prologue
Jill woke up early, as she was used to, and quickly made breakfast for herself before heading off to school. Her days had been the same since she had started school after break. Get up, eat, go to school, practice, sleep, repeat.
She liked it though. Some kids at her school were off doing drugs or partying till midnight. At least her life was stable. Her grades were good because she didn't distract herself with TV or Video games too much. Her friends at school were always going on about Wattpad and different animes they enjoyed.
But she didn't care much for any of it. Volleyball was just a pastime as well. A sport to help her stay focused and stay fit, nothing more. Her teammates hated that she thought that. The told her she should use her height to her advantage and to play with passion.
She wasn't the tallest on the team though. She definitely wasn't the strongest either. She was pretty fast but she never lasted very long. And it didn't bother her in the slightest.
Jill was the kind of girl who didn't care much about what went on around her. It had been like that for ages. And it would be for years to come.
Only, there was one problem with that.
While walking home as she did everyday after volleyball practice she heard someone, a teammate may be call out. In a momentary lapse of judgement she turned around, her feet still facing the opposite street.
The girl was Jessica, the volleyball team’s setter. She was smart and popular with a boyfriend and good grades. Her hair was long and pretty and she was rather tall as well.
“Jill you left your keys in the locker room!” Jessica waved the simple key chain in the air, her smile bright and expression light.
Then it all went bad.
Jessica’s easy going expression morphed into horror as a loud engine roared to life. Jill turned just in time to see the speeding pickup about to slam straight into her.
“JILL!!”
The truck came to a harsh stop. Jill slid down the front of the truck. Something warm, blood maybe, was pouring into her eyes, her head pounded and her chest felt like she had been sat in by an elephant. She wheezed as the truck door slammed and a man was at her side.
“Miss! Miss stay awake! Do you hear me? I need you to stay awake!” The man shook her shoulders harshly and soon Jessica joined.
“Jill stay awake! Help will be here soon! Jill!” The girl was sobbing into her as people began to gather.
Somewhere far off she could hear sirens, the paramedics were coming. She wondered if maybe her mother would be one of them. After all, who else inspired her the most to be a doctor?
But she never found out. The breath caught in her throat, blood began to pour in and she struggled to breath. She was choking on her own blood. She was dying.
