 15 feet away.
"What are you doing here?" he asked once his eyes landed on me. I marched up to him with my fist clenched, "He's in some deep shit," I heard one of the guys mumbled.
"You don't have the authority to ban me from missions," I growled. "When you're ready, we can talk about what happened. After that, I will tell Henry to -"
"I don't give a fuck if your family James. I will kick your ass if I have to," I growled, pointing at him. "You took her out of missions?" someone asked.
"Yes, she needs a break and -"
"A month wasn't a break?" I asked full-on rage. "You need to back it up and chill out," James spat, looking down at me. I then did what I've never done in a long time. I tackled him to the ground. I sat on top him and threw punches down on him. He then realized what was happening and flipped me over so he was now on top off me. I tried to punch, but he grabbed my wrist and held it tight.
"I don't want to hurt you, but I will if I have to," he threatened. "You already did," I growled back and flipped him over. I stood up and held him in a headlock. He reached behind me and flipped me over, causing me to fall on my back. I then received a punch to the face and a sharp uppercut. I lifted my foot and flipped him over. I trapped his head between my legs and delivered punches to him. I saw my knuckles start bleeding along with James' face.
He then grabbed my pressure point in my leg and held it hard. I let out a scream, and lightning flashed. He got out of my grasp and then returned with punches to my face. He then flipped me over and held me in a headlock. "Alright, break it up, you two," a voice came into the hearing. I took the distraction to elbow James in the stomach, causing him to release me. I stood up and turned around, only to meet Gabe's face.
He was standing between us. "Both of you stop! You're both bloody, and this was uncalled for," he hissed, looking at both of us. My lip was bleeding along with a cut on my eyebrow that was dripping blood down my face, and James just had his nose bleeding. I pushed Gabe aside and started walking back into the house.
I walked down the hall, into the lobby, and then out the door. I got in the passenger seat and not long after Lucifer got in the driver's seat. "Are you okay?" his voice came out soft. "Let's just go," my voice sounded scratchy as I tried to hold my emotions together. He didn't say anything, but within a blink, we were in front of his house. I stepped out the car and grabbed the laptop bag along with Mel's acceptance letter and my phone. I walked up to the door and opened it only to have someone touch my face.
I snatched the hand and looked up to see it was just Axel. "Baby girl what happened?" he frowned. "People love to piss me off, is what happened," I growled, releasing his hand and walking inside.
"What did you do to her?" Axel shouted to Lucifer. "Why do you think I did something?" Lucifer shouted back at him in defense. I turned around to see Axel looking directly at Lucifer, and Lucifer was just tensed up and pissed off.
"You always happen to be the King of Fuck Shit Up," Axel called out. "Aren't you just peachy today? For your information, she and James got in a fight," he informed him and then turned to look at me.
"James, as in your brother James?" Axel asked, and I nodded. I watched as his eye blackened and his whole body went stiff. "I'm going to kick his ass," he growled in a loud voice. I just stared at him. Not knowing what to say or do. after a minute or so, I finally stopped staring and looked to see Axel ranting off to Lucifer. Lucifer was now just wearing an annoyed look. "Why didn't you kick his ass? You were there. It's so hard not to punch you right now and -"
"Chill out. It's no biggie. We have our fights, and no one is allowed to stop us," I cut Axel off, ranting. He turned to me, and I saw his eyes were blacker than before if it was possible. "No biggie?!" he asked, questioning my statement. "Have you seen what you look like, Sky? And you're telling me that everyone just stood there and watched?" he shouted in disbelief.
"Yup," I casually said, popping the 'p.' I turned around and started to walk up the stairs. "That's just plain stupid," Axel shouted, walking behind me. "We all know combat. Would you honestly want to fight someone else who knows combat?" I asked.
"...No, so then how did you guys stop fighting?" he asked as I walked into the room. "Must you ask so many questions?" Lucifer groaned. I mean, you're not looking out for her, so you might as well," Axel fired back. I dropped the Nike bag on the bed and the envelope on the dresser.
"The urge to kill you is unbearable at times," Lucifer mumbled. "Right back at you. So, like I was saying, how did you guys stop fighting," Axel asked.
I walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I had about one huge bruise on my left cheek and a cut on my eyebrow and lip. "Gabe stopped us." I looked at Axel's reflection, and leaning against the bathroom doorframe was Lucifer.
"There's no winning with Gabe since his combat is extreme," Axel said, and I nodded. I turned on the water and rinsed my face. I dried my face and looked up to see that only Axel was left in the bathroom with me. "I'm not trying to sound rude, but why are you still here?" I asked, walking back into the bed.
"You seem a bit...on edge," he paused, trying to find the right word. "Life's on edge. If you'll excuse me, I have some work to do."
He said his goodbyes and closed the door behind him as he left my room. I crashed on the bed and stared at the ceiling, lost in thoughts.
