Chapter Seven

"Hey!" he said, feigning hurt as he got himself back on his side of the road again, not that it mattered. There was no one else driving. "You're going to owe me for that later."

She laughed. "Just drive."

Kara tossed the unfold map on the back seat. Whoever designed them was a puzzle genius. She wasn't stupid, but she certainly felt like it. How hard was it to fold a damn map? It's a good thing she never tried origami. Her swan would probably look like a toilet. Some of the recruits did it in the spare downtime, said it helped them relax. She was more likely to throw it against the wall in frustration. Her pleasure was beating the heck out of a punching bag. It released all her stored up anxiety and pent up anger.

They rolled into a small town, one way in-one way out, and came across cars blocking an intersection. "They almost look like they were set up that way," Jared said, pulling the vehicle to a stop again. Two cars were touching nose to nose, meeting at the centerline.

Kara looked behind them and saw a side street, pointing it out. "We should be able to go around the block."

Putting the car in reverse, he backed up until he hit the street and then turned down it. Old-style buildings lined the road with wooden paneling; ones that had obviously been up since the early 1900s. No one was out walking, not even the dead. That didn't really sit well with her and obviously not Jared either as his eyes were scanning every direction.

When they reached the next intersection, the way they wanted to turn was also blocked by cars. "Do you think the hummer can push through them?" she asked.

"I don't want to risk us losing our ride." He kept going straight until the next block, but it was the same thing. It was almost like someone didn't want them passing through town. "Looks like we might have to physically try to move them," he said.

"Let's keep driving down and see what happens."

Just then, a gunshot shattered their back window. Kara screamed and ducked. The car swerved as Jared tried to regain control. "Shit! Stay down," he ordered. The Hummer jerked forward as he slammed his foot on the gas.

Her heart thumped hard against her rib cage, and she grabbed a hold of the armrest; her chest almost resting against her legs as she leaned over. "Don't have to ask me twice." Dumb people always wanted to go rogue in the apocalypse. It was hard to believe the number of people that let their evil side dominate. She knew everyone was capable of more evil than they honestly told themselves. She'd seen it. Lived it. And tried like heck to remember the values that she had set for herself after watching her dad flunk parenting.

She chanced a glance in the side mirror and saw a truck driving up on them from behind and a person with a gun leaning out the window. Nerves rattled around in her belly. They had to get out of this. She had to get home to her baby. She wasn't going to let anything stop her. Reaching around behind her seat, she grabbed the only rifle that they brought along with them. "Keep her steady."

He glanced over at Kara and then down at the weapon in her hand. "What are you doing?"

"What do you think I'm doing?" she replied, as she undid her seat belt to slide into the back seat. The back window was already toast, so if she got to the back she could easily aim for one of their tires. If Jared wouldn't have been concentrating on his driving, weaving in and out of obstacles, she was certain he would have argued with her. And at that moment, she kind of wished he'd do something because it would take her mind off the acid churning in her gut. She didn't want to shoot anyone.

Crawling through the car, she made her way to the backseat and slid the barrel of the gun over the backrest, keeping her head as low as she could, but still high enough that she could see. Jared turned sharply as the other car shot at them again, and she found herself sprawled over the back seat. The bullet hit the upper taillight of the Hummer.

"Now," he shouted.
