Chapter 3 | re-route
If L wanted to save his own ass, as well as his fathers, he was going to take your advice. So after a whole night of calculating possible outcomes and coming up with the best plan possible, he had a foolproof plan.
At exactly 6:05pm, the stalker would approach Misa. That couldn't happen. L did some digging into this man, thanks to you giving him his name. L found not only did he gave a criminal record and was out on parole, but he worked WITH Misa. Not directly with her, he was a janitor for her modelling company. That's why he knew her and had access to stalking her. At first, L thought maybe be could just divert his plans to stalk Misa home by getting him called to a parole meeting. But after seeing his prior criminal record and mental health issues, L was sure he'd just ignore that meeting to stalk Misa instead. Even though missing a parole meeting would get him into trouble.
So he made up a backup plan just in case that happened. L himself would go to the place where the confrontation was going to happen, and before any harm could come to Misa, he'd straight up arrest the guy. That would ensure Misa wouldn't be harmed in the future, and potential gain the death note then. L had the grounds to arrest the guy, he was actively stalking a girl and breaking parole agreements.
Although he needed to look the part, so no one knew he was L and not just a regular officer. So L managed to get himself a standard Japanese police uniform, and one of his many fake name IDs, he was all set.
The sun was almost completely down, 5:56pm. He stood by the now closed boutique Misa would pass by, keeping a close eye on the area. but acting nonchalant by looking down at his phone as if he were on break. He'd glance up, look for Misa or the stalker, then look back down at his phone.
His contact list was quite sad really, his work phone had a ton of law enforcement contacts but his personal one only had two. His dad, and Roger back at wammys. Well, 3 now technically. You were there, but lacked a number or picture. Just your name, somehow able to make contact without a number via that phone charm you'd given him. He was about to close the lid of the flip phone when he felt it vibrate in his hand, and up popped a message.
(Y/n)
He's coming. Good luck.
So you were watching. He had a feeling you would be. Looking up from the screen he spotted Misa walking past, a little further behind her was the stalker. Looking oh so inconspicuous with his hood up and hands in his pockets. He walked past, and L followed just far enough to not be noticed. This wasn't the first time he'd had to do undercover work, he'd done it many times before. He'd haven had to pretend to be a girl once, which amazingly worked. So L knew what he was doing here, and kept his distance while keeping a close eye on the situation.
At a corner, the stalker turned while Misa kept going straight, immediately L knew what was going on. He was going to try and cut her off at the next corner. Thinking quickly L spotted an an alleyway, and zipped through it to get between Misa and the stalker.
Just as Misa rounded the next corner, she came face to face with the stalker.
"Misa! Misa can we talk?" He asked.
She stopped, a little startled and confused. She recognised this guy as the janitor at her job, but had no idea why he'd want to see her. Unless... unless THIS was the guy that had been harassing her anonymously. She immediately became nervous, taking a step back.
"Uh- I have to get home, maybe another day?" She stammered.
"Misa please, I need to talk to you"
"Im sorry I just have to-"
Just as suspected, the stalker brandished a knife from his pocket making Misa jump back in fright.
"N-no please I don't want any trouble!" She said.
Before the situation could get any further, L swooped in. He had the right to threaten a taser, as the stalker was armed and dangerous.
"Drop the weapon and leave her alone!" He said, getting between Misa and the stalker.
"Stay out of this! This is a couples issue not yours!" The stalker snapped.
"As far as I'm concerned this girl isn't your girlfriend, you're a stalker and breaking your parole agreements. Now drop the weapon or I have the right to use force" L replied.
Misa felt like a miracle had happened, a police officer happening to be nearby right as she was being threatened? What act of the gods was this?
"I'm not his girlfriend! I barely know him!" Misa said.
"She said it herself, now drop the weapon" L added.
Luckily, the stalker has enough sense in his sick mind to not attack an armed officer. And he put the weapon down and held his hands up, allowing L to place him under arrest.
"Hands behind your back" he demanded.
