21. Ghost
"A ouija board?" Lydia groans as we sit around one of the tables in the Chemistry room. The whole school had evacuated due to the fire alarm being pulled by Cora, so we were alone.
Stiles slams the board onto the table. "Also known as a spirit board. It's worth a shot."
"Maybe," Lydia sighs as Stiles starts to take it out. "But shouldn't we be trying to get Corey and I to harness our powers together?"
I had to admit, I was on Lydia's side with this one. Stiles sets a piece on the board. "Can we just please at least try this? Maybe this will work better than you think."
"Are we all supposed to do this?" Cora says, her eyes lifting to look at us all. I could see how much her and Derek were alike.
Stiles nods his head. "Yeah, we all do."
Lydia rolls her eyes before placing her manicured fingers on the triangle in the middle, the rest of us following her action. I notice Lydia glance at me out of the corner of her eyes, probably wondering if I was getting some type of vision or anything from this, but I wasn't. I was still stuck here.
Stiles takes a deep breath. "Where's Doctor Deaton?"
We all stare at our hands in the middle of the board as we wait for something; anything to give us hope. It took me a couple of moments before I realized that Stiles and Cora were both staring at Lydia and I, Lydia noticing it as well.
She raises her eyebrows. "What?"
"Are you going to answer it?" He sounded as if we could just pull this answer out of thin air.
"Oh, I don't know the answer," Lydia's eyes wander the room before they find me. "I thought we were asking some type of spirit."
Cora raises her eyebrows. "Well, do you know any spirits?"
Lydia groans. "Nah, it's not like there's an ex-spirit standing in the room right here with us now."
I raise my hand slightly, knowing she was talking about me. Cora looks at me then. "Well, do you know the answer? I thought you could see visions?"
"I can," I state the obvious. That was one of the only reasons why I was even in here. "It's complicated, though. I can't control what I see and when I see them. I'm pretty sure it's when I come into contact with someone or with an object, but they have to be willing to show me their thoughts for me to know. I can't see the future either, which is something we need to find Deaton."
Stiles starts to act frantic. "Wait a minute-what if we had Deaton's keys for you to touch? Would that be able to link you to him?"
I shrug my shoulders. "I guess it's worth a shot. But where are we supposed to get-"
I cut myself off when I see Stiles pull out a set of keys, jingling them in the air. Of course he just randomly had Deaton's keys on him...
My arm extends as I hold my hand out, waiting for him to drop them into my palm. He stares at me intensely as if the moment he dropped them, there would be some type of explosion. I wanted to laugh at him, but this wasn't exactly the right time. He stares at my hand before letting the keys go, the cold metal dropping into my hands.
I expected something; to see Deaton tied to a tree or the worst, seeing him dead, but I didn't see anything. Instead I continued to see Stiles' face, who was still staring at me as if I was on fire. My fingers close around the keys in my hand as I focus on them, trying to pull something out of them. Why wasn't this working?
"It's not working," I say, angry at myself. "Maybe Deaton doesn't want to be found."
"Or maybe the Darach doesn't want you to find him," Stiles fades out, putting the puzzle pieces together. What he said made a lot of sense. There was something about these keys though that I knew were essential to finding Deaton, but I didn't know why.
Cora looks up. "So you're saying that the Darach has the ability to block Corey's ability?"
"Sure. The Darach had the ability to cause the werewolves and Corey to almost commit suicide, so what else can't it do?" Stiles says before plopping himself down into a nearby chair, clearly losing hope fast.
I slam the keys onto the table. "We can't give up. What about me and Lydia?"
"I'm out of ideas," Stiles says, staring at the two of us. It depressed me to see him like this.
My mind starts to work, thinking about any type of connection Lydia and I have ever had. That was when I remembered the first time we met; which was back in the woods when I was dead. She had screamed and I had seen Jade...every time she screamed, I saw something.
My eyes flick to Lydia. "Lydia, do you remember that time you were out in the woods running around uh, naked?"
Lydia's eyes are wide as her jaw clenches. "Corey, why in the hell are you talking about this again."
"Because I was there when you screamed," I say, ignoring her comment. "You had screamed, and you gave me the first vision I ever remember having. You allowed me to see Jade."
Lydia stares at me as she thinks about this as well, but Stiles was standing on his feet first. "Wait, you're saying that with her scream, it kind of boosted your abilities?"
I nod my head. "Yeah, actually. Every time I was around her when she did, I saw something."
Stiles leans across the table towards Lydia. "You need to scream, Lydia."
"What?" she says, furrowing her eyebrows. "No way am I screaming."
Stiles' knuckles turn white. "This is a life or death situation, Lydia, and we're running out of time. You need to scream!"
