Chapter 16 (Rewrite)
I hate this.
Punch
I want all my problems to vanish.
Punch
They do quickies?!
Punch, punch
It was now 1 a.m., and I was nowhere close to sleeping. I was in the basement of my house, releasing every emotion on my punching bag. After I got home, Henry got some team to pick up the bomb. After that, I received a few calls from the guys and Mel. Sean and Nate came back, and they would stay over for the weekend in the mansion. I was probably going to head back tonight since it was Friday.
I decided it was enough boxing since I had been at it for three hours. I walked up the stairs to my bedroom. I took off the boxing tape from my hand, tossed it in the garbage, and hopped in the shower. I let the cold water run on my now-healed bullet wound and my new bruised knuckles. After rinsing my hair and skin, I walked into my closet and decided I should just spend the night outside.
I slipped into some blue denim ripped jeans and wore a white and red plaid shirt. I wore my brown timber boots and shoved my phone and card into my pocket. I walked downstairs and out the door. I decided to go on foot and walk around the city.
I walked about four blocks down and found myself in a mall that led to restaurants and a movie theater. I walked around and decided to go to the park Mel talked about going to when she was here. I pulled out my phone and got directions to the park. Eight minutes later, I found myself in a park. There was a basketball court where a lot of guys were playing. The park wasn't empty except for the belchers and the kids' area.
I decided to take a seat on the empty bleachers. I pulled out my phone, replied to a few messages, and shoved it back in my pocket. I watched the guys play some rough basketball but still remained friendly. I zoned out and looked up at the sky. The stars were not seeable except for one or two.
My phone started to ring, and I looked at the caller ID. It was Mel.
"Sup," I answered.
"Um, don't be mad, but I tried to surprise you and meet you at the house," she said with a slightly hesitant voice.
"But?" I questioned, waiting for her to continue.
"But I got lost, so I dropped off in front of the Davis INC," she mumbled.
I sighed, "I'll be there in 15 minutes," I said before hanging up.
I got my phone out and pulled up the house address. I jumped off the belchers and started to run towards the house. Not too long after, I arrived at the house. I opened the garage and chose the Ferrari. I started it up and drove through the streets to the office.
I couldn't help but think it was weird for Mel to be in front of the office. I mean, the guys would've given her the address to the house, and I'm sure she could've just pulled up the directions on her phone. Also, I doubt the guys would let her come this far to the city alone. How did she even come here? Taking a taxi would be expensive unless she used the car, but that's still wasteful money. Something about it was suspicious, or maybe I'm overthinking. I love Mel, but honestly, I didn't want her here. I wanted to be left alone. I could already feel myself getting angry.
In about 12 minutes, I stopped in front of the office to see a group of guys around Mel.
"For fuck sake," I sighed. I got out of the car and walked toward Mel. Once she noticed me, she ran towards me and hugged me. I could feel the panic in her breathing and relief as I hugged her back. "Let's go," she heaved in my ear.
I wanted to ask questions, but she pulled me towards the car. I heard footsteps behind me, and I turned to see the guys around Mel behind us. As we kept walking, I used my powers to hold them in their tracks. "I can't move," one of them mumbled, and soon, they started to yell for help.
Mel turned to look at them, but I turned her back around. "Get in," I said, opening the door for her. She got in, and I closed the door. I turned around to the guys to see them shouting for help as they tried to get their legs to move. I got in the car and drove off.
"I'm sorry," Mel mumbled as we pulled into the driveway. I turned the car off and looked at her.
"Mel, I don't want you to get upset, but why did you come?" I asked, staring at her for any sort of lie she may be hiding.
Her eyebrow rose, "To surprise my best friend?" she replied offendedly. I nodded, "Right, I know that, but why stop in front of the office? You could've chosen anywhere else, but you didn't. Even TGI Friday, was on the way over here. You know the route from there to home. You've never been here Mel. What makes you think you could've found your way home?" I found myself yelling at her in anger.
Mel's eyes widened at my outburst before turning into a glare, followed by her arms crossing in front of her chest. "Sky, whatever you're going through, don't project it onto me. I came to check on you because I care. Right now, you're acting really insecure, as if you're blaming me for something. If you are, spit it out," she scoffed.
"In case you hadn't noticed, I wanted to be alone. It's whatever," I muttered before taking off.
When we got home, Mel angrily went upstairs, and I followed before going into my room and shutting my door. I don't care what Mel's excuse was for coming at this point, she should've fucking asked.
~~~
A few hours passed, and I was working on my laptop since I couldn't sleep. My door swung open, revealing Mel with an angry look. The neck of her shirt, along with her face and hair, was all wet. "Did you have to do that??" she shouted as she approached me.
