Chapter Four

Jared hit the gas and plowed right into him, knocking him down. The impact jarred Kara, tossing her forward and backward like a ragdoll, and side to side, as the car ambled forward over top of the man, making a sick crunching sound. She slapped a hand over her mouth, her stomach rolling. She searched for a bag in the car, as her stomach rolled, but came up empty. "Stop the car."

"Let's just clear this stretch of road first."

"Stop the car. Now!" she cried, opening her door before he even pulled it to a complete stop. Jumping down, Kara ran to the side of the road by the ditch and lost the remains of her breakfast...so much for the delicious bacon. She scrunched up her nose as she looked at the chunky mess.

Jared approached her and pulled a few strands of her hair back that had fallen in front of her face. She welcomed the help as another gut-wrenching heave took over her body. "We killed him," she cried, her body trembling.

He crouched down beside her, rubbing her back. "It's okay, hun. He was already dead."

"How do you know?"

"You can't tell me you didn't see his jaw just about touching the ground."

Kara sat down and wiped her mouth on her sleeve. "You could have warned me."

He stood up and held out his hand. "I did. I said hang on."

"Like that helped," she said, sticking her tongue out at him as he helped her up. As they were about to walk back to the car, a loud scream made her jump. On the far side of the field beside them, they saw a woman running with a group running after her. Kara couldn't tell if they were alive or dead as they were too far away.

Jared raced back to the Hummer and pulled out his weapon. "Wait here. I'll go help her."

"I'm not letting you do it by yourself."

"Are you ready for more of that?" he asked, pointing to their latest roadkill.

She wasn't, but she promised to protect civilians, and she was going to do that. Her feelings be damned. Kara grabbed her sword off the back seat and pulled out her gun. "Let's do it!" They raced across the field, the grass up to their knees. She didn't think about what might be in the grass. She just focused on what was ahead, following after Jared.

One foot in front of the other, she kept watching the woman. When she stepped out with her right foot, something grabbed a hold of her ankle, and she yelled out in surprise as she fell forward. Her pistol flew out of her hand as she tried to catch herself. Suddenly, a head appeared in the tall grass, his teeth snapping. But all she could see was her dad's eyes all over again. He reached out and grabbed her leg.

"Kara!" Jared raced back to her side. He grabbed the zombie by the collar and drove his knife into its temple before kicking it to the side. Dropping to his knees beside her, he examined her ankle. "Are you okay?" he said, running his hand along her calf, feeling for a wound.

She froze in place, staring at the creature that used to be a human as her father's voice rang in her ear. "You're dead to me."

"Kara?" Jared asked, gently brushing her hair back from her face. "Come on, hun. Talk to me."

The tears she fought so hard to suppress filled her eyes. She didn't want to cry, not in front of him. Not now. Pushing his hands away, she scrambled to her feet and looked around, trying to get her bearings. "We have to help—" Her words were swallowed as another scream pierced the air. They watched as the group of zombies took down the woman they had wanted to help.

She took a step in her direction, but Jared pulled her back. "We can't do anything for her now. We have to go before it's too late."

"We can't give up now." Kara pulled out her sword and spun it in a circle.

He put a hand on top of her head and turned her to face the roadway. "Look, if we don't get back to the car, we'll be traveling on foot."

Her eyes focused on another group of zombies making their way down the road. She glanced back at the other group and knew that if the two merged, they'd be in trouble. "Damn it!" she muttered. Leaving someone behind didn't sit well with her, but she knew that these things could move fast and before they realized it, they could be trapped.

Jared took her hand and they raced back through the field, keeping watching for anything in the grass this time. Thankfully, they had already created a trail from their journey in so it wasn't too hard to see what was ahead of them this time.

"Run," he yelled.
