Mackenzi Lee - April 19, 2020
The author Mackenzi Lee was called out by authors for signing and drawing in their books. Lee works for a small bookstore named King's English, SLC. It seems, that as incentive or as a bonus, Lee was signing books for customers and/or fans. It seems that the bookstore did it/allowed as a way to boost sales while the Covid19 Pandemic was keeping the store closed to the public.
.
The biggest issues:
Traditionally, the title page is where a writer would sign. Mackenzi Lee not only signed this page, she in many if not most cases.... left no space for the actual author to sigh it in the future.
Then there is what she wrote. Many of her scribbles are about her own content. She also in at least one case... left a complaint inside one book, calling it "too long for me."
Then there is the actual bookstore, not only did they not ask permission from the authors or publishers, they also dismissed any pushback to their actions.
People do write in books, but it's usually their own book or the copy they bought for themselves (note taking, highlighting, etc). Then, there are people who gift books and write on the inside of the cover or first page and leave a message like, "this book changed my life, I hope it changes yours too. Love, Grandma."
