08. Vulnerable
Jade hasn't said a single thing to me yet. The moment Allison had put two and two together she pleaded for Mr. Harris to switch the partnerships around, but he kept his foot planted. I never thought I'd hate a man that much in my life before. He's a close tie next to Matt.
Our job was to restock the soda machines; one of the most lamest jobs in existence. Sure, you could snatch a soda real quick without anyone noticing, but it was a tiring process. My back was already starting to hurt, but the worst part about it was that Jade was next to me helping me do it, making me dread the job even more. I prayed that she wouldn't say anything to me, but of course not all prayers are answered.
I notice her glance over at me out of the corner of my eye. "I'm sorry for pushing you down back at the vault. It wasn't intentional-"
"Save it," I snap back quickly, not wanting to hear another damn apology. "I get it, you're sorry. You won't ever be able to say that enough to where you actually mean it."
She stops what she's doing, grasping a mountain dew can in her hand. "Corey, why can't you realize that I didn't have a choice for any of this to happen? I couldn't control it-"
"I saw you kill that girl," I grit, stopping what I was doing as well as my eyes glare at her. "I saw what you did, Jade. Yeah, maybe you didn't have a choice, but you enjoyed it. You enjoyed taking her life, and you can't deny that."
Jade's eyes smooth over, like the calm before a storm. "You wouldn't understand, Corey. Being a werewolf...it's different. Especially when you first turn. You can't think straight and you feel as if your skin is on fire all of the time. When Kali made me do that, it was like a temporary relief—like I acted on pure instinct."
I slam the soda can in my hand down on the table next to me. "You're right, I don't know what it's like to be a wolf. Sure, you were forced to do what you did, but you still did it, Jade. None of those things effect what you did. That girl..."
"That girl wasn't innocent either," Jade snaps back at me, the storm finally returning to her eyes. "Kali tracked her down, knowing that it would be easier for me to kill someone who deserved it. That girl was a murderer, a liar, and most importantly, she threatened the lives of many others."
A little laugh escapes my throat. "Are you even listening to yourself? You're accusing someone of murder when the real murderer is standing right in front of me."
Jade's eyes flash red for a moment, indicating that she was starting to lose it, but I didn't care. She knew everything I was saying was the truth. "You know, Corey? You're right. I won't ever be able to earn your trust back again, and I deserve it. The only thing I ask of you is to remember. Remember all of the laughs we used to have; the times we stayed out too late...don't you remember? We're best friends Corey. You can't change that."
My mind starts to let all of the memories back in, but soon I'm stopping. I knew what she was doing; playing the pity card. "I can't do that, Jade, I'm sorry. I can't remember how you--we, were, and you know that. I can't try and remember the person you used to be, because she's long gone now. We won't ever be the same again, so don't ask me to think back to those moments. It only makes me wish that things had happened differently."
Jade stares doe eyed at me before her look turns sour. "Fine. I get it. Just don't come crawling to me when Deucalion takes everything from you and your friends. I won't be able to stop it."
"What are you talking about?" I say, furrowing my eyebrows. "What is Deucalion here for exactly?"
Jade is hesitant to say anything, but something possesses her to. "You mostly. He wants to add more members to his pack, alphas-"
"Derek," I fade out, putting the pieces together.
She nods briefly. "And you already know how that works."
I was confused for a moment, but then I remembered how everyone else had gotten into the pack—by killing their own pack. If Deucalion is here for Derek, then he's going to make him kill everyone he cares about. Plus he's here for me, and that means he'll go for who I care about most. And at the top of that list is Allison.
My hand reaches out and grabs her bicep before my brain processes what I'm even doing. "If you or anyone else even lays a finger on Allison, I'll-"
"What, Corey? You can't do anything," she snarls back at me, glancing down at my hand. "Face it. You're powerless compared to the rest of us. You're weak."
Rage builds inside me. "No, I-"
I stop short when I see something around her neck; a necklace. The part that made me stop was what was on it, which happened to be a little symbol Allison had showed me awhile back. It was a necklace Kate had given to her; the one that related to her heritage. But here it was...dangling around Jade's neck.
