28. Not Read to Make Nice

"Remind me next time to wear shoes with more traction next time," Stiles pants as we bolt down the wide hallway, running away from the sounds of growls and fighting. Peter, Scott, and Chris had stayed behind to fight off the twins, and the rest of us were now running towards the last ambulance. Allison was right at my side, and I could tell that she was staying close on purpose.

Derek had Cora in his arms, running ahead of us. Jennifer was right behind him, running in her high wedged shoes. I was furious that she was clearly trying to get Derek and the rest of us on her side, which made no sense at all. She's killing innocent people; you can't justify that.

Derek kicks a set of two doors open as we all stumble into the garage, my heart leaping when I saw the ambulance still sitting there. We quickly ran over and threw open the doors as Derek set Cora inside, Stiles climbing in after her. They lay her gently on the surface before Jennifer's voice rings out, her tone scaring me.

"Over here."

Allison gives me a nervous glance before we all look over at her, seeing that she was staring at something on the other side of the ambulance. I clutch the dagger in my hand, still not sure how to use it properly, as I trail behind Derek and Allison, curious to see what we were going to look at.

When my eyes found what everyone was staring at, my heart sank into my stomach. There was a blood trail from the drivers seat of the ambulance and laying there by the open door, a bloody hand print on the window, was the driver. He was dead all right; his throat had been sliced open from claws.

"Julia," a voice bounces around inside my head, making goosebumps rise on my arms. The sound of clicking is followed as I watch Kali step out from the front of the ambulance, her finger dancing around the set of keys. "It really is you."

Jennifer takes a step back as Allison holds her daggers out. "You can't beat her."

"That's why we're going to run," Derek breathes, but Jennifer already knew what to do. She doesn't think twice before turning and running back the way we came, and when I looked back at her, I saw Stiles close the ambulance doors, looking at me through them with great concern. I knew he did the right thing; he had to keep Cora and himself safe.

Kali's eyes glow red before Allison's hands were working fast, extending her arm and throwing her dagger straight at Kali. I could tell by her aim that she wasn't going for a kill shot; rather to slow her down. It was a good thing that Kali wasn't prepared, because when that dagger hit her in the leg, that's the only thing that kept a good distance between us when we turned and ran.

Derek was ahead of us; trying to catch up with Jennifer. My heart pounded in my ears as I ran in front of Allison, trying to keep up with Derek as best that I could. The lights flickered above us as we turned the corner, and that was when my heart literally stopped. I felt like I was in some type of horror movie that never ended; well, I guess my life was a horror movie if you thought about it.

When we turned the corner, Kali was running towards us, and that was when I froze. I didn't know what to do; I just watched her come at us, and I knew that we couldn't run anymore. It was too late by the time I saw that Derek and Jennifer had gotten into the elevator behind us, and it was already closing before I had a chance to get in with them. I finally snapped out of my daze as Allison's hand grabs mine and she tugs me back to where we came.

I hated running. Absolutely despised it. When Stiles had told me he signed me up for the cross country team, I thought he was crazy. But now that I was running for my life in a hospital which had things similar to hurdles, I was thankful that he did sign me up. It sure proved of use.

The moment we turned the next corner however, my blood really did turn cold. It took me a moment to see through the darkness who the figure was standing there at the end of the hall, but I knew that figure from anywhere. It had to be Jade.

She growls lowly as her eyes turn crimson, but I just held the dagger in my hand tighter. I anticipated the idea of using it on her, but that thought was gone before I could even raise my arm to use it. Allison and I had forgotten that we were running from someone as well, so when I was suddenly knocked to the floor, I knew that it was over then.

My vision was fading in and out, and my head was stinging with pain. Kali had to of hit me on the head to knock me down like that, and it really hurt like hell. I feel my eyelids starting to grow heavy as Allison's shouts and screams were suddenly hitting me, causing me to look up and see that Jade had her wrapped in her arms, holding her still as she dragged her away.

I tried to fight to stay awake, but my body wasn't having it. My eyes roll back for a moment, but when they came back into focus, the last thing I saw was Kali's face in mine, reciting her famous line I had heard her speak when she locked me in the vault.

"I hope you're not afraid of the dark."

----------

Visions danced around in my head; but I wasn't sure what was the past, present, or future. That's one of the problems with being a seer. You never know what you're seeing.

"Jade," I hear a toddler's voice speak out, and that was when I knew that it was mine. This was the past; but everything was so blurry in my head. It was hard to see what was happening.

