"I could have driven myself," Robin leaned into his gloved hand. His masked eyes stared out the Batmobile window and traced the mountain's rough edges. They were near the ocean so despite being inside, he could smell the outside. He kept his eyebrows furrowed in an angry fashion as his partner, Nightwing, sat beside him in the driver's seat.
"After the stunt you pulled?" the adult questioned. He remembered what Batman told him, how Damian thought it would be a marvelous idea to disobey direct orders and take matters into his own hands. Something he was more than familiar with doing. "You're lucky to be allowed within ten feet of a steering wheel." Nightwing sped up the vehicle to make the drive quicker, edging away from the speed limit.
Damian gestured to his surroundings. "So this is my punishment?" Nightwing looked at him. "Enduring a bunch of school children?"
"This is not a punishment," Nightwing began. "Hopefully, you'll learn to be a part of a team. And they're not children. They're teenagers." He corrected. Damian replied with a grumble. "Don't tell me Damian Wayne is afraid of a little socializing."
Robin turned back, the hood of his cloak moving against the back of his head. The munched material came between him and the seat. "I'm not afraid of anything. Teammates are a liability.
"Oh really?" Nightwing faced the road. "Then what am I to you?"
"An unavoidable irritation." Robin glared.
Nightwing licked his dry lips and cleared his throat, not bothered by his brother's insult. "Speaking of avoidable I should probably tell you because it's been a while since we've had a quiet one-on-one talk," this caught Damian's attention. "She knows you're back. Or at least not surrounded by monks."
Damian thought for a second and his jaw tightened. "Who knows?" Nightwing dodged his gaze. "Who knows, Grayson?" Nightwing's silence was more than enough to answer his question. "What the hell Grayson! If I wanted her to know I would have informed her!" He gave a short breath out. "How long has she known?"
Nightwing kept his masked eyes out the window. "Um since before Talia's death." He could tell Damian was mentally killing him. "Look she called to catch up and I let it slip that you came back to help find Bruce."
Damian massaged his temples and sighed, "You are unbelievable Grayson. Well, last I heard Sparrow retired when she moved to Star City. So why tell me this now?" Once again Nightwing fell silent. Taking this as another answer Damian was quick to keep asking. "Grayson -" Damian was cut short by the breathtaking view of the giant 'T' shaped building growing over the horizon.
Within the Titans' Tower Blue Beetle, respectively known as Jaime, dodged the simulations. He was surrounded and the scarab on his back helped him find ways to defeat his opponents. Raven, flew above the blue armored teen and used her power to stab beams of energy through each pixelated man. Beat Boy, also known as Garfield, took form as a billy goat to knock the enemies down with his hard horns, bleating as he kicked. He then transformed into a gorilla and rhino to take down the rest of the simulations. Raven continued to find different tactics to beat the training protocol.
Beast Boy dropped down beside Raven. "You were having another nightmare last night. I wanted to make sure everything was -"
"Look, I appreciate your concern, I guess. But they're dreams. Just dreams." As she took it upon herself to finish off the rest of the simulations, Garfield transformed back into his original form, a green teenaged boy with pointed ears. Raven glanced at him and looked away, "You know you're naked right?" Beast Boy gave her a confused stare until he looked down at his exposed parts.
"Ahh!" He covered himself with his hands and ran towards his uniform thrown on the floor. "I overslept, I was rushing. Forgot to put on my uniform. Okay? So I sleep in the nude. So what?" He quickly put on his red, black, and white uniform. "Animals are naked. I'm the entire animal kingdom crammed into a single magnificent specimen."
"You're something crammed into something," Raven crossed her arms.
"You're telling me," a h/c girl stood behind Beast Boy. He yelped at her presence and jumped to the side. She was in her uniform with a bow contorted into its smallest form strapped to her lower back. She looked at him with her e/c eyes. "What? Cat got your tongue BB?"
Beast Boy, or as she nicknamed him BB, stuck his tongue out at her. "I told you to not act like a ninja around me. It's scary!" The young woman rolled her eyes and smiled.
The scarab on Blue Beetle pulsated and lit up. Beast Boy rushed over to inspect. "What did that thing just say?"
"It was just laughing at you," Jaime answered. Garfield pouted and flicked the scarab causing it to get angry and attack the green boy. "I told you, don't annoy it." Beast Boy hid behind Raven as a new teammate entered the training room.
"Jaime's right. That scarab is not a pet," Starfire, the leader of the Teen Titans, walked up to the group of four. She wore thigh-high purple boots, fingerless purple gloves, and a short revealing purple dress with silver accents. Her bright red hair seemed unnatural as it paired well with her neon green eyes. "It may be fused to Jaime's spine, but it's not exactly under his control."
"It's like you and your pants," Y/n joked as she looked at Garfield and Raven nodded in agreement.
"That's why Jaime's here. That's why we're all here. To help each other control our gifts. Help one another become our best selves."
"Where else are we gonna go?" Blue Beetle commented. "I mean, we're a bunch of freaks, right?"
"Don't group me in with that label," Y/n held her hands up. "I'm not a freak just a-"
"An ex-assassin who has only just entered society," Jaime finished. "You're a freak too." The h/c girl rolled her eyes and looked away.
"Come on, guys, we're all family. Like the Three Amigos," Beast Boy tried to lighten the mood.
"Five," Raven corrected.
"Six," Starfire corrected her. "We're getting a visitor."
As the Teen Titans waited outside for the newcomer, they saw a dark sharp car speed towards them, but for an odd reason it didn't pull up to the front door but rather parked a few yards away. The window/door opened and out came a tall man in a dark suit with the blue Nightwing symbol on his chest.
Recognizing who it was, Y/n sprinted to meet him in the middle and jumped into a hug. He hugged her and spun her around. It has been some time since the pair of best friends saw each other in person. Nightwing slung his arm around her smaller frame and the two began to walk to the rest of the team.
"You got taller," Nightwing noticed. "And you (cut your hair/let your hair grow out). It looks really good." Y/n smiled and thanked him. "And I see you're not wearing brown anymore," he looked down at her newest uniform.
Her old brown uniform was replaced with a lighter tan, a sleeveless leotard made of a thicker material than traditional gymnastic uniforms. On her legs she wore reddish tinted leggings, both clothes clung to her form to show her newly developed body. Connecting the two was a dark, dull, yellow utility belt that contained any knives or shurikens needed on the battlefield. Attached to the belt were her bow holder and quiver. She still had the type of cloak she had before, the material cutting off mid back with a hood. Only this time the hood was now a deep red. Her gloves, mask, and below the knee boots were the same dark black color.
"Yeah, I thought it was time for a change. Now, I'm Cardinal," she smiled at her brother figure.
"Yeah," he stopped to look at her before delivering the news of why he arrived. He gave her one more side hug. "My baby bird is growing up." Cardinal laughed and shrugged him off as he went to greet the rest of the team.
"Nightwing."
"Starfire."
The two, overflowing with tension, shook hands. Cardinal rolled her eyes at them and asked. "So, why are you here Nightwing?" He moved to stand beside Star, leaving Cardinal alone, facing the team. Nightwing and Starfire shared glances and both looked at the fifteen-year-old. She looked at everyone and furrowed her eyebrows, "What?"
Taking that as a cue, a voice behind her cleared their throat. Being all too familiar whose voice it was, Y/n paled. She turned around was face to face with Robin. Y/n could hear Richard introduce Damian to the team but she didn't bother to listen anymore. In her head, it was just her and Damian, in the other's presence, and she decided to do the one thing that's been itching at her for a very long time.
Cardinal raised her hand and backhanded him across the face and pushed her way back inside.
