Chapter Seventeen: Smooth Jaguar (Jasper's POV)

Observing myself in the mirror, I placed on the beanie, contemplating if I should keep it or if it looks too much.

Well, there’s one way to be sure.

Picking up my phone, I searched my contacts for one specific girl who has nothing but a guardian angel when it comes to that quirky girl next door.

“What?” was Kyla’s immediate greeting when she picked up the phone.

Sighing, I removed the beanie before throwing it to my desk, “Beanie or no beanie?”

“Damn it, Jasper, we’ve been planning about this thing since last night,” she groaned. Looks like I’ve caught her in a bad mood, “She wouldn’t care if you have a freaking piece of wool on your head or not.”

Frowning at my phone, I let out a frustrated sigh, “You know how long I’ve been wanting to do this.”

“I know,” she mumbled from the other line, “Just be yourself, that’s what Savannah truly wants.”

I find it hard to believe. If I’ve been truly myself from the start, then she wouldn’t have broken our friendship in the first place.

I still couldn’t forget that horrible day, I ran up to her but she only glared at me. I tried to talk to her, to start up a conversation, but in return, she shook her head and walked away.

I wished I could have known what I have done to do that, I almost beat myself up for that. I let her slip out of my fingers and I was too much of a coward to do anything.

Looking at the open window, I couldn’t help but stare at awe at the girl known as Savannah Everett. As usual, she looked as casual as she can, but she was still mesmerizing.

She was talking on the phone and the grin she was showing was really something else. She was beautiful in every single way you put it.

“Earth to Jasper Dean,” I heard Kyla call from the other line, “Are you looking at Savannah from the window again? Stop staring, you’ll look like a stalker.”

Shaking my head at her, I couldn’t help but agree to her statement. Ever since Savannah showed traces of rebuilding our friendship, I didn’t want to fuck up again. So to be safe, I contacted the one girl who kept an eye at her throughout those years we weren’t talking.

So far, Kyla Bailey has been a big help, but I could still feel the slap on my cheek after she scolded me when I didn’t dance with Savannah during the winter formal.

Don’t worry, I’ve been cursing myself ever since that happened.

But she forgave me, thank God she did. I have no idea what I’ll do if I lose her again.

She caught sight of me from the other side and gave me one of those amazing smiles, rendering me senseless when she did.

Jasper, my boy, you have it bad.

“Good luck,” she said, “Don’t embarrass yourself.”

Nodding, I hung up as I stretched myself. Alright, we can do this.

My first date with Savannah Everett.

I wanted to give her roses but Macy somehow convinced me that it would be too much since I already gave her three bouquets.

Nothing’s too good for her.

“Hold up!” Macy stopped me before I stepped outside. She approached me, fixing my collar before smiling.

“My baby brother is growing up,” she sniffed dramatically.

Rolling my eyes at my sister, I couldn’t help but laugh. She was really something.

“Savannah’s really special, isn’t she?”

“Of course,” I replied with no hesitation.

She’s the best girl you can ever meet.

“Are you sure I shouldn’t get her more roses?”

Macy reached up and slapped me upside the head, “If you get her one more bouquet, I’ll stuff your head in it.”

Laughing at my sister, I straightened myself up, I let her examine my outfit one more time. She gave a nod of approval before opening the door and practically shoving me out of the house.

Alright, clothes done. Now for the second challenge, walking up next door where her brother and his powerful wife are staying.

Don’t get me wrong, Drew and Celeste are kind people, but they’re a bit intimidating if you ask me. The Everett’s home is as normal as it can be on a regular day, but when those two comes home, it’s like the place becomes a high security mansion.

Clearing my throat, I reached up and rang the doorbell, checking my shoes to see if they’re completely shined.

The door swung open to reveal Savannah, looking as adorable as ever.

“You’re looking spiff,” she laughed, stepping out of her house.

“First thing I saw when I opened my closet,” I casually said.

That was a lie. If only she knew how long did I take trying on outfit after outfit, calling Kyla then asking for Macy’s opinion. But she doesn’t need to find out, I might look desperate.

I opened the door for her, and before she slid in, she looked at me teasingly before saying, “No roses?”

I knew I should have gotten the roses.

“I’ll order one right now, we can pick it up on the way?” I started to babble. This is starting to become a habit of mine when I’m with her, “What size do you want? I think I have enough money for the large one,” seriously, why did you have to mention the money, “Never mind, I’ll get whatever you want.”

She shook her head, smiling at my stupidity before entering the vehicle.

Was that a yes or no?

Getting inside the driver’s side, I turned to her, “So where do you want to go?”

I actually have no idea if she wanted to head to some place specific, so I called up a reservation to most of the restaurants I know she enjoys eating at. If she wants to head to the mall, my credit card is ready in case she wants to go shopping. If she wants to go to the park, I brought an extra pair of gloves and scarves so we’re prepared if we get cold, if those are not enough, I brought a blanket that’s now sitting on the backseat.

Let’s just say I’ve come prepared.

Without pausing a moment to think, she let out, “One-Eighty Degrees please.”

That was not part of the plan! I did not prepare for that! Houston, we have a problem.

“Are you sure you don’t want to go somewhere else?” I suggested. Like, you know, a place that I’m prepared for.

“I want One-Eighty,” she pouted.

Damn that pout, it’s the only thing that can make me fall for whatever she wants.

So without much of a choice, I pressed down on that gas before driving to the café she requested.

I don’t get why she would come here for a date. She works here and is practically here all the time.

A waitress showed us to a table for two and handed us some menus, I almost laughed when I recognized the junior that served during that faithful day when I learned about my alleged best friend’s job.