My eyebrow scrunched up in confusion. "Do what?" I asked. She glared at me and folded her arms over her chest. "Don't play innocent. You screamed in my ear to get up. It wasn't a simple scream. It was more like a heart attack scream, and then you threw cold water on me. I admit the screaming is okay, but really, cold water?" she yelled angrily.
"Mel, I was in my room the whole time," I stared at her blankly. She stared at me, looking for the lie, but her mouth dropped. "It wasn't you?" she asked, and I shook my head as I got off my bed and realized I knew who did it.
"I know who did," I mumbled as I started to walk down the stairs. Mel followed behind, and I walked into the living room.
"You know that's just called invasion of privacy," I shouted to the empty room. "Who are you talking to?" Mel asked as she looked around the empty room.
"Get out!" I shouted into the room again, looking around for any sign of him. Mel looked at me like I was crazy. I usually gave her that look. "Just go upstairs and go back to sleep," I suggested to her.
She stood her ground and shook her head. "You think I'm going to sleep after what happened, and you told me you didn't do it. Now you're talking to an empty room... Are you on some drug I don't know about?" she gasped.
"Mel," I rolled my eyes, "You're fucking annoying."
She let out a scoff, "Speak for yourself."
"What do you want?" I asked, looking away from her into the empty room. He then revealed himself sitting on the couch. "To check on you," he smiled. "Should I call James or the cops?" Mel said in a hushed tone.
Lucifer looked at her and smirked as he got up. "Sweetheart, do you know who I am?" he questioned with amusement. I stepped in front of Mel so he couldn't get to her.
I looked at her and gave her a small smile. "He's not going to do anything," I stated and watched as some of the colors drained off her face. "Just go upstairs," I said with a small smile.
"Who says I won't do anything?" Lucifer growled behind her. She let out a scream, and I pulled her in a hug. I felt her whole body shaking, and I looked up to see Lucifer with a playful smirk on his face.
"What do you want?" I fired getting more angry. He walked around the room and took a seat back on the couch. "That little trick you pulled back at the office with the glass," he said, glaring at me.
Mel pulled away from me and looked at me. I saw a bit of fear left on her face, but she gave me a soft smile. "Go upstairs," I said softly. She slowly nodded and looked behind me at Lucifer before walking up the stairs.
I looked at the cable box to see it was now 2 a.m. "So you came here at two o'clock in the morning to talk about me shattering your office to pieces?" I stated.
He shook his head. "Not only that but do you know how much it cost to clean that up and fix it? You're lucky they could do the job overnight," he yelled. I rolled my eyes.
"So you came here to lecture me about that?" I asked as I folded my hands across my chest. He stood up, and I saw the annoyed look on his face. "I'm starting to think you just came here because you're lonely," I teased.
His jawline tightened, and I knew I was getting under his skin. I walked to the fridge and pulled out a beer. I popped it open and took a sip. "Must you always drink?" he scoffed.
I looked at him in questioning. "This is the first time you're seeing me drink. Does it bother you?" I asked.
"Deeply," he stated as he leaned against the hallway wall. "Then yes. I must drink," I said, drinking some more. He rolled his eyes and mumbled something I couldn't understand in another language.
"You chanting or something," I mocked. He looked up at me and gave me a death stare. "How intimidating," I said sarcastically.
"Stop it!" his voice growled and became more profound. Back then, that tone used to scare me a bit. Not anymore. "My name is Lucifer, and I'm going to go all Hulk mode now," I mocked a little more as I walked out of the kitchen. I opened the entrance door and looked at him. "You found your way in; now I'll show you the way out," I smiled as I held the door open.
He rolled his eyes and walked back into the living room. I let out a groan and closed the door. I started walking towards the living room, "You know, this is an invasion of priv-" I stopped when I saw the living room was once again empty.
"Privacy," he finished the sentence, and I turned around to see him opening the fridge in the kitchen. "Yes, and it's not cool to just scare my best friend like that," I said, walking towards him. As I approached, he pulled out a beer and popped it open before disappearing again. What is with this guy and his disappearing?
"Is she your best friend through? I could sense your anger towards her, and it's not my fault she wouldn't wake up," I heard his voice in the hall. I drank some of my beer, then walked out of the kitchen and looked to see he was staring at a painting. I let out a groan and started walking over to him. "It's none of your business, and you're not even supposed to be here, so get out," I yelled, and he disappeared once I got closer again. Please be gone.