Following orders the stalker allowed L to cuff him and search him for any other weapons. L had connections in law, so even though he wasn't officially a Japanese police force officer, he could radio someone who was for a car to come take the stalker away. He had the stalker sit on the side of the path, and he took the knife into an evidence bag to be kept away from him. Turning to Misa, who was still anxious and standing a considerable distance away he gave her a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry ma'am, you'll have to wait here just a moment. I'll need your statement, but I won't leave your stalker unattended" he said.
"No no. I get it, I'm just relived you were nearby" she replied.
"Amazing luck..."
It wasn't long before an actual officer came around to take the stalker away, and L was able to play the role of cop a little longer to make sure everything went smoothly. He had to pretend he didn't know Misa though, which was a little odd feeling. He took her name, statement and gave her some contacts for the department that would be handling her case. As well as calling her a taxi so she wouldn't have to walk home feeling unsafe. Careful to defuse the situation and plant the seeds of doubt in her mind about Kira. He'd stopped her getting the death note, which was one problem solved. Although even if she may not show up in the case again thanks to that, he still wanted to at least push her down the right path. So there was one more thing he wanted to leave her with.
"Thank you for your cooperation Miss Amane, I know this is a stressful situation. And one other tip..." he muttered, writing something down on a slip of paper to hand to her.
He tore the paper from the notepad, handing it to her. It was a website and phone number for a PTSD therapist.
"Stalking can lead to trauma, so for your own wellbeing is suggest looking into it to prevent any further mental distress" L suggested.
It was 2006 in Japan, mental health was still rather stigmatised despite the high depression levels. He hoped Misa would take the advice, despite the stigma and the public image she had as a model. If she got therapy for this event, hopefully that'd lead to her unpacking everything else that culminated in her ending up on Kiras side in the previous timeline. Thus, preventing her from having anything to do with Kira even without the death note.
"Thank you, I think I'll need that after this" Misa sighed.
"There's no shame in needing help, especially after a traumatic event like this. Take care of yourself Amane" L replied.
As her taxi pulled up, she gave L a tired smile and thanked him again. She didn't know it, but she'd just dodged a huge bullet, and she'd just been talking to none other than L. L waved her off and breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully that would be the last he saw of Misa, not because he didn't like her, but because it was better she had nothing to do with Kira at all. L checked the time, it was 6:45pm. In under an hour he'd managed to prevent his death, his fathers death and Misa becoming the second Kira. But there was still the matter of Light at hand, that he needed to think over.
The street now empty and the sky dark, he turned to head back to the hotel so he could eat that freshly made cake Watati said he was making. Although it seemed that would have to wait a bit, because once again all he did was blink and suddenly he was back in your space between time.
"Well done officer, you just fixed the timeline"
He looked around a moment, processing how quickly he just got teleported again. When he turned around, he was again met with you leaning over your laptop, this time sitting in the middle of the room on the floor. How was that comfortable?
"Thank gods... anything else I need to do?" He asked.
"To fix the timeline? No you're good. You prevented your death and your dads, Misa is out of the picture now. I bought you back because I think I have an idea how to get to Light without revealing you have a cosmic entity on your side" you said.
Now that he needed, he wasn't sure how he was going to explain how he knew all these things about Kira that no one else knew yet. He couldn't exactly say 'hey guess what? I almost died but a person who's not really a god but is super powerful pulled me out of that timeline and sent me back in time to stop Misa from picking up a death note'. Either everyone would think he's insane, or they'd demand evidence and that would reveal your existence.
"Nice outfit by the way" you teased.
L suddenly remembered he was still wearing a police uniform, and cringed. He didn't like clothes that weren't his usual loose cotton ones.
"Ugh, get it off me" he complained.
"I mean I could, but then you'd be naked"
Feeling his face burn at the tease, you just gave him a little snicker at the sight of his blush.
"Just kidding, here" you said, snapping your fingers.
Before he knew it, he was back in his normal clothes and man that felt much better.
"Ok get your ass over here, let me explain some stuff" you said, beckoning him over.
He sat down beside you, in his usual little curled up way. You had his full attention, this could be his one way ticket to solving the case, a ticket he definitely needed if he wanted to keep this timeline safe.
