Chapter Six: Pathetic
“Stupid dinner,” I grumbled under my breath, placing on my shoes.
Macy specifically told me to dress fancy. The minute I came home and told my mom about the dinner invitation, her eyes brightened as if she finally had something to do with a daughter.
She pushed me into my room, basically shoving every single dress I owned into my face. She treated me like a life-size Barbie, curling my hair and applying my makeup. I swear, she’s more excited about this than what I’m supposed to be.
Deep breaths, Savannah, you’ve ate with the Dean siblings long before.
That was before you suddenly cut off your friendship with Jasper.
Oh shut it, little voice in my head. I’m seriously starting to go crazy now.
The curtains of my window was closed, preventing Jasper to have any view of my bedroom. He wouldn’t exactly want to see the mess my mom and I created. Various articles of clothing and shoes were thrown around carelessly.
This is going to be a bitch to clean up when I get home.
Happy thoughts. Pretend you’re in a My Little Pony tea party instead of a dinner with those two.
Wait, what?
Somebody really needs to check me into a mental hospital.
The doorbell rang and I almost fainted. My mother passed my open door while she was walking to get the door.
“Good luck, honey,” she encouraged sweetly before scampering to answer the door.
I’m going to need more than luck to survive this thing.
Remember, don’t act stupid. Nod when you agree, shake your head if you don’t. The less you talk, the less damage you’ll be able to make.
Just for props, my mother called for me, “Savannah!”
She knew that I was aware that it was the Dean’s right outside our front door. She was buying me extra time to calm myself down.
Looking at myself in the mirror, I nodded at myself, throwing a little look of encouragement at my reflection. Spinning around, I grabbed my purse as I started to walk out of my room, going downstairs to where everybody was waiting.
“Ariel!” I heard Macy squeal, they came into view when I was at the top of the stairs. She threw her arms around my mother, using her as another victim of her unbreathable bear hug, “It’s so good to see you again.”
Mom laughed, calmly hugging Macy back, “You too, how’s it going with the job?”
She finally found the thought to release her, but she still smiling from ear to ear, “It’s tough but nothing this girl can’t handle.”
I started to slowly walk down, gripping the railing of the stairs to keep myself stable. Breathe, Savannah, this is only one night.
Jasper was the first one to catch sight of me while he leaned against the wall with the most bored expression on his face. He brightened up like somebody pressed a switch in him and he smiled right at me.
The same smile that got me falling for him years ago. It never lost its magic but too bad I’m no longer in the same mental state as before.
“Hi,” he greeted once my foot was safely pressed on the floor.
“Hey,” I nodded, offering him a polite smile.
Macy turned to us, greeting me with the same grin she showed my mother, “You look amazing, Savannah.”
“Thanks,” I mumbled quietly.
Macy said a goodbye to my mother, grabbing her brother’s hand and dragging him with her outside. I walked up to my mother, taking in a deep breath.
“You’ll be fine,” she assured, tilting my chin up, “Just remember, those two are the same old kids that you used to play with when you were little.”
“But I haven’t talked to them in years,” I grumbled.
“You’re a strong girl, Savannah,” she encouraged, “Just talk to them.”
It was the same words Kyla said to me while convincing me to talk to Jasper last night. I was starting to think that I’m not really strong as what everybody makes me think.
She started to pushing me to the door, “Now go out there and be the daughter I took the time to raise,” with one final goodbye, she shoved me outside and slammed the door right in front of my face.
Thanks mom.
“Told you she was coming out.”
I turned around and saw the two siblings sitting at the hood of Jasper’s car. They were smiling up at me, showing that they held no grudge.
A pang of guilt hit me as I thought that I made them wait. I was so scared of this event that I wanted to avoid them when they have been nothing but kind to me.
“You guys mad?” I asked, dreading for their answer.
The truth, I have nothing to be scared of. These two are so nice when I’ve been nothing but rude.
“Of course not,” Macy replied sweetly, “Now come on or we’ll be late for our reservations.”
Jasper rounded the car and slid into the driver’s seat. Macy took my hand and dragged me to the passenger seat where she basically shoved me in there before I can mutter a protest.
“Macy!”
“What?” she questioned innocently, “I’m pretty sure that I’ll be third-wheeling the whole night.”
“Macy!” I yelled, a little more flustered than before. Could this get any more embarrassing?
Jasper merely chuckled beside me, pulling out of my driveway.
They tried to engage me into a conversation but just like I reminded myself earlier, I nodded if I agree and I shook my head if I disagreed.
We immediately got seated in the restaurant and I might say, it was kind of classy in a good way.
I tried to distract myself by staring at the menu. I pretended to choose a meal but all the words were a fuzzy picture.
I wonder what they’re thinking right now. Are they regretting that they invited me?
I can’t even utter a single coherent thought, I’m that pathetic.
