Chapter 3 - The Truth
Tobias POV
I just finished going down the zip line to spread Tris' ashes. My heart is still pounding. I hear Christina say 'Oh! Zeke's on his way!’ We make a circle and grab each other's arm. Zeke falls out of the sling and his shoulder hit our arms, hard.
"That was nice. Want to go again, Four?" He asks me.
Without hesitation I answer, "Absolutely not."
I start to leave but then Matthew comes over.
"Hey Four," he says.
"Hey"
"I need to talk to you, alone."
"Um, ok." I point over to an old, abandoned building, wondering what he wants to say. He nods his head and I yell out to the other. “We’ll catch up with you guys later." I get shouts and nods in reply. Matthew and I walk over to the building. "Yes?" I ask him, my voice full of curiosity.
"Ok. Um, don't get mad when I tell you this."
"Why would I get mad? Is there a reason I should get mad?"
"Well, um."
"Just spit it out already! I haven’t got all day!" My temper was starting to boil and all I got in reply was a murmur. "What was that?"
"Tris is alive. She never died."
"WHAT!" I shout. "And you're telling me this, two and a half years after she died. We just spread her ashes. I saw them burn her. Those ashes were definitely hers. You're lying. As much as I want to believe you, she's dead. She survived the death serum and then David shot her and she died."
"That's what you think. She had a twin sister. The day after you arrived we injected Tris with serum so that she was unconscious and replaced her with her twin. Tris was taken into a secret part of the Bureau so that they could take a closer look at her DNA. They knew she wouldn't let them do it willingly. David shot Tris's twin and she died, not Tris. It was her twin's ashes you spread today. Tris has been in a coma for two and a half years but woke up yesterday. David called me so I would know. He told me not to tell anyone but I couldn't keep it from you. Today seemed like a good day to tell you."
"The day I thought she died would have been a good day to tell me!" I yell. My temper was now rising. Everything Matthew said fitted into place but he's a scientist. He's had two and a half years to think about this scenario. Make it fit in perfectly with what actually happened.
"I wasn't sure if she was alive. The serum hadn't been tested before and I didn't want to raise your hopes."
"So you didn't tell me!" I lunge at him but he steps aside and I fall flat on the floor. An amateur mistake that I shouldn't have made. Matthew stands on top of me so I can't get up. I taught that move. Now, I'm regretting it.
"It seemed like the best option. Now, could you not tell anyone? I'm not even supposed to tell you but if everyone knew I would be in big trouble."
"You want me to keep this from them? Are you nuts? Their friend who they thought was dead is alive and you want me to keep it from them?"
"Yeah, that would be nice. But something in your tone tells me you’re not."
"No, I'm not."
"I could take you to her."
"You could?" My temper was cool down and curiosity was taking its place. Could Tris really be alive?
"Yeah. But you wouldn't be able to tell anybody else."
"Ok. Just take me to her." He gets off my back and helps me up. We start walking to the Fence. I stop. "What am I going to tell the others? They're going to be wondering where we are?"
"Just tell them you've gone back to your apartment. You aren't feeling too well." That idea came too easily. Maybe he was just making the story about Tris up. But I had to at least try.
"What if they decide to pay a visit?"
"Tell them you don't want to see them. You want some time to yourself to mourn."
"Ok." We continue to walk. Matching our paces perfectly. Only one think is going through my head.
Tris is alive.