She looks around. "Are you kidding me? I can't scream here-"
"There's no one here," Cora joins in, finally on board with this plan. "Only we will hear you. No one else."
Lydia looks hesitant, but I could tell that she was finally considering it. "Come on, Lydia. You wanted to know what else we could do, so here's your chance."
After I said this, I could tell that her mind was made up. There was a brief moment of silence as we all watched her carefully, seeing her chest rise from inhaling and her mouth starting to form into a scream. I clutched the keys in my hand hard as if they were the only thing keeping me alive, waiting to be plunged into a vision with the help from Lydia.
When the sound finally came out of her mouth, it pierced my ears. I could tell it pained Stiles' and Cora's as well, causing them to slam their hands to their ears and back away from the table, but I endured the pain. I had faith that Lydia would do this right, and right I was.
Suddenly, I was plunged into darkness as the keys in my hand disappeared. My eyes tried to peer through the blanket of dark to figure out where I was before I hear a mumble behind me, causing me to whip around and see a terrible sight. It was Deaton, hands and mouth tied as he dangled from the celling.
For some reason, I ran to him, thinking I could do something to save him, but then I stopped. My eyes had landed on a symbol on the floor that was now burned into the back of my mind. It was the same one that was carved onto the floor in the bank vault that I had stayed in for two months, meaning that he was here.
I'm snapped from my daze when I look up towards the door of the vault, seeing something that confused me. It was almost like I was looking at a holographic version of Allison and her father step inside, their images appearing and then disappearing. I wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean, but just before the vision goes away for good, I see myself step inside the vault as well, staring straight at me.
"Corey!" I hear Stiles yell my name, causing me to blink. I gasp when I realize that I was back in present time, sitting in the Chemistry room, holding Deaton's keys again. "Did you see something?"
I'm speechless. "Y-Yeah. He's at the vault; the same one Deucalion had locked me in for two months. His hands are tied to the celling, Stiles...he'll suffocate if we wait any longer."
The moment I finished my sentence, Stiles was jumping away from the table and bolting towards the door, probably to go find Scott. I would have followed after him, but I was still trying to recover from the vision I had seen. They always make me feel a little loopy after what I see.
"Damn, your scream packs a good punch," Cora groans as she removes her hands from her ears, her claws extended. I wasn't sure why her claws were out, but I figured it was because of Lydia's scream.
Lydia gulps before grabbing her purse from the floor, staring to flee the room without a word. I wondered what was wrong with her, so I followed after her, stopping her in the hallway by grabbing her arm gently.
She turns and looks at me as I furrow my eyebrows. "What's wrong? You might have just helped save a man today."
"I know," she says.
I shake my head. "Then what's wrong?"
She stares at me for a moment, licking her lips slowly. "What's wrong is me. This...thing that I can do is like a disease, and I want it gone. Yeah, I helped you find Deaton, which is great, but I'm terrified of what I'm capable of doing with this. I hurt Stiles and Cora by screaming, Corey...that's not okay."
"Lydia, if this is about not knowing what you are-"
"I don't care what I am anymore," she sighs, gulping. "All I care about is protecting you guys...from me."
---------
"Can't you drive any faster?" I urge Stiles on as I thump my foot on the floor of the Jeep, feeling Stiles press on the gas pedal harder. We were currently on our way to help Derek, since Scott told us that he could handle Deaton on his own. I only prayed that he could get there in time...along with us being able to get there to help Derek as well.
Cora was sitting in the front seat next to Stiles, perfectly quiet. However, I saw that she was trying her best to keep herself contained. Her knuckles were white as she held onto the door handle, but I didn't blame her. Stiles was driving fast, of course, but an experienced alpha was literally trying to kill her brother right now. I'd be panicked as well.
Allison sat beside me, her hand in my own, trying to comfort me. She had met up with us before we left the school so she could come and help as well, and honestly, we needed all the help we could get. I had faith that Derek could protect himself, but after Cora telling us that they had Jennifer, I was deathly worried that someone wasn't going to make it out alive tonight.
It didn't take much longer before we're pulling into the parking lot for the loft, causing all of us to pile out and literally bolt to the doorway. Stiles waved at Allison and I to go on as him and Cora ran to the electricity room to turn the power back on, the only thing that might help save Derek and buy us some time. So, Allison and I made our way up the stairs, hearing my heart racing in my ears.
When we almost reached the top, I noticed that Allison had daggers in her hand. It was good move for her, mostly so she could protect herself and buy Derek more time, but seeing her weapons made this all seem more real. This wasn't some petty little werewolf fight over him joining the pack; this was life or death.
Only one of them will be stepping out of this alive.
