A Chance for Redemption

Bright blue light lit up their quaint little corner

Devola(left) and Popola(right), twin android sisters, took off the protective facemasks they wore. There was a low whine as they powered the tools they held in their hand and set it aside.

"Well...that's the arm," Devola commented as she eyed the biped machine laying on a bare table. "One part down, two more parts to go."

Popola shook her head. "You know we didn't have to do this. That android supplier we spoke with was more than happy to supply us with parts."

"And have him fleece us of everything?" Devola pointed out, picking up her tool again to work at the skeleton of the biped. "No. Absolutely not! I am sick and tired of those....those-grah!"

With a cry, Devola tossed her work tool aside. It landed a fair distance away and thankfully did not break. The redhead was quickly attended to by her sister, a calming hand placed on Devola's shoulder. The twins glanced at each other, pain present in their eyes. At best, they were treated by their fellow androids with contempt. At worse, had slurs and insults thrown their way. Between the two, Popola preferred the spiteful ones. At least they didn't try to hide their aggression by passivity. It was a stroke of good luck that Anemone took them in.

The others didn't even want the both of them close.

It....it was understandable.

For their crimes. For their failures.

Popola scooted closer to Devola as she engulfed her twin sister in a tight embrace. Devola returned it, calming down in the presence of her sister.

"I hate it..." Devola whispered into Popola's shoulder.

"I know, sis. I...I hate it too," Popola whispered back. She reared back, eyes shining at her sister. "Do you even remember what we did?"

Devola tried to remember. "No matter how hard I try...it's still fuzzy. All I remember is...a book...and..." Heavy emotion choked Devola as she continued to speak. Popla simply hugged her sister again.

"At least you remember. I...I don't," Popola whispered.

Devola laughed but it was hollow. "I'm not sure if remembering it is a good thing."

As Popola was about to reply, the twins heard a knock against metal. They turned to their doorway to see a resistance android stand. Even despite the googles he wore, they both could see the contempt in his eyes.

"Anemone wants to...see you," the android sounded as if he was forcing himself to speak those words, incomprehension as to why their leader would want the services of Devola and Popola.

Devola recovered herself as she crossed her arms at the android. "If this is about me beating up that merchant, he was also trying to skim off the Camp too! I did Anemone a favour!"

"It's not that. Just...just go see Anemone. It is important," The android said with finality before walking off, grateful in no longer speaking with the two. Devola simply huffed as her walked away.

"Let's go, Devola. It could be important," Popola suggested. Her twin snorted.

"Last time Anemone said we had something important to do, she simply had us go and recover supplies from the Army of Humanity," Devola pointed out.

"It was important supplies," Popola reminded her sister.

"Whatever. I'm going to bet good money that this will be another mission for us to fetch something," Devola predicted as she made to leave. Popola followed behind her. Immediately, the two noticed that the camp was in a frenzy of activity. Androids were busy hauling boxes with supplies onto a pair of trucks. The twins could easily see that some of the boxes contained weapons and all but power cells? Generators? Was the camp in the middle of moving?

"Well, something important is going on, alright," Popola commented.

"Really? And how would you know that?" Devola asked her sister. Popola smirked.

"We've been walking a good breathe of the camp and we haven't had a single slur thrown our way," Popola pointed .

"Ah...you're right," Devola said, noticing one android pass them by who didn't even pay them a second glance.

"Let's just get to Anemone and see what's going on," she later added as they picked up their pace. With that, they made their way to Anemone's section of the camp and found her hunched over a data-table, a hard-light map of the desert in full display. Their arrival did not go unnoticed as Anemone looked up and turned to see them.

"Ah, Devola, Popola. Morning," Anemone greeted them.

Devola stepped forward. Between her and her twin, she was always the conversationalist. "Anemone. You called for us?"

"We noticed that the camp is being frantic. Are we moving? Is a mission happening?" Popola asked. Just because she was quiet didn't mean Popola would stay out of conversations.

Anemone glanced around over the Twin's shoulder, as if checking if someone was listening. Satisfied that no android was in ear shot, she bid the Twin's to come close. They did so, their eyes glanced over at a particular dot in the desert map.

"What's that?" Devola asked again, eyeing the bright dot on the data-table.

"You two are aware of who Jackass is, correct?" Anemone suddenly asked them, her face far grimmer than usual. A thoughtful expression came over the Twins as they looked back in their memories.

"By Jackass...you mean the Camp's demolition expert?" Devola asked, remembering that raven-haired android that visited their shop one day.

"I remember her. She was one of the few androids who were nice to my twin and I," Popola added. "Did she do something wrong? Did she blow up something she wasn't meant to?"

Anemone smiled slightly, amusement in her eyes. "Well...at least if she had done that, we know what to do. The thing she has done now...it's a bit different."

The Twins leaned in close, curious.

"She recently stumbled onto a bunker in the desert. A massive complex that ran on maso-generators. The problem here is that those generators are on their last legs. Jackass was able to stabilize it but there's only so much she can do with it,"

Ah. The Twins understood it now. Devola was the one to speak it out. "I see....if it's technology based on maso, wouldn't it be best to let our technicians handle it? It's not as if it's particularly difficult for them to not understand."

"Normally, that would be the case. The issue lies in the designs of the generators themselves. It is arcane in its design. I know you two. I know your past. That...is difficult but you are the only two androids around who can grasp at what that technology," said Anemone. Devola and Popola gave the Resistance android a long look.

"What is it you aren't telling us Anemone?" Devola asked, her voice suspicious.

"What my sister means to say is what is so important and hidden that you would need our help?" Popola interjected, her voice gentle than Devola. Anemone gave them a long look before finally sighing. "I am going to transfer something to you to. Prepare for data transfer."

Devola and Popola gave each other a look as they waited for whatever Anemone was going to send them.

A ping rang in their minds as Anemone sent them data.

Their eyes widened.

"We will get to work immediately!" vowed the Twins.
