Chapter 12 (Rewrite)
The alarm's music slowly faded, and I turned to look at my phone on the table beside me. My alarm had been going off for the past 20 minutes, and I hadn't realized it til now. I turned my attention back to the dimly lit living room ceiling that was being illuminated by the sun. My ears drowned out the alarm noise, and I remained on the couch, wondering what my day would be like. I spent the whole entire night just lost in my thoughts, too numb to eat or even sleep. My brothers and Mel kept calling, but I ignored every single one of them. I didn't feel like talking to anyone. I also knew if I genuinely said how I felt, they would send me back to therapy, and I would be on meds all over again. I was not going to those meds again. They made me feel worse than I did before for my depression.
I sighed and shut my alarm off after another 20 minutes of zoning out. I got off the couch and headed upstairs to brush my teeth and shower. As I was showering, I couldn't help but zone out again.
Right now, I felt like my brain was working overtime, replaying yesterday's encounter with Lucifer. Something about me admitting I didn't care to live seemed to strike something in him. Truthfully speaking, it's not like I would jump in front of a train or blow my brains out. However, it's not like I would put maximum effort into dodging a train if I were to be pushed onto the tracks. I wouldn't commit suicide, but if the scenario was with my life in danger, it's not like I'd resist death. I spent the whole night wondering if the Devil had changed since I last saw him. Was he more compassionate or understanding now?
I chuckled again at the thought. Who was I kidding? Of course not. This man didn't care about anything or anyone but himself. Sure, he did save me, but was it because he cared or didn't want to deal with the consequences after I went splat?
I finished my shower and towel-dried myself before making my way to my closet. Standing in the middle, I looked at all the different clothes. Maybe if I didn't wear business casual, I'd get fired. If that doesn't work, then I can always slack off on my work or act out. That should do something, right?
I put on a black laced corset, leather pants, and a black jacket. To top it all off, I put on a pair of black boots with 6-inch heels. I grabbed my phone and headed downstairs into the garage. Looking around, I decided to go with my motorcycle. I grabbed a helmet and put it on before hopping out and driving out of the garage. As I drove out, I realized it was still raining.
I reeved my engine and took off in the rain not caring how dangerous it was considering I was in heels. I drove through the city and pulled up to the office. I parked in front and looked up at the sky. I watched as the raindrops fell on my helmet's tinted visor. Rain is such a beautiful thing. I got off my bike and headed into the bakery across the street. I glimsped at my phone to see it was almost 9 in the morning, in other words I was late and didn't care. I took my helmet off and ordered myself a chocolate shake before making my way inside the office building. I shook the water off it along with any excess water on myself. I didn't care much about my clothes being wet. This was going to be my lame attempt at trying to get fired.
As I made my way into the lobby, the lady at the front desk just eyed me before rolling her eyes. I headed towards the elevator but stopped in my steps before turning to look at her. I walked over to her desk causing her to look up at me.
"What's your problem...Nancy?" I asked looking at her name tag. She rolled her eyes again. "I'm waiting," I growled. Part of me wanted to use my powers to choke her out right where she sat.
"I don't see how you fit in here, and your outfits are way too tacky," the bitch finally spoke a word. "Ah, I finally understand," I smirked. She was one of those bitches who think they can get anything they want in life. She also looks like the type to suck up to all the guys who work here. I seen the way she bats her eyes at them playing all innocent Hell, I even saw literally when I walked in for my interveiw and she was trying to flirt with Mr. Kirkham.
She furrowed her eyebrows, "Understand what?"
"You're the type to flirt around with all the bosses in the industry or in this case, any man that shows you the slightest attention. You will curl your hair and bat your lashes. Some might say you might sleep with them if you could. I've seen the way you look at Mr. Kirkham. He sees you as an employee, and you see him as some hot guy you would love to bang. You will look at every girl in disgust and judge them, but you would never expect them to tell you anything to your face," I smirked at the end. I know this was overkill and extra but I am hoping this would also somehow help me with getting fired.
