Chapter 6 | tense

"I just can't figure out what to do, surely you can like... intervene or something?" L sighed, lying face down on the floor of your room.

"Sorry man, I can't be messing with mortals like this. Just you being here is ehh... rule ambiguous" you replied.

L was stumped. He needed something to latch onto, one suspicious behaviour that could warrant a search of the Yagami house. But the only thing L had to go on that wasn't his knowledge of the death note thanks to some wild time travel shit, was vibes. His never wrong gut feeling that Light was guilty. But a gut feeling won't hold up in court. Just one thing, a suspicious comment from Light or him being unaccounted for for a suspicious amount of time. Something that could be his ticket into naming Light as a prime suspect. But then again, he hadn't even met the guy yet. Well... he had, but that was before you pulled him from his death and sent him back in time. This new timeline? He hadn't met Light yet.

Maybe that university entrance ceremony could be of use, instead of taking the same approach he did last time he could try and corner Light another way...

"I mean the entrance ceremony is coming up, maybe I can work around that..." L muttered.

"That's probably your best bet. Now you know for sure he is Kira and there'll be a shinigami with him at all times, you could use that knowledge to your advantage" you replied.

He suddenly perked up, your works planting and idea in his mind. He sat up, thinking for a moment before turning to you where you sat in your bed with your computer keyboard in your lap flipping through universes.

"Is there a way I can see the shinigami without touching the book?" He asked.

"Uhh... don't think so. But I'd you want to know the whereabouts of him I could text you exactly where he is when you need it" you replied.

"Yes, that's it! I can use the shinigami as an anchor. If I can convince the shinigami I can see him or at least know about him, that'll make him approach me. He can be my ticket to getting some dirt on Light, use his own supernatural pet against him"

You gave him a confused look, clearly there was something going on in that mind of his you were missing. You were about to speak up and ask him to elaborate, but a knocking on the outside of your room made you jump.

"What the-" you muttered, switching the screen to view what was outside.

Expecting maybe a cosmic traveller finally finding you on their long journey, your noood ran cold when you saw who it actually was. It was your boss.

"Crap- CRAP! L you need to hide he can't see you here" you panicked.

"What? Who?"

"My freaking boss! Man will cube my ass if he knows I'm meddling with a universe outside my duties"

You hit a button on your keyboard, a section of the wall opening up into a hallway. You shoved L inside, closing it up behind him. He didn't have any time to protest, he just had to put up with being tossed around like a rag doll for a moment in your panic. Once L was securely hidden away, you opened the doors for your boss. Although you didn't want to just leave L stranded in a section of the time room he didn't know, so you had an idea.

"Fuck that was close..." you sighed.

L jumped, turning to find your 2D form on the wall behind him.

"Wh- but you-" he stammered.

"My 3D form is talking to him right now. I can talk to you in this form. Split my consciousness" You replied.

"You know what, I'm not even going to ask questions about how you work anymore. Just accept that you can do things I don't understand. But this boss of yours..?"

You gestured for him to follow, and your 2D form began to slide across the walls down the hall. L followed, walking beside you wondering how big this place actually was beyond the main room you resided in.

"That jerk in the other room, he's 'the narrator' as they call him. He's the one that bosses us guardians around and makes sure we don't fuck things up. If we do? We get trapped in these tiny cube things and left in our rooms with no way of getting out. He's the god here, not me" you explained.

"And he's a jerk because?" L asked.

"He's way too harsh, you make one tiny and easily fixable mistake and he cubes your ass. He doesn't care about the mortals living in the universes we watch over, he only cares that us cosmic entities are under his control. If he gave two shits about your universes, the shinigami wouldn't be dropping death notes in the first place"

So an asshole god who targets specifically cosmic entities and doesn't care for mortals or any of the universes? Sounds like the CEO of a big, shady company. Doesn't care about the minimum wage workers, only those who work directly under them because he can physically see the power he holds over them.

"This place is like a pocket dimension connected to the time room, where I store my stuff mainly. And also where my physical body sleeps, don't wake them up or I'll poof out of existence" you continued.

"Your physical body?" L asked.

You lead him toward a room with a glass window on it, the door locked tight and the room don't lit. Through the window he could see a single bed, and the vague shape of a humanoid person lying under the blankets.

"That's me, my host body at least. (Y/n) is nothing but the eternal dream of a random ass guy who got caught up in some cosmic bullshit and now I'm here. Waking the body up would not only kill me, but it's a cosmic crime to kill a guardian so you'd end up arrested by none other than my asshole boss" you explained.

L didn't even want to know what the consequences would be, probably something horrible if it was dealing with an asshole god and his tired minions. He just watched the slow breathing of the body you resided in, barely able to make out what your host body looked like in the dark.

"And what's your other form doing right now?" L asked.

"Trying to act not suspicious..." you replied.

At the exact same time you had the conversation with L, your 3D form was acting as natural as possible in front of the narrator. The being only a vaguely person shaped translucent form with a voice that echoed when it spoke.

"You didn't tell me you were going to show up, I'd have clean up a bit if I knew" you said, trying to stay casual.

"If you knew then you'd be on your best behaviour. I want your raw self when I check on you, (y/n)" narrator replied.

"Well, this is raw me. Messy room and all"

He was silent a moment, before his form turned to face yours. For a moment you worried he knew L was in the other room, but you assured yourself mentally he'd have no way of knowing.

"The merge warning went off recently, care to explain that?" He asked.

Crap, CRAP.

"Oh yeah that, there was this one universe that almost went the exact same as one that already exists. But I diverted things, crisis averted don't worry about it" you explained, as casually as you can while you were mentally freaking the fuck out.

"How exactly to two universes get that close to merging (y/n)? Are you not doing your job correctly?" He asked.

"No no! I'm following protocol. There was just a last second change in a mortals timeline, everything was going fine and then boom! He almost died. Don't worry, I made sure he's alive and the universes stayed different. I just uh... made the car that was going to hit him turn the other way" you lied.

It was silent for a moment, something told you your boss wasn't fully buying it. But he had no proof of anything else happening, so he had to accept the explanation.

"Keep an eye on that universe then, we can't have two of them merging" he said.

"Don't worry boss, you can count on me" you replied.

Phew, you dodged the bullet this time. But you really had to be more careful, next time you might not be so lucky...