Tristan, I felt a pinch of betrayal when I found out. He knew about it, he knew about everything and yet, he never said a word about it.

Switching my gaze at Savannah, I couldn’t help but internally chuckle at the scene. This almost looked like the day when I asked her to the winter formal. She looked at me weirdly when I asked if we could drive to the dance, I chickened out and made an excuse about gas consumption.

Just saying, I was one smooth jaguar when I said that gas part. Jasper and Savannah, saving the environment together!

She placed down her menu and smiled at me, standing up from her seat, “I have to go to the restroom.”

Nodding, I watched her as she retreated away. Sinking down on my seat, I took out my phone and dialed Kyla’s phone.

I hope she won’t be so cranky right now.

“So how are you two lovebirds?” she joked from the other line.

“She wanted to go to One-Eighty!” I groaned, resting my elbow on the table, “It’s not what I planned.”

“Wait, you’re both at One-Eighty?” she asked the obvious and I hummed in confirmation, “What day is it?”

Holding my phone away from my ear for a short while, I looked at the date before replying to her question, “Saturday, why?”

“I’m so stupid,” was the last thing she muttered before hanging up.

I stared at the phone in wonder before I felt a figure sit across from me. I smiled and looked up, expecting Savannah to be there.

That happiness quickly slipped away when I saw Tristan Hansen occupying the chair right across from mine.

How come I didn’t see this coming?

Straightening up, my eyes turned into slits as I looked up at him, “What are you doing here?”

“Trust me, I have no intention of ruining your date with Savannah,” he sighed.

“Well, you weren’t exactly a helping hand in the first place,” I started to say stubbornly.

“Again, I was in no place to meddle, if Savannah didn’t want to talk to you then she doesn’t want to talk to you, I’m not going to force her to,” he scoffed, even though, he kept his calm composure.

It was always like this between the both of us, he was the composed one while I was the one who usually goes into a state of panic.

“You knew I’ve liked her since middle school,” I grunted, “And you also knew how much I wanted to talk to her ever since sophomore year, when she completely erased my existence in her mind.”

His eyes started to become sympathetic, staring at me, “I know, you wouldn’t shut up about it.”

That was the reason why I was so mad at him. He knew about my crush on her, and he knew how distraught I was when Savannah started to ignore me, yet to find out that he was friends with her all this time, it was really saddening.

“You like her, don’t you?” I accused.

Where did that come from?

His eyes widened at my sudden statement, “What?”

“That’s the reason why you didn’t tell me,” I continued, “You wanted her for yourself.”

He eyed me as if I just accused him of killing his own mother. He shook his head, silently chuckling to himself as I told him the most amusing thing in the world, “Oh Jasper, you couldn’t get any wrong.”

“I’m not stupid,” I crossed my arms over my chest.

Are you really, Jasper?

“I like Kyla,” he admitted without a moment of hesitation, “She’s my girl, not Savannah.”

My mouth gaped open. How come I never knew about my own best friend’s crush?

Now I feel completely selfish.

“Not Savannah?” I asked dumbly.

“She’s a good friend,” he shrugged, “But she’s not my type.”

We looked at each other for a moment, blinking as we both allowed everything to sink in. Then, to make us look like complete idiots, we started to laugh.

Sometimes, the stupidity and idiocy of everything will just amuse you.

We heard slowly clapping and we turned to see the beauty herself walk up to us, smiling at the achievement she has done.

“Glad you two are finally done with your stupid feud.”

The chime that usually signals a new costumer sounded around the café. We turned to the door and saw Kyla running up inside, slipping on the wet entrance, caused by the people getting in after stepping on the snow.

She crashed on the floor, groaning as she did so.

Savannah quickly ran up to help her best friend, the two of them laughed it off as she tried to pull up Kyla to her feet.

“They’re a keeper,” Tristan muttered, eyeing the two girls and I couldn’t agree more.

Savannah Everett and Kyla Bailey are two special girls, Tristan and I are really lucky.

I was quite disappointed after I found out that this wasn’t a date, it was just a plot by Savannah to regain Tristan’s friendship, but at the end of the day, the four of us had a good lunch at the café.

“That was fun,” Savannah let out her cute little giggle, dusting off the few snow from her hair.

It still lacked the date factor if you ask me, way to get my hopes up. I puffed my cheeks out like a child as I started to drive back to our homes.

“Now where are we going?” Savannah asked, looking out of the window.

“Home,” I mumbled bitterly.

She reached out and wrapped a cold hand around my wrist, “I thought we were going to the park.”

“What?”

Rolling her eyes, she pointed to the blanket on the backseat, “I know you brought that for a reason.”

Pursing my lips into a straight line, I drove to the side, turning to her, “But I thought you just wanted to go with your plan.”

She looked away from me, staring out the window as she hid behind her hair, “I still want to spend some time with you though,” when those words escaped her mouth, she lifted her hand to cover her lips.

Point one for Jasper Dean!

Grinning at her, I made a turn and drove us to the park.

Walking along the path, we stayed in comfortable silence. It’s always like this, we don’t need nonsense chatter to fill the air, we just need each other’s company.

She wore my scarf and gloves. The gloves that was intended for me looked gigantic on her small hands, but that was what it made it look precious.

We found the driest bench we can scout and sat on it, wrapping the blanket over our bodies as we watched the peaceful scene in front of us.

Closing my eyes, I prayed to the heavens that we can stay like this. Jasper, just don’t fuck up.

Switching my gaze to Savannah, I couldn’t help but just smile at the sight of her. She has no idea how much she affects me.