She looked at me in shock and gasped. "Wait until I tell the CEO. You'll be fired!" she threatened.
"Oh no. I'm so scared," I laughed before walking into the elevator. I pushed my floor button and then came out to greet the nice lady who was at the receptionist's desk. Why couldn't that bitch in the lobby be more like this lady? She was always lovely and genuine.
I walked into Mr. Kirkham's office to see he was on the phone. "No, sir... She's just arrived... Okay," he said as he looked at me and hung up the phone. You're late, and what are you wearing?" he shrieked while getting up. Poor guy looked like he was going to have a heart attack.
I shrugged, "I decided to go with a new look." I leaned on my desk and licked the whipped cream that covered my chocolate shake.
"You're going to get fired! Mr. Davis has just ordered that you be his new assistant. You are no longer my assistant," Mr. Kirkham informed me. I stared at him, waiting for a laugh or some sort of indicator that this was a joke, but he wasn't bluffing.
My eyes widened, "WHAT!!"
He rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah. He wants you up there from now on," he said, referring to the 26th floor. I wanted to argue my way out of this, but I could already tell that wasn't going to work, considering Lucifer was his boss.
"He's not that bad, but you should get going before he calls me again," he offered me a smile. From that sentence alone, I could tell he didn't know who Lucifer really was. Anyone who knew Lucifer would tell you he's bad just but the sound of it.
I slowly walked to the door and turned to look at him. "It was nice working for you, Mr. Kirkham," I admitted. "You're the best assistant I've ever had," he smiled back.
I walked out of the office and got back in the elevator. I pressed the 26th button, and seconds later, the door opened. There was no front desk, no nothing. Just a clear hall filled with art and some couches. Straight down the hallway was a glass wall that seemed to be a one-way view. Only people inside the room can see the outside. Heading down the hall, I pushed open the door to the glass wall to see straight across the room was Lucifer sitting behind a massive desk.
Walking into the office, I looked to my right to see Mike, whom I met in the printing room. He gave me a small smile before continuing to go through some papers by his desk. I looked to my left to see Jake, whom I had also met in the printing room. He smiled at me before continuing to type on his computer. I turned back to the main desk to see Lucifer staring at me intensely. His eyes lingered over my body as he examined my outfit.
"You summoned me, your Highness," I sarcastically spoke, walking up to Lucifer's desk.
A smirk twitchered on his lips as he leaned back in his chair. "Why yes, little one, I did. You now work for me and not Mr. Kirkham," he stated.
I forced a smile on my face, "We should celebrate," I smiled back as I placed my damp helmet on his desk.
His eyebrow arched up. "How shall we celebrate Ms. Marran?" he asked, trying to sound formal.
"We can go up to the roof and jump. It'll be just like skydiving. You should go first," I offered.
He glared at me and I heard some gasp from the guys behind me. "Funny," he mumbled.
I shrugged, "I try."
I felt something warm all over me as if I were being wrapped in a heated blanket. I looked at Lucifer, who was now staring at my wet hair, which was now becoming damp. He was drying and warming me up.
"Stop it," I snapped. His eyes flickered over to mine before stopping. "Well then, don't be stupid and drive in the rain you caused," he mumbled in a hushed tone so Mike and Jake wouldn't hear us. My jaw dropped, "I didn't cause that," I shrieked as I pointed out the wall window behind him.
He sent a glare at him. "Okay, yesterday that was me, but this one isn't me. That's just normal weather," I scoffed in disbelief. The audacity for blaming Mother Nature on me. He rolled his eyes, "Whatever helps you sleep at night, Sweetheart," he mumbled before going through some of the papers on his desk.
"I'm not going to work for you," I admitted, crossing my hands over my chest. "I didn't expect you to," he said, not taking his eyes off the papers. I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion and anger. Well, what am I doing here, then?"
