It helps boost a writers 1st day sales numbers, which in turn makes them look more sellable to potential agents/publishers, and pushes them up Amazon's lists which makes them more visable to potential readers.

If they already have a publisher... it might make that publisher 1) pick up and market a whole series 2) pay a bigger advance for book 2, 3, 4, etc 3) consider increasing the marketing budget for this writer 4) possibly get book stores/distributes to purchase more books/stock.

If you're a writer, take your time and consider pre-orders. Publishing is all about strategy and you gotta figure out what's best for you.
