Chapter Eight

Taking her aim, she focused on the tire. "Can you go to the right a little? I can't get a good shot."

And cool as a cucumber, he did as she asked and she took her shot. Pieces of rubber flew everywhere and their vehicle spun out, hitting a hydrant on the side of the road.

"Yes! Suck on that, assholes," she yelled.

"I love that sassy mouth of yours," Jared said, laughing as he turned the next corner, which surprisingly was clear of cars.

Kara slipped her way back to the front seat and put her seatbelt on. It felt good to do her part. And the best part of it was that she kept everyone alive in the process, which was hard to do these days. It's one of the reasons she hated leaving the base. She may have fighting skills that rivaled the best, but killing someone wasn't something she enjoyed.

Soon, they made their way through the blockades and were back out on the highway, with only a broken window and light for their trouble. She let out a sigh of relief, resting her head back against the seat. "I don't get people like that."

"Could just be protecting their territory," he said, giving them the benefit of the doubt.

"Then why not wait until they see us doing something and then attack? No, that was a trap," she said with certainty. It made her curious to see what they wanted from them. But she couldn't let herself get distracted.

"Well, we made it through and are on our way again."

The rest of the trip remained uneventful, and she couldn't help but smile when the sign for Vancouver came into view. Their first stop was going to be at the house to see if her family was still there, but she highly doubted it. There was a mandatory evacuation. But, of course, Shawn wasn't known for listening to anyone.

"What's the best road to get to your place?"

"104th."

She was even happier to finally see the turnoff sign for Surrey. They were so close now.

"We'll have to stop and get gas somewhere before we leave," he said, glancing down at the dash. "We're almost out."

"I hadn't thought of that," she said, chewing on her bottom lip. There hadn't been any gas deliveries for a long time.

"We'll siphon some if we have to, but I'd rather not do it in the city."

She didn't want to either as the undead ruled the cities now. And Surrey was a pretty dense area. "Turn right here," she said, just after they passed a gas station. She guided him to a row of townhouses; one that she had lived in for over 6 years. It wasn't the fanciest place, but it was home. Shawn's car was still in the driveway, and the door was closed. That made her frown, but everything looked secure so they had that going for them at least.

"I don't like this," Jared said, scanning their surroundings. "Let's get in and out of here quickly because the Hummer's engine probably attracted some attention.

Kara grabbed a walkie talkie. "Stay here and keep watch. Let me know if you see anything."

"I'm not letting you go in alone."

She pointed to the door. "The door is intact and the window isn't broken. I think it will be okay." The only thing she didn't understand was why his car was still here. There were no buses transporting people, so if he stayed behind and risked her daughter's life, she was going to kill him herself.

Pulling the keys out of her pocket, she walked up to the door and tried the handle. It was locked. Kara unlocked the door, opened it, and stepped inside, gripping her sword with her left hand.

"Selena," she called softly. "Are you here?"

Her heart was pounding so loudly that she was afraid she'd miss her daughter's soft tender voice. A second later, there was a sound of something hitting the ground in the living room. She reached for her sword just as a tiny head poked around the corner.

"Mommy?" Selena whispered, her eyes widening. When she realized it was her, she raced down the hall, jumping into Kara's arms.

Kara pulled her into a hug. "Oh, sweetheart. I'm so happy to see you." She breathed in her baby girl's sweet scent and suddenly all was right in her world. Leaning back slightly, she examined her daughter. "Are you okay?"

Selena nodded, tears falling down her cheeks. She wrapped her tiny arms around Kara's neck and held her close, burying her face in her shoulder.

"Where's Daddy?" Kara asked.

"Upstairs with Becca. Shhh," Selena said, holding her fingers to her lips. "They're napping."

"They are now, are they?"

Why didn't that surprise her? He talked about Becca a lot before everything went down. Wonderful this. Wonderful that. How she was willing to stay late hours to finish her work and would never leave her family for weeks as she did, even though he never told her not to go.

But Kara thought that once he left the company where Becca had been employed, he wouldn't talk about her anymore. That he would focus on Selena and keep her safe. Not leave her alone for a long period of time and risk her life. What if it wouldn't have been Kara attempting to get inside? Instantly she saw red, as though a matador was waving a cape at her.

"Please go into the living room, honey. I'll be down in a moment and then we'll be leaving."

Her daughter bounced her way into the living room, and then sat down to play with her toys again. Kara walked to the staircase, her insides bubbling like a cauldron. Why the heck had he not evacuated? And what the hell was he doing with someone else? "That lying cheating bastard!" she growled under her breath.

Quietly she made her way up the stairs, having turned her radio down as to not alert Shawn. When she made it to the top, she could hear his moans. A moan he only made when he was about to orgasm.

She grabbed the handle and slammed open the door, and found him standing there with his pants pulled down and the woman kneeling in front of him, his cock in her mouth. His mouth dropped open, and he shoved Becca away, knocking himself off balance. He toppled to the ground, his legs tangled in his underwear and pants.

"This isn't what it looks like," he said, covering his cock with his hands as she twirled her sword.

She walked over to him, and ran the tip of the sword across his abdomen, stopping just above his hands. "I want you to listen carefully because I'm only going to say this once, and maybe, just maybe, I'll let you keep your manhood."

He nodded his head frantically.

"Considering you care more about getting laid than keeping our daughter safe, I am leaving and taking her with me." He started to protest, but she moved the sword lower. "And you are not going to follow us. Do you hear me?"

"What was I supposed to do? I thought you were dead. It's been weeks since we've heard from you."

"If you would have gone to Green Haven like you were supposed to, you would have been able to contact me. But you didn't. Instead, you stayed here to get your jollies with Becca. Did you think I didn't know about her before? The late nights at work. The hotel receipts in your pocket. It's no wonder you never wanted to have sex when I came home. God! I don't know why I stayed with you for this long."

"Because no one else would put up with your—" She pressed the tip of the sword between his hands covering his manhood. He let out a squeak.

"You might want to rethink finishing that sentence. I'm going to let you go, but if you think about coming after us or coming to Green Haven, I'll make you wish you hadn't." She wasn't going to let anyone walk all over her anymore.

"You're psycho," he growled.

"No. I'm faithful. But from this moment forward, you are dead to me. And you can be rest assured, that tonight, I'll be in someone else's arms."

And she was. Jared made sure of that.