He shrugged, "I'm just keeping you here for business hours, and in return, I won't show up around you outside of work. I know you're going to try to quit, but you can't and don't even try to run. If you run—" he paused before looking at me, "You know very well I can find you anytime I please."
I stared at him in disbelief. This mother fucker. A smirk rose to his face as he read my mind.
"Your desk is over there," he motioned to the empty desk in front of Jake's desk.
I felt my anger growing along with hopelessness. Every plan I had was getting thrown out the window right now, and I couldn't do anything. There was nothing I could say or do to change this entity's mind. There was no way around the situation. I felt like everything was stopping in place.
"Fuck you," I snarled at him, causing lightning to strike hard. I watched as his eyes bore into my mind, unphased by the loud sound. "Told you it's your fault the weather is like this," he smirked. I stared at the window debating if i wasn't to break the whole glass wall that was a window to the outside of the building.
"Do it," Lucifer challenged. I looked back at him to see an amused look on his face. "See what happened?" His words came out more like a threat. I wasn't going to win this fight, and we both knew that.
I grabbed my helmet and headed over to my desk in defeat. I sat in my chair and put my feet on the desk as I drank my shake.
"How is he allowing you to do this?" Jake whispered from behind his computer.
"What?" I asked, confused, turning around to look at him. "He isn't yelling at you or anything. You're not working and aren't even dressed appropriately," he explained in a hushed tone. I started laughing at how he was whispering, considering Lucifer could hear everything.
"We have a long history," I briefly spoke, not caring to give him any details. He nodded and continued to work. I headed over to Mike's desk and leaned over, "Hey."
He looked up and smiled at me, "Hello."
"Get back to work," Lucifer's voice boomed through the room, causing Mike to go through papers again. I looked up at Lucifer to see him looking at me. You're such an ass.
It seemed like he read my mind as he smirked. I said my goodbyes to Mike and walked back to my desk. I sat in my chair and placed my feet on the desk. I grabbed my phone and played Candy Crush while I sipped on my chocolate. Time passed by as slowly as possible, and I considered jumping off the roof.
It was almost lunchtime, and I was thankful. I could just run out and jump in joy. "Alright, it's lunch. What would you guys like?" Lucifer announced.
"I'll go with my usual," Mike said, and Jake agreed. What?! He's making us have lunch in his office!?!
He turned to look at me. "What would you like, Ms. Marran?" he smiled.
"Poison," I smiled back. He rolled his eyes and pulled out his phone, most likely to order. Mike grabbed his chair and dragged it over to Jake and me.
"How come you're here?" Mike asked.
"Well, Mr. Dumbass made Mr. Kirkham give me up, so now I'm supposed to work for him," I shrugged.
"He's never been this cool with anyone rebel-"
"We have a history. That's all I'm going to say," I smiled. Mike took the hint and dropped the topic.
"So, do you guys always have lunch in his office?" I asked. They both nodded.
The door burst open, and a lady walked in with shopping bags in her hand. "BABY!!" she squealed.
"Baby?" I mumbled between Jake and Mike.
I watched Lucifer's eyes flicker from mine to this lady as he stood up. She was a bit taller than me and was wearing a red dress that hugged her body, revealing every curve. I can't lie; it fit her pretty well.
"That's his perky girlfriend. She's snobby as they get," Jake spoke in a hushed tone. I watched as she dropped the bags on his desk and wrapped him in a hug. Lucifer looked at me, and I felt like killing him. Just yesterday, this fucker said he loved me, and he's with someone?
Lightning struck rapidly, causing everyone to jump except Lucifer and me. A smirk rose to his lips as he could tell how I was feeling. Part of me was a bit embarrassed that I couldn't control my feelings and powers at the moment, but the other part felt like it didn't matter.
You're dead to me.
I watched as his smirk slowly faded as he read my mind. I turned in my chair and placed my feet on the desk while scrolling through my phone.
