REVIEWS: Bloggers & Readers

What are bloggers?

[WPMU DEV - what is a blog?]

Bloggers are people who chronicle their experiences. For this particular case, we're talking about people who chronicle their reading life. This is a catch all term for anyone who talks about books. Originally for those who wrote lengthy reviews or think pieces for blogs on blog sites, it has now transfered to other forms of media like YouTube where one would verbalize &/or visually explain their opinions.

Mind you, there is a difference between talking about bookish things and giving an opinion. Not all bloggers would be considered reviewers, but they usually are.

The vast majority of bloggers do so for free, its a hobby, but for some its a full-time part-time job, a side hustle. They can work independently, with a well established organization/publication, and/or work directly with authors & publishers.

Through various means, a hobbiest & professional blogger can make money. Examples: merch, sponsorships, ads, paid reviews, writing a book, gathering their blog posts into a book, turning a blog post into an article for a publication, paid speaking gigs, blog tours, etc.

What are booktubers?

Bloggers on YouTube.
Also known as Vloggers (video + blog).

This chapter is gonna focus on bloggers & booktubers since they are the most established, but blogging has moved into Instagram (Bookstagram) and Tiktok (Booktok), along with other apps.

Being newer on the scene & shorter forms of reviewing books, Bookstagram and Booktok probably have a less than stellar reputation amongst literally snobs, but their impact has been felt by the market. They are quick to the point and pack a punch.