"I told you I'm not leaving," his voice came from inside the living room. I mentally screamed and cursed at him. You know how to teleport around the house, but you can't just do a simple task and leave? You're good at leaving, you know," I mumbled as I leaned against the living room door frame.
"I told you why," he raised his voice. Yeah, and I told you to get out," I fired back as I sipped on some beer. He rubbed the back of his head in frustration, and I walked off into the kitchen. I threw the empty beer bottle in a bag. I walked back into the living room and saw Lucifer sitting on the recliner.
I sat on the couch and looked at him to see he was staring at me. I ignored his stares and crisscrossed my legs. I stared at the TV and looked at my reflection. I turned the TV on and flipped through the channels. I stopped when Red, the movie, was on. It's no use trying to kick him out of the house. He's stubborn as a mule. The guy's lucky I can't kill him.
"So what did you do in these past four years?" he asked, breaking the silence. I kept my gaze on the TV and decided to ignore him. After a few seconds, the TV turned off, and I sighed as if he had turned it off with his powers. "I just did missions and stuff. It's been the same," I lied, looking at him.
His eyebrow arched up. "So you didn't go back to school and get a degree in psychology?" he read into my mind. "That, too," I said, getting up. I don't like where this is heading. I walked into the kitchen and got a bottle of water. "Any relationships?" he asked, walking into the kitchen.
"Some...yes," I replied, unsure where this was going. I opened the bottle and took a drink. I closed the bottle and started to walk back into the living room. If I had a dime for every time I entered the living room or kitchen tonight, I would have to add a million to my account.
"Tell me," he said, gently grabbing my arm. He pushed me up against the wall, and I felt trapped as he placed his hand near my head. "Tell you what?" I asked, looking up at him. His scent engulfed me, and I watched as his eyes turned black.
His eyes borrowed into mine and his scent got higher. I wanted to collapse in his hands. I wanted to give my body over to him. Let him have me, but what's to stop him from leaving me again? He's moved on. "Tell me you still love me," his voice came out deep and angelic all at once. I felt as if I couldn't breathe for a second. Don't think. Don't think. "No, I don't love you." My lies came out with hesitation as I tried to push him back, but he didn't budge.
"You're lying," he softly spoke, lowering his face to me. Staring at him, I couldn't help but feel like I was in a trance. It felt so peaceful here. I could be stuck in this position forever and be okay with it. His scent, his features, his tattoos that clung to his skin of perfection. I looked up at him and saw he was waiting for me to say it. "I am not," I defended.
He squinted his eyes. "I can read your mind, Sky. You're not telling me the truth," he smirked. He knew I wanted him.
"Maybe you can't accept the truth," I blurted out, forcing myself to push him aside. This time, he moved, and I started to walk upstairs. I walked into my room and saw Mel sitting on my bed. She looked up and gave me a small smile, which I returned.
"Why wouldn't you just say it?" his voice came behind me. I rolled my eyes and walked into my room. I closed the door and locked it.
Mel opened her mouth to say something but closed her mouth. "He's not going to leave," I said, letting out a sigh as I walked towards the bed.
"Damn right, I'm not. Just say it, and I'll leave," he offered. I let out a groan, lay on my bed, and held a pillow over my head as I screamed.
"How cute," I heard his muffled voice through the pillow. I sat up and threw the pillow at him, but he caught it. "Where does Gabriela think you are right now?" my eyebrow rose.
"Meeting," he stated as he sat on the couch.
"You're like an annoying tick, except ticks would be easier to get rid of than you," I snapped. He placed a hand over his heart, "That hurt," he joked. "Wow, you really are annoying," Mel mumbled.
Lucifer turned to look at her, and she shrugged. "So why wouldn't you leave her alone?" Mel asked as she got off the bed.
"Because he's lonely," I butt in before he could answer.
He glared at me and turned to Mel. "None of your business," he glared at her.
Before I could call him out, Mel fired back. "Technically, it is my business. You see, she's my best friend. We've been through almost everything together. I'm always here for her, and she's always here for me. We always have each other's backs. So once again, it is my business," she fired back at him.
Lucifer kept the smirk on his face and shook his head. I found it amusing how he could get under her skin so quickly. "I would applaud you for that remarkable speech, but I don't care."
Mel put her hands up in surrender. "I'm going to my room. He's just a jerk," Mel shouted as she opened the door and closed it behind her.
Lucifer used his powers to slam the door shut and lock it. Before I could say a word, I found myself lying back on my bed as Lucifer had me trapped between his hands as he was above me. I looked up as his face was inches away from mine. His eyes were black, and his scent engulfed me yet again.
"Now, where were we," his lips smirked.