"Why do you have that?" I grit, fire raging behind my eyes.
Jade looks down at the necklace, a little smile forming on her face. "Oh, I found it somewhere. It's very vintage."
Jade pulls her arm away from me. "That's Allison's-"
"I know," she grins, knowing this was tearing me up inside. The thing about it all was that that necklace had been in Allison's room, tucked away. The fact that Jade had it meant that she was in her house, going through her things. "I figured she wouldn't want it anymore. After all, it was her psychotic aunt that gave it to her."
My hand bawls into a fist before my hand is reaching for the necklace, clasping around the metal part before pulling it off. She glares at me and growls lowly, but I take a step back as I hold onto it tight, not daring to even let her try and take it back. I knew the necklace didn't mean anything to Allison, but Jade having it infuriated me. I wouldn't let her keep it.
I started to form words in my throat, but before I could speak them, the setting around me changes. I knew then that I was getting some type of vision, one that I had a feeling wasn't going to be good. But I wasn't touching anyone; how could I be seeing anything?
Suddenly I was standing in a dark closet, the image blurring ever so slightly. My eyes set on one of the shelves before I turn around abruptly, scanning the room to figure out what I was even doing in here. It was then I saw Isaac and Allison standing there, looking as if they were trying to get out but couldn't.
"Isaac, it's okay," Allison says, her voice sounding far away in my mind.
Isaac rests his hands on the doorway, breathing heavily as he slammed his hand against it. "I think something is blocking the door." He beats again quickly as he screams. "Let us out! Come on!"
"Isaac!" Allison screams at him, but he doesn't listen. The last thing I see is Isaac turn around and look at her, his eyes glowing yellow. Either Jade snapped me out of it or I did myself, but the image is gone in the blind of an eye, and suddenly I'm standing back in the hallway next to the vending machine.
My mind spins a mile a minute, trying to process what I just saw. But then it hit me; that wasn't the past, that was now. The present.
"Allison," I breathe before I'm turning and running towards the janitors closet, remembering that Harris had told them to go there. I hear Jade yell something down the hall at me, but I tune her out. All that kept playing in my mind was Allison's scream before I had lost the image.
My feet skid to a halt when I reach the janitor's closet, staring it up and down to see a vending machine placed in front of it. I try to push it out of the way myself, but it wasn't working. Growls and screams come from inside the closet, making my heart race even faster, but I couldn't get the door open.
Suddenly something is pushing me out of the way; no, someone. It takes me a moment to recover when I see Scott standing there, pushing the machine out of the way and swinging the door open. My eyes search for Allison as Scott grabs Isaac and throws him out into the hall, getting him away from Allison.
"Isaac!" Scott screams at him, his eyes flashing yellow as Isaac calmed down, realizing what was actually happening. Allison steps out of the closet holding her arm as I run over to her, demanding to know if she was okay.
She pulls her hand back, revealing a set of claw marks on her wrist. "I'm okay. They're not deep."
Allison's eyes connect with my own, and that was when I saw the fear behind them. For once she couldn't defend herself against a werewolf, and I could tell that she was spooked by Isaac's sudden reaction. Allison stares at me as she shakes her head, looking baffled.
"How'd you know?"
I gulp at this question. "I-I saw it."
Isaac props himself up against the vending machine as Scott stands. "Well now we know that they're here to get someone hurt."
"What are we supposed to do?" Allison says, her chest heaving huge breaths.
Scott smirks ever so slyly. "Now we return the favor."
---------
Scott looks over towards me, nodding his head briefly. We had a plan; one that was sure as hell going to be risky, but none of us cared. They wanted to hurt someone and almost had made Isaac seriously hurt Allison, so I'd risk anything to get back at them. I've never been much of a revenge person, but right now I wanted to make them pay.
I shoot my hand up into the air as a teacher I'd learned as Ms. Blake calls on me. "May I use the restroom?"
She sets the piece of chalk down in her hand as she nods. "Yes, but hurry back."
