Chapter 2: Nancy Tristis-Vitae
"IF IT WEREN'T FOR YOU, WE WOULDN'T BE GETTING EVICTED!" were the first words that I heard when I came home this Monday afternoon after school. I heard them through the door. I knew my parents struggled with money, but we were getting evicted? I was horrified. I unlocked my door to see my mom packing her things in a haste while my dad was yelling at her about how she was just going to leave our family.
"If you stopped blowing all of our money on useless gambling and junk we wouldn't be getting evicted!" was mom's one and only reply.
"Are we really getting evicted?" Was the first thing I said to my parents when I walked in. They both stared at me, like I did something wrong. Then, mom pulled out a cigarette and lit it. She always did that when she was upset or nervous.
"Your father and I-" She started to say, only to be cut off by dad.
"Since your mother is leaving me with nothing, we are sending you to your brother David's." He said, just like that. 'Brother'? I thought. 'What brother?'
But mom read my mind. "David- your brother- is 30. He was 16 when you were born, and 21 when he married your sister-in-law, Kindred. You were just 5 when he left, and he never looked back." She stopped to catch her breath, but then dad interjected again.
"We contacted him a few days ago telling him we were getting a divorce." Another surprise. I knew that they were likely to get a divorce, but I never knew if they would or not. A bunch of kid's parent's at school were divorced, but I didn't know what it would be like.
"When will I leave?" I asked.
"Tonight" came their response.

Before I knew it, I was on a plane to Orlando. The 2 hour plane ride consisted of 2 things. Number 1 was the flight attendant (Who's name was Aida) checking on my every 10 minuets. Number 2 was me worrying about what David and Kindred would be like.
When the plane landed, I was blown away at how big the place seemed. I followed everyone, and when I got to the waiting area, I saw 2 people with a baby holding up a sign that read "Welcome to Orlando, Nancy!" I knew as soon as I saw the sign that these people were Kindred and David. But mom and dad never mentioned a baby. But then I remember they also mentioned not speaking to David in 9 or so years.
"Um, nice to meet you." Were the first words out of my mouth. I immediately regretted not saying something like "Hi David." I felt like a fool. But David didn't seem to mind.
"Aw, I missed ya!" He said. The excitement in his voice was undeniable. "You know, the last time I saw you, you were just a little munchkin!" I was happy he wasn't mad to see me, but I'm 14, not a type of desert.
"It's finally nice to meet you, Nancy! David loves talking about you." Kindred said.
I smiled. "I've heard a lot about you, too!" I lied. She seemed happy about that. I noticed her that she looked like a model. I wondered if she was. "And who is this?" I asked, gesturing to the baby stroller.
They told me that this is their children, Nina and Lena. They were twins, and they were 1 and 1/2. Nina is blonde haired with green eyes, and Lena is also blonde haired but with blue eyes. I personally think that that is the only way to tell them apart. 'They look so identical!' I thought.
Once we got to David and Kindred's house, I noticed that they had a room all ready for me. It was nice: it had a bed with purple flowers, a wooden dresser, and a white desk. The walls were painted white with purple flowers on the wall. Nice and basic, which is fine. I don't need anything extravagant. To me, this was extravagant. Sure it had purple flowers on the wall, but I liked the purple against the white.
"I hope you don't mind the purple flowers." Kindred said, leaning against the door. "It was going to be one of the girl's rooms, but I figured you wouldn't want to have to share a room with them."
"I wouldn't mind! I mean, at least the room doesn't smell like cigars and I don't have to sleep on the floor." I said. Kindred looked at me with pitiful eyes. "It was ok, really! We had food on the table and a nice place." OK, so maybe I lied a little. Ok, I lied a lot.
Kindred told me everything I needed to know and gave me a tour of the house. Once I turned out the lights and got ready for bed, my alarm clock read 11:29 pm. I was tired.
I closed my eyes. Sleep was about to come. I started to drift off into sleep - "WAHHH! WAHHHH! WAHHH!" I heard right as I was about to fall asleep. The baby's had woken up. I sighed as I tried to go to sleep.
After about 30 minuets of the baby's crying, they went to sleep. Kindred peeked in to see if I was asleep. I faked sleeping so Kindred wouldn't feel bad. That is the one thing I don't want to do on my FIRST day here. Plus, they were the ones who took me away from my parents.
I woke up to rain. A lot of it. Thunder and lightning were there as the ensemble. I rolled over to the side and saw that my alarm was also going off. it was only 7:15. I rolled out of bed, wondering why the alarm was going off so early on a Sunday.
"Morning, munchkin!" Was the first thing I heard when I walked into the kitchen for breakfast. Kindred was feeding the babies, and David was making eggs, bacon, pancakes, and toast. Nina (The twin with the green eyes) was eating everything making a mess, while Lena (The twin with the blue eyes) was also eating her meal, but having Kindred feed it to her, acting so primp and proper.
"So what's with the meal, and the alarm?" I asked. David looked at Kindred and Kindred looked at David.
"The meal is a 'Happy First day' meal." David explained. "And the alarm is because you have to start school tomorrow and this is the time you'll have to wake up so you don't miss the bus."
I nodded my head and got a plate. There were also 3 different types of pancakes: Plain, Banana, and (my personal favorite) chocolate. There were also bagels to substitute for toast, and scrambled eggs, some with garlic and cheese. And the bacon smelled so good, lathered in all that greasy goodness. It all looked so good.
'It's like it's my birthday' I thought to myself happily. I gathered up some grub and sat down at the table where Kindred was sitting with the girls. Just as I was about to eat my first bite, Kindred took the plate away from me.
"You can't eat here!" She cried, panicked. She put my plate on the kitchen counter, and wet a towel. She cleaned up where my plate had been (even though there was nothing there) and then sanitized it like a mad woman.
I was so confused. What did I do wrong? David looked at me as Kindred furiously washed her hands under the water spout. "What did I do, Kindred?" David sighed as Kindred went back to attending to the babies.
I ate my breakfast at the counter, acting like it was no big deal, but inside I still wondered why? I was just about to throw my plate away, when suddenly Kindred pointed to an isolated garbage can. I sighed and threw my garbage away into that garbage can.
When I went to my room, I saw that there were little LED lights, close to the ceiling. There is also a little remote sitting on the desk that I think is the controller. I picked it up and pressed the color purple, and sure enough it controlled the LED lights, but also the light for the fan.
I sat on my bed for a little while, playing with the lights and seeing the differing colors and modes that I can put them to. I ended up choosing purple only because it went with my room. By now, it is 10:00 AM and I feel like there is nothing I can do.
But then David called me to the kitchen and gave me something to do. 'Perfect timing, David.' I thought to myself.
"Kindred and I both have to go to work." David said. "The babies are going to be dropped off at their daycare, and I was wondering if you would mind doing the dishes. Empty the dishwasher and maybe reload it too? If you want."
The only thing that they wanted me to do was unload a dishwasher? And for the whole day? This was life! I happily agreed and asked if there was anything else that they needed me to do. David said not to wreak the house and behave. I nodded, knowing what a fun filled day I had ahead of me.