“Savannah?” Macy’s voice cut my train of thoughts. I blinked a few times before my eyes focused on my surroundings.
A waiter was standing in front of table, patiently waiting for my order.
Jasper tilted his head to the side, asking me a thousand questions with his eyes. Besides, that was how we used to converse during the duration I stopped talking to him.
“She’ll take the steak, medium well with the side of steamed vegetables,” Jasper recited to the waiter.
The boy nodded, repeated all of our orders before retreating to place our orders.
How did Jasper know what I wanted?
“You alright?” he mouthed at me while Macy started to talk about her work in New York.
I stiffly nodded at him before placing my gaze on Macy.
“Enough about me,” Macy said, “Talk about yourself, Savannah.”
No, that’s not part of the plan. The trick was to just nod and shake my head. Talking was not inside my to-do list inside my head.
I opened my mouth before shutting it again, looking like a goldfish.
Macy and Jasper exchanged some looks, questioning my sanity.
Gosh, I really am pathetic.
“I’m going to the restroom,” I suddenly told them, shooting up from my chair.
Before they can ever say a word, I was already walking away from our table. I pushed open the restroom door and I went inside a cubicle. I closed the toilet before sitting on it, burying my face in my hands.
I’m just wrecking this dinner for the both of them, I think that it’s best if I left.
Why did I even agree to this dinner in the first place?
It would be just too rude if I suddenly left right now. Truthfully, I’m the only one who thinks this is extremely awkward.
Macy who obviously had no idea what happened was still treating me like what she usually does and Jasper is pretending like the past three years never happened.
Me? I was being a stubborn little girl.
Just survive this night and it will all be over. Taking a big inhale, I held it in before releasing my breath, ridding myself of my frustrations. Slowly standing up, I unlocked the cubicle door. I passed by the sinks and slowly whisked a few sprinkles of water on my face. It was enough to refresh me but it wasn’t too much to destroy my makeup.
Gripping the door, I pulled it open. When I stepped out, I was shocked to find myself face to face with Jasper.
“Thank God,” he let out, relief present in his voice, “I thought you got into trouble or something.”
He’s not mad that I basically abandoned them?
He reached out and grabbed my hand, “Come on, our food arrived,” he pulled me with him, returning to our table.
Macy kept tapping her manicured fingers on the table. Her fingers only stopped when she caught sight of me, and she quickly stood up, engulfing me in her arms.
“You’re so stupid,” she stated, worry flooding in her tone, “Don’t make us worry like that ever again.”
They’re really not mad.
My hand was still in Jasper’s and I was still Macy’s arms.
They care.
When the all three of us were seated again on our chairs, we begun to eat. This time, I actually spoke to them.
“I still can’t forget that time I brought my first boyfriend home and you two caught him in a net,” Macy reminisced, causing the both of us to laugh.
I allowed myself to let go. My mother was right, they’re still the same kids that I grew up with.
They don’t hold a grudge and for once in my life, I should stop over thinking things.
“Walk Savannah to her door, I’m taking the car home,” Macy said to her brother, stopping right in front of my house.
“Yes ma’am,” Jasper muttered, making Macy shoot him a dirty look. The quivering of their lips clearly showed that both of them were fighting a smile.
“Well, that was nice,” I told him, my voice sounding confident the whole night.
With these two, I found myself a few years back again.
“I’m glad,” he smiled, finally stopping right in front of my door, “But is there a reason why you took so long inside the restroom?”
“It’s just…” I trailed off, finding the right words to explain it, “It’s been three years.”
That simple phrase made Jasper understand why I was so hazy the whole night. He stood up straighter, staring me right into my eyes.
What is he going to do?
“You know the good old days when we were joined at the hip?” he asked.
I mentally snorted, as if I could forget. I’ve spent years craving for all of it to happen again.
“How about we just reset everything?”
A smile was slowly creeping its way over my lips. I just looked at him as he continued on.
“Forget everything that happened and just remember that we’re Jasper and Savannah,” he stated, “The two reckless kids that every babysitter refused to take care of.”
I laughed at his statement, remembering the trouble our parents went through when nobody was there to look after us while they had fun of their own.
We have been inseparable since that faithful day in the school playground where he was the only kid to approach me when I was all alone.
“Alright,” I finally said, saying yes to his suggestion.
Out of the blue, he pulled me into his arms, wrapping me up in a hug. My eyes widened in shock as I was frozen into place.
Jasper Dean was hugging me.
“I missed you,” he whispered as if a weight that has been hurting him was finally lifted.
Slowly but surely lifting my arms, I returned the gesture, hugging him with all my might. He’s here, I wasn’t avoiding him and he wasn’t running away.
We’re Jasper and Savannah, the two reckless kids that was inseparable.
“I missed you too.”