I nod back at her to indicate I understood what she said. I'm quickly getting out of my seat as the twins stare me down, but I just look over at Scott, seeing that he was practically bouncing in his seat. We both were nervous about the plan, but of more than anything, we were excited.
My strides become longer as I quickly walk down the hall, heading towards the restroom. I barely get to even lay a finger on the door handle before the door is flinging open itself, revealing Allison as she pulls me into the restroom. The door shuts behind me as I scan her up and down, seeing her eyes wide.
"Did you get it?"
She smiles as she pulls out a dagger, one that was essential for our plan to work. "I always keep one stuffed in the back of my locker."
"You better hope no one else finds that in your locker someday," I laugh. I take it from her hands as I use it to cut a few holes in my shirt and pants, making sure not to make contact with skin. I hand it back to her as she tucks it away, her expression going serious.
Her brown eyes search my face. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
My hands have a mind of their own as they reach out and take her hands, rubbing them softly. "Of course I want to do this. They hurt you."
Allison looks down at the scratch marks. "That's apart of being human in Beacon Hills...always getting hurt."
"It won't happen again," I say sternly, meaning those words. I couldn't imagine the twins or anyone else hurting Allison on purpose. They'd have to kill me before they ever get to do something like that.
Allison smiles faintly before she looks down at her watch. "It's been a minute. Better get into position."
I nod my head as she starts to walk around me. "Don't hesitate."
She looks back at me. "Trust me, I won't."
Then she's walking out of the restroom, heading down the hall to get into her spot. I feel as if I'm about to puke from nerves, but I push past it. My eyes close as I take a deep breath, repeating in my mind over and over again that this was going to work. It had to.
My hand wraps around the cold metal handle as I exit the restroom, walking a little ways down the hall before stopping in the middle of the hall. I knew that Scott was going to pull through in a minute and I needed to be here exactly for this to work.
It doesn't take long before the door to Ms. Blake's room is flying open, revealing a very ticked off Aiden. I swear his eyes flash red when he sees me, causing him to march over to me. I bite my tongue as I hold my place, eyes hard as stone.
"What did you do to my bike!" He yells at me, but I knew damn well I didn't touch his bike. That was all Allison.
The corners of my lips stretch up slightly. "I think your bike is the least of your problems."
"What are you talking about?" he questions, but it was too late. I hear Allison step out from around the corner as she throws the knife straight for Aiden, having spot on aim. The end of the blade knicks the tip of my ear as it grazes by, heading for Aiden. Either she did that on accident or on purpose to make this look a little more believable, but it didn't matter.
Aiden's hand is quickly flashing upwards as he snags the knife out of the air, stopping it from making contact in his shoulder. He looks accomplished, thinking that he had just stopped our plan, but he was far from wrong. He was doing exactly what we wanted him to do.
"Agh, help!" I scream at the top of my lungs then, making sure to make it sound believable. My knees fall to the ground as I act as if I was crawling away from Aiden, holding my hand against my abdomen. "Get away from me!"
Aiden stares at me with confusion before it clicks behind his eyes, but it was too late. Ms. Blake and the rest of the kids in the classrooms are running out into the hall, seeing the scene in front of them. All they saw however was a twin holding a knife as some new student crawled across the ground with holes in his shirt and blood on his ear. Little did they know that this was all staged.
"Aiden!" Ms. Blake gasps, her eyes wide as she extended her arms. She did it to keep everyone else back in fear that he would go for them.
Aiden takes a look at them and the knife and puts the pieces together. He drops the knife as it clings on the tile flooring, holding his hands up. I gasp, keeping the act going, as I see Ethan glare at me. Of course he knew this was all staged; why else would this be happening?
"This isn't what it looks like-"
Ms. Blake walks over slowly as she takes the knife away, grabbing his hands and walking him down the hall. Everyone in the hall whispers under their breaths as Scott and Allison smile over at me, knowing that it actually worked. Our plan came through, but now it was their turn to act. Allison runs over to me, her eyes wide as tears started to form. If I wouldn't have known none of this was real, I would have believed her.
"Are you okay?"
