Fly 15

Chapter 15 Landmarks

I turned and leapt into the sky, driving my aching wings upward. Dusk filled the air with a pink glow as I looked for a good place to spend the night, while simultaniously trying to keep away from any possible persuit. My fears proved well founded.

The 'vuttavuttavuttavutta' of an approaching chopper gave me just enough warning to land on top of a very tall building before it came into sight. A searchlight flashed from the belly of the chopper, scanning the buildings along it's path as they came into range.

I suddenly had an idea. "Raven!" I yelled over the noise, "climb down onto the ledge!"

"What?! Are you insane! I'll fall to my death!"

"Just do it, okay?!" I yelled. She climbed as quickley as she could down my flank and onto the wide ledge I had perched on.

I made sure she was safe behind a gargoyle before I began to change. I hoped the swirling liquid light wouldn't attract the attention of the chopper drivers.

I became fully human just in time to see the light sweeping toward me. I dove behind the gargoyle just as it washed over the place I had been standing. I froze, and after a moment it moved on. It was then that I noticed where we were.

"Raven! We are standing on the Sears tower!"

We stood up and looked around. "You're right!" Raven said, "We could probably stay the night up here. No one would ever find us. Besides, we can't exactly get down. With all the police sure to be looking for us, it's not safe to move."

"You have a point," I conceded, "But... don't you think it's a little chilly to be up here all night without blankets?"

"Well... you can appear wearing clothes, right?"

"Ahhh, I see what you're getting at!" I stepped back and transformed into a dragon, making sure no helicopters were in sight. Then I laid down and concentrated on becoming human again, this time imagining myself in a sleeping bag. I opened my eyes to see Raven grinning. "You did it!"

I took off the sleeping bag and repeated the process, so we each had a sleeping bag for the night.

We slid them both under the gargoyle's wing, just in case it rained.

"Good night, Raven." I said, sleepily.

"Good night, Fiona."
