Chapter 2 | solution

He wasn't sure how long had passed, but he'd eaten a whole pack of mochi, drank the best tea of his life and spent time watching the universe where he was a girl out of curiosity. But finally, you'd come to a conclusion.

"Ok, I know how we can fix this" you spoke up.

You beckoned him over, telling him to sit beside you and watch the screen as you explained.

"Ok so, looking over everything I've determined the moment that leads to your death is Misa getting the death note. If she never does then she'll never meet Light, Rem won't even be in the human realm and you'll be alive. So I'm going to send you back to the day before Misa gets her note, you stop her from picking it up" you explained.

"Understood, where exactly does she get it?" L replied.

You pulled up a replay of the exact moment she picked it up on your screen to show L, he watched intently memorising the surroundings and events. He recognised the street, he'd driven through it before. A man with a knife approaches Misa but he has a heart attack before she can be hurt. Moments later the death note is dropped, and she picks it up. It's dark outside, meaning this happened at night.

"You can either get her to go another route so she isn't attacked, or stop the attacker. Either way as long as she never encounters that man, she'll be completely not involved in the case at all. Light will never meet her, never get to Rem and you'll live" you explained.

"Hm... I have a few ideas. Can you identify this man?" L asked.

You clicked on him, your system analysing his face. L had no idea how this magic worked, but it looked like a computer program and it made him wonder if this was some kind of matrix situation.

"His name is Riku Asahara, he's 35 and has a criminal record. Kira would have gotten to him eventually I assume, if not for the shinigami falling for Misa situation" you said.

"Riku Asahara, got it. I can work with this" L replied.

"Good, as long as this man never encounters Misa, the timeline will be fixed and you and your dad will live. Light will still need to be caught though, although with the knowledge now you have from before I pulled you in here, you'll have an advantage"

L had a few ideas how he could go about this, but he figured he'd go with the safest route and use this man's prior criminal record against him. Having him called into a probation check so he never even gets to think about following Misa that night. If that failed, L could just go down there and stop him himself. He could fight, he was a lot stronger than he looked.

"I'll be watching to make sure things work out, if they don't I'll pull you back here and we can try again" you added.

"Is there some way I can contact you?" L asked.

"Hmm... hang on"

You summoned up a phone charm, of a little box with stars on it. One of said stars was a button that could be pressed.

"Put it on your phone and you'll be able to call me, or press the button if you need to come back here" you said.

He held out his hand to take it, but before you handed it over, you took his hand and gave him a stern look.

"Don't abuse this power though, technically I'm not meant to be giving people access to my time room like this. You can't tell any about me, if people find out there's a multiverse... my boss, let me repeat that: my BOSS, will find out from all the mass panic and then my ass is absolutely being cubed" you warned.

L hadn't a clue what half of that meant, but if there was some being out there even more powerful than you, one that wasn't a god per se but still in a position of authority, he didn't want to mess with it. He nodded in understanding, and you handed him the charm to put on his phone.

"Understood. Thank you" he assured.

"Good. Now brace yourself, I'm sending you back" you replied.

Before he could even speak, he was back in the hotel from almost a year ago. He blinked and he was there, standing in the bedroom he hadn't actually been sleeping in, just using to get away from the taskforce. He checked the time, it was midday. He had all afternoon and night to stop this man approaching Misa tomorrow night. Although he needed a moment to process everything that just happened, almost dying and being teleported for a mysterious room between worlds where a being told him he needed to fix things.

He looked down at the phone charm, the proof that all of that was real in his hands. Attaching it to his phone, he saw the screen glitch for a moment before a new contact was added, (y/n). No phone number, no picture, no location, just your name. He didn't have time to ponder on all this just yet, he needed to ensure he didn't die in the future. He went straight for his laptop, and into the criminal records for this Riku Asahara guy.

He was out on parole, his prior conviction being domestic assault. From the fact he was going to try and attach Misa, L wasn't surprised about the former charges. After quickly finding who his parole officer was, he used the fake persona he had attached to the Tokyo police to email them about a check up tomorrow evening, meaning Riku would HAVE to be at home or he'd miss it. But just to be sure, L also planned on actually going to the location of the attack tomorrow just in case this loser didn't care about missing a parole check in and still showed up.

All he had to do now was wait, it seemed like an easy task but the suspense of the situation was killing him already. Not to mention he knew you were watching him, and the feeling of being watched was... odd.

A knock on the door snapped him from his thoughts, and upon looking up he found it was Watari coming in to offer tea as usual. L jumped up, scrambled over and pulled him into a hug.

"Oh? What's this sudden affection?" Watari laughed.

Oh right... he had no idea about anything that just happened. That he'd died and L watched it happen.

"O-oh just... uh- read a case where a kid was in my position but never got adopted. Made me... glad you're my dad I guess" L stammered out.

"You really shouldn't be working on cases like that, as much as they need to be solved. You know it's hard for you"

"Yeah... I know"

It was no secret to either of them, orphan and child abuse cases really got to L. He could stare killers in the face, he could read reports on the most vile acts of discrimination, he could listen to a cannibal confess their crimes... but when it was a child that was the victim? He just couldn't bare it.

"I suppose you'll want something from the bakery" Watari asked.

"Yes please, shortcake" L replied.

"Of course, strawberry?"

"Obviously"

Watari smiled and rolled his eyes, so typical of L he really didn't even have to ask nowadays.

"I'll be back in 30 or so minutes" he said.

"Thanks. Oh! And one thing- tomorrow evening I'm going out. Just for an hour or so... I uh... want to check something..."

What kind of excuse was that? He really needed to get better at this if he was going to have to hide all this knowledge from literally everyone. Watari was used to L's secrecy though, expecting it to be some case theory or something he didn't want anyone knowing yet.

"Alright, just be back before dinner if you want fresh cake for dessert" Watari said.

"Obviously, wouldn't miss it" he replied.

You watched the two converse over your screen, snickering to yourself that L was talking to his dad like he was a teenager wanting to go out with friends the next night. Seems like even at his big age he was still his adoptive dads kiddo at heart.

You sure as hell hoped this all worked out, otherwise that small little found family that meant so much to him would be in great danger.
