The first incident (Millie)
There is an excited buzz flowing through the garage however I am not feeling it. I am currently working on the car that belongs to Michael Schumacher. I am worried because the problem is not readily showing itself. I have the added bonus of being Michael's lead mechanic so I am on the chopping block if I can't fix the issues. How a brand like Ferrari could produce a piece of junk is beyond me. The good thing is I have a team of mechanics behind me.
"Maybe it's a design flaw," one of my teammates remarks.
"I think if it was we would have picked it up during preseason testing," I shut down the idea. Michael is one of those drivers that push the car in testing. Why do I end up with the issues? I put it down to the fact that Michael is more aggressive than his teammate. We are able to locate the issue with enough time to fix it. I am relieved. The relief won't last for long. We still have a race to get through.
"Millie is the car ready?" Michael pulls me out of my thoughts.
"I believe my team and I have fixed the issue but I would hold back until the timed laps if I were you," I informed him. I realise that I am not qualified to give Michael advice but I can't help it. It isn't even good advice because Michael is the kind of driver that will push no matter what. Michael gives me a nod which signifies that he has understood where I am coming from. After my confirmation, it doesn't take long for Michael to get ready. I am quick to gesture for him to leave the garage. I am a little nervous. There is a lot that could go wrong if the issue flares up. I can feel the tension rise as we wait for Michael to complete the required laps. Thankfully he is quick enough to get through without any issues. He is quick to pull himself out of the car. He seems content with the job that I have done.
"Hey Millie, thank you for fixing the car," Michael remarks as he pulls his balaclava off.
"I was only doing my job plus I had a team helping me," I retort. There is nothing worse for me than getting credit when it was a team effort. I suppose I will have to grin and bear it as I am his lead Mechanic. It is the day after and the excitement for the first race has reached its climax. I am even feeling some excitement. It is due to the fact that it looks like everything is fixed for now. We shall see when the race gets underway. Right now I am checking on the car while I wait for Michael to get ready.
"Millie, I think you should relax," Michael remarks, making me flinch. He is right but I am the only person standing between him and serious injury or even death.
"Only when the race is done. Plus I wouldn't sneak up on your mechanic" I snap. Something tells me that the remark I made is going to foreshadow upcoming events. I am quick to offer my hand to help Michael into the car. After double-checking things, I am sent away with a muffled thank you. I gesture for my small team to join me. I take my position at one of the two remaining seats on the pit wall. Thankfully it doesn't take long for the race to start. Michael is soon caught out in the turn one chaos. I wince at the nature of the collision. I am praying that the crash hasn't made the problem rear its ugly head again. As the race goes on I am steadily getting more worried. It looks like Michael is struggling to keep the car under control.
"I think I'm going to have to retire. I can hardly keep control," Michael remarks via the radio. Well, that confirms my suspicion.
"Ok if you can try your best to get back to the pits if not find somewhere safe to pull over," Michael's engineer responds. After a tense wait, Michael manages to get the crippled car back to the garage. I am quick to excuse myself from the pit wall. I know I will have a lot of work to do so I have to get started as soon as possible. The work will answer my questions about whether or not the damage is related to the issue. After doing preliminary checks I have come to the realisation that the damage is going to take a long time to repair. For some reason I find myself eavesdropping on the conversation between Michael and the team principal.
"Check the data it will show you it all went wrong when I collided with DC," For some reason, the team principal believes it had to do with the fault that I fixed despite the fact that the data says otherwise.
"I'll have a look then I'll ask Millie," The race principal responds. I know that Michael is right but I will check anyway. It is the least that I can do for Micheal. It doesn't take me long to find the new issue. I am utterly gobsmacked at how he was able to keep control for as long as he did. I am going to have a long night tonight.
"Millie, I need to ask you something," The team principal turns his attention to me. Well, this is going to be interesting.
"Michael was right, it had nothing to do with the previous issue," I responded. At least eavesdropping worked in this case. The team principal seems a little impressed that I knew what he was going to ask. It doesn't take long for him to get the answers he needs from me. With that, I am finally allowed to begin my work. I am a little worried that I won't be able to finish the repair work in time. Well, it looks like I shall be pulling an all-nighter so long as Micheal doesn't have any plans. After four long hours of work, I am finally done. I am about to leave when I am stopped.
"Millie," It's Michael. His announcement catches me off guard. I know he likes to be one of the last to leave but I didn't expect him to wait this long.
"I thought you would be back at the hotel by now," I remarked. Maybe he has something planned.
"Well, I need to say thank you," Michael responds. I am glad that he is the type of driver who respects the support team. I am a little confused at the fact that he could have met me in the hotel lobby.
"And to do that I was thinking I could treat you to a nice meal," Michael fills in the blanks. It's not the first time he has asked a member of the support staff to dinner but it is the first time that he has asked me about it directly. Well, now I have no excuse. I say that because I am normally busy when he tries to ask me.
"This time I have no excuse so sure," I mustered some enthusiasm to accept his invitation. There is just one problem. I am a little tired. I will still try to enjoy myself. It doesn't take long for us to reach a nice restaurant. I am impressed by the nature of the restaurant. It makes me feel a little awkward. It doesn't take long for me to recover from the awkwardness. I guess that I am not used to this. I will definitely try my best to enjoy it.
"Sorry if I have made you feel awkward," Michael apologies for some reason.
"It's not your fault. I'm just not used to being spoiled," I explained. Something tells me that I will have to get used to it.
"Well that's because you are normally busy," Michael teases. His response gets a giggle from me. It is true. It doesn't take long for the food to arrive. With that, I get to work on eating the food. I am hit by a nice flavour.
"Thank you for taking me here," I remarked in between mouthfuls. Something tells me that this may be the last time that I will be enjoying myself for a while.
"No thank you for being a good mechanic," Michael retorts. I am glad that I have ended up with a driver that wants to support me. Well, there is a chance that I might need it. Right now I will have to focus on preparing the car for the next race.