Jade's laughter echoes. "Corey, stop it! You're getting mud in my hair!"

It was then when the vision came into focus. I knew immediately when this was the moment I saw it. This was back when Jade and I were about ten years old, during the summer. There used to be a creek back behind my house before it dried up that we would always play in, most of the time throwing mud or making some type of creations in the dirt.

Jade grabs a handful of mud as it oozes out around her fingers, staining the palms of her hands. She throws it at a younger me as I dodge it barely, firing another mud ball back in return. I hit her in the leg as it splats against her skin, some of it even splashing up on her swimsuit bottoms and top.

She gives me a horrendous look. "Corey Walker! I'm going to murder you!"

I knew that she meant that too; whenever she got angry, I always turned and ran the other way. So, that's what I watched myself do. My face wrinkles up from the pain of running across the rocks, but I didn't care. I was at that age where running across rocks didn't seem to harm you, if that made any sense at all.

Jade runs after me as I turn and start running back through the woods back to my house, pushing branches and leaves out of the way before they smacked my face. I dodged the trees and continued to laugh at the little game of tag, but that was before I turned around to look over my shoulder. I knew what was coming next as I watch myself trip over a log, turning and landing on my stomach.

For a moment, I laid there trying to figure out what exactly had even happened, but the pain had never hit me. What scared my ten year old mind the most was when I looked up to see the face of a deer staring at me, it's tongue lolling out of it's mouth. Flies buzzed around it and the stench hit me as I sat up and scrambled away, eyes wide.

Jade had caught up with me by that point, but she gave up the act of catching me. Instead, she just stared down at the dead deer with me, both of us silent as can be.

Finally, I said, "It's dead."

"Well duh," Jade says back, walking over and picking up a stick. She goes to poke it before I reach out and stop her.

"What are you doing?" I pant, still tired from that run through the woods.

Jade gives me a pathetic look. "Poking it of course."

"Isn't that disrespectful or something?" my frail voice speaks out, making my heart clench for some reason. It felt weird to hear my old voice.

She holds back from poking the deer. "It's a deer, Corey. I think it's too dead to care."

I watch her closely as she pokes the deer in the side, the fur wrapping around the stick before she pulled away. Jade seemed fascinated with the dead animal as I seemed horrified, probably just because I had almost landed on it when I had fallen.

Suddenly, I speak out softly. "How do you think it died?"

Jade throws the stick down as she turns back to me. "Who knows? Maybe it tripped and fell like you."

"Ha ha," I snark back.

She looks back at the deer, her eyes going blank. She's quiet for a long moment, the sound of crickets singing around us filling the silence before she spoke. "What do you think it's like to die?"

My young self stares at her for a long moment, thinking about her question. "I don't know. I heard mom say once when grandpa died that you go someplace afterwards."

"I know that," Jade breathes, still looking at the deer. I had noticed then that it's eyes were glossed over. "But what about the part in-between? What about the pain?"

I take a step forwards, sensing the fear in her tone. "Does it matter now? We'll find out someday."

Jade's head jerks towards me then, her eyes staring into mine. "I don't want to die, Corey."

"I don't think anyone does," I speak shyly as my eyes trail to the forest floor. "It's just apart of life, Jade."

She looks back at the deer, and just before the vision fades away, I hear her speak softly, something I didn't hear the first time I had seen this situation. Her eyes were soft, and I knew who she was talking about.

"I'd die for you."

Oxogen fills my lungs then as I gasp awake, just now remembering where I was and what had happened. When I flashed my eyes open to figure out where I was and what was going on now, I was met with infinite darkness. Kali was right; I was afraid of the dark.

But what I was scared of more was small spaces.

When my hands left my sides to feel around, I could barely extend them to the side. I felt all around me and realized that I was in some type of box, but it sounded and felt like metal. My hands start banging on the walls around me as I slowly start to go into panic mode, but then I hear a voice: Allison.

"Corey? Is that you?"

It sounded beside me. "Allison!"

"Oh thank God...you're okay," I hear her breathe, but my mind was spinning.

I try harder to see through the dark, but my eyes won't let me. "Where are we!"

Suddenly though, light floods into my small space as I try to look towards it, realizing exactly where I was the moment I looked out. We were still in the hospital, and Allison and I were lying in the places where they keep the dead bodies. When the light stopped burning my eyes, I noticed that there was a figure standing at the end of the box of light, one that I wasn't happy to see.

"Wakey wakey," Kali snarls at me, a smirk on her face. "Duke wants to talk to you."
