Leaving
Harry packed up everything he had, which wasn't a lot. He had called Zayn earlier and he agreed to put Harry up for a while.
"How long are you staying?" Zayn asked.
"Just for a while, til I figure things out." Harry said as he packed up his few clothes and his books and laptop into a couple of large duffel bags. This was the only way, he told himself, the only solution.
As he left his place, Harry was compelled to crack open Robbie's door and look in. Robbie was still sleeping on the floor under the throw cover.
Harry stared at Robbie's face, so peaceful and vulnerable. Robbie moaned in his sleep, the same sound he made when they were having sex. Moaning Harry's name, driving him wild. Harry hadn't meant to sleep with him but his hormones decided for him. The more he touched Robbie, the more he wanted. He literally couldn't get enough. For a moment Harry weakened. Robbie had the face of an angel. An innocent seductive angel.
One that hid secrets and caused him nothing but trouble. He turned and left. This was the right thing to do.
Harry packed his things into the back seat and the trunk of his car and drove over to Zayn's. He should have done this a long time ago. Best decision he ever made, he told himself. When he pulled up to Zayn's building, his friend was waiting for him on the curb. He helped Harry with his bags upstairs.
"Okay," Zayn said once they settled in the living room with a couple of beers. "Tell Uncle Zayn what happened?" They were sitting side by side.
Harry told him about his grade situation and his new and exciting distraction, Robbie.
"See?" Zayn said once Harry was done. "What did I tell you?"
"You're giving me the 'I told you so' aren't you?" Harry said. "I don't blame you, I would too."
"Didn't I warn you about that kid?" Zayn turned around to face him. "I told you he was trouble but you did him anyway."
Harry sighed, still amazed at his recklessness. "I know, I know."
"You are so lucky the old man didn't find out." Zayn shook his head and took a swig of beer. "That's beyond trouble."
Harry ducked his head. "Um, actually. . ."
Zayn slammed his beer bottle on the coffee table. "Are you serious? Kay knows? And you're still standing?"
"He almost caught us one day," Harry said polishing of his beer. "We were in the hotel restaurant holding hands and he just swooped in on us."
Zayn shook his head in disbelief. "Haz, what's going on with you? This isn't like you. What happened to the guy who likes to play it safe and just get his degree?"
Harry thought about that while he held onto Liam's cross necklace that he started wearing again recently. At the moment it felt like a security blanket, a symbol of who he used to be. Safe, predictable, dull. Before Robbie. Before Harry knew what pleasure really was, to feel alive.
"I don't know." he said.
Robbie left the school feeling frustrated. The people there were absolute morons he thought. His questions to them were very simple. "Do you know Harry Styles?" and "Do you know where he is?" No one knew anything. Those that did couldn't tell him because of some stupid school policy.
Bloody idiots.
Feeling dejected, Robbie went over to his father's office. As usual the old man was in yet another meeting. One of his minions let him wait in his office.
Robbie sat in his father's chair behind the big desk. It reminded him of the times back in England when he was little and Father would bring him to the office and let him sit in his big chair behind the desk. It seemed comforting right now. Not as much as lying in Harry's strong arms, feeling his warmth.
Where was Harry? Robbie couldn't understand it. Harry had made the most passionate love to him, then disappeared. Robbie replayed last night's events. Harry seemed to enjoy himself immensely. When it was over, Harry had rolled onto his back and lay there with his arm draped over his eyes. Robbie laid close with his head on Harry's chest listening to his heart and breathing as they returned to their normal pace.
He never said a word.
Robbie noticed earlier, when Harry came in, how he resisted him and wouldn't look him in the eye. Harry did try to tell him something before, but Robbie stopped him.
Robbie didn't want to hear what Harry had to say. He had a good idea of what was on his mind.
Harry wanted to break it off with him.
"Robert."
Father's voice brought Robbie out of his thoughts as he came into the office. "How are you? Everything okay?" He had grabbed a couple of file folders from the top of his desk and was already at the door. "I have a couple of meetings, so I'm afraid I won't have time for you today."
Of course he didn't. "It's okay, Father." Robbie picked up a pen and started tapping it against the desk. "No big deal."
"I'm really sorry, it's been busy lately," father said. "Why don't you go find some friends to hang with."
"Do you know where Harry is?" Robbie asked, still playing with the pen. "I can't find him anywhere."
"Harry?" Father looked like he was trying to remember. "Oh right, he has the rest of the week off. Family emergency I think."
"Oh." Robbie looked disappointed.
"Nothing wrong I hope?"
"No," Robbie sighed and threw the pen back on the desk. He rose to leave. "No biggie. I have to go."
"We'll have dinner later in the week," Father said. "I'll call you and let you know."
"Sure." Robbie tried to force a smile. "See you later."
Robbie left the building. He stepped into a rushing crowd. Jesus, people everywhere. He tried to dodge them. He still couldn't get used to the fast pace of this city. The chill in the air was tough enough.
Robbie walked along the crowd while wrestling with a new reality.
Harry dumped him.
Robbie shook his head. He didn't want to face the cold hard facts but he had to. Family emergency my ass, he thought. First of all, he knew for a fact that Harry's family was still in England. Second, he would need more than a week to go all the way across the pond, tend to his "family emergency" and then come all the way back. And naturally his father was too busy to notice that.
Harry dumped him. He spent the night with Robbie for one last roll in the hay before packing up and disappearing out of his life.
Harry dumped him.
Harry never wanted him in the first place, Robbie realized. Harry had been fighting the idea of them being together since day one. He never wanted him.
Robbie could feel the pain brewing in his gut, burning in his chest. He wanted to go to the bar and drink it away. Better yet he wanted to get some good stuff and get so wasted that he couldn't even remember his own name. He wanted to forget everything. Harry, the pain, the loneliness, London, him. . .
Who was he kidding? Harry was in his head, his heart and his soul. There was no way Robbie could close the door on Harry.
Where are you, Harry, he thought. I will find you. If it kills me.