We finally reach the top as Allison stops, looking back at me. Her eyes were full of fear and worry, it made me sick. I kept repeating everything is going to be okay in the back of my mind, but I knew after seeing the look on Allison's face, it wouldn't be. Don't get me wrong, Derek wasn't my favorite person in the world considering what pain he has caused Allison and the rest of her family, but that didn't mean I wanted him dead. He didn't deserve to die.
"Derek!" I hear a scream echo down the long hallway, causing both of our heads to snap towards the sound. We don't even hesitate as we run down the narrow hall, everything feeling as if it was in slow motion. The situation seemed a million times worse when we finally reached the loft, looking inside to see nothing but complete chaos.
The whole floor was covered in water with a few electrical wires running into it, which was a good plan, until they cut the power off earlier. Isaac was sitting there on the ground at our feet by the door when we stepped in, holding onto Jennifer as if she would run away if he let her go. It was strange to see Ms. Blake in such an odd place, but I couldn't think about that right now.
I froze when I saw that Kali, Derek, and Boyd were lying in the water, meaning that Cora and Stiles succeeded in turning the power back on for just a little moment, which did in fact buy Derek some time. I didn't really start to panic until Kali got up off her feet, snarling as she pointed at Derek.
"Hold him."
I looked at Allison to do something, but she stayed perfectly still. My eyes are wide with confusion as the twins run over to Derek and hold him up, displaying his claws as if they were a trophy to Kali. She smirks ever so slightly as she drags Boyd up off the ground, who was barely even moving thanks to the electricity. I knew what was going to happen then.
"Stop!" I scream just before Kali started to lift him up into the air. She looks over at me, a small smile forming on her face. "Please, just stop!"
She shakes her head, raising her eyebrows. "Good, the seer is here. Glad to know you'll be watching this."
I tried to mutter something else, anything else to make her stop, but I was too late. Her hands release Boyd as his body penetrates Derek's claws, going in deep. Everything just seemed to stop then and there as I heard Boyd moan in pain, clearly dying. This wasn't happening...
Kali steps away, looking down at Derek, who was staring at his hands and Boyd in shock. "I'm giving you until the next full moon to join us, Derek." She looks away from him and to me, a sly smile on her face. "And you; take this as a lesson. We won't stop at anything to get you, Corey. I hope you realize that. You'll join us, because if you don't, we'll kill everyone you care about. Remember this moment, Corey. Remember what it feels like to know that you're the cause of an innocent death."
This wasn't my fault, this wasn't my fault.
"Oh, and Jade says she misses you," Kali says as she starts to walk past Allison and I, leaving the room. Her eyes stayed on me like a hawk, but I knew that if they wouldn't have been, I would have taken that dagger from Allison's hand and personally killed her myself. "Might want to expect a visit from her soon."
I wanted to say something, but I couldn't. Instead, I just watched with tears in my eyes as Kali and the twins walked right past me, as if they didn't do a single thing wrong. This wasn't fair; Boyd didn't deserve this. He was innocent; he didn't deserve to die. He was just in the crossfire of this terrible battle.
I looked back over at Derek and Boyd, seeing that Derek had dropped him to the ground as he stared at his hands. They were shaking terribly as he stared at the blood, but that was when it hit me.
Boyd was dead.
I knew deep down this was Kali's fault, but I couldn't help but think it was mine as well. If I could have learned how to see the future, I could have saved his life. He could be alive right now, and maybe Kali would be in his place. But I didn't, and for that, I blamed myself.
I hear Stiles and Cora run in behind us then, hearing Cora gasp before running over to Boyd, burying her face into his chest as she cried. I knew that she didn't know Boyd very well, but he was apart of her pack. I knew that it hurt like hell when they lost a member.
A slick tear falls from my eye when I feel Allison grab my hand, looking at me as she cried as well. I didn't know what to do, so I crashed into her as she buried her head into my neck, letting out soft sobs. I knew that I was helping comfort her, but being in her arms helped keep me together. Instead of continuing to cry, I turned all of my sadness into anger.
Kali wasn't going to get away with this. I'll make sure of that.
----------
Aye, longer chapter than usual.
God, Kali is such a bitch though, isn't she? For real though, does anyone low-key think that maybe Kali was Tracy's mom...I mean, they are pretty damn similar and we never got to see Kali's mom either. Idk, this is what I wonder when I watch old Teen Wolf episodes.
So so sad that Boyd died. He didn't deserve it at all and I hate the way it happened. Derek will always have his blood on his hands, and that is something that he doesn't deserve. Why can't my cinnamon rolls just stay alive and be happy? Is that too much to ask?
Vote and comment though, amigos!
