Chapter 16 | mirror image

L stood in the middle of a quiet street, it looked somewhat familiar to him, but things seemed off at the same time. It wasn't his universe but it was definitely similar.

"This looks so familiar..." he muttered.

"Write down the code for this universe so we can use it to find yours" you said, reaching the form of your arm into his bag where he'd put his phone.

L took it off you, when he flipped it open he was met with several missed calls and text messages from Watari.

"Oh sh- hang on..." he muttered, opening the messages up.

Dad: L are you ok?

Dad: where are you?

Dad: L Lawliet I swear if you're hurt

Dad: that cloaked figure grabbed Cheif Yagami and demanded he take them to Light, the taskforce went after them. I'm not leaving this hotel until I know you're ok.

Well, at least L had someone who cared about him back home...

"Your dad freaking out?" You asked.

"Yeah, I'll message him back... can I send messages though universes?" He replied.

"Dunno, never tried. It works from my time room though so maybe"

"I guess we'll see"

L messages back, assuring he was ok and he was finding his way home with some help. To give him any updates on what was going on in his universe he could, and of course noted down the code to the universe he stood in at the moment. Putting his phone back in his bag, the next step was to figure out where exactly he was.

"Well the signs are in English, so it's an English speaking country" he noted, looking around at the quiet town.

Not many people were out, no one had noticed him magically appear in the middle of the street. It seemed like it was almost evening as the sun was setting and most shops were closing.

"Hang on..." he muttered, spotting a sign at the end of the street, it looked very familiar...

When he walked toward it, you couldn't help but hold onto his arm to keep yourself stable. Witch each step, the bag would move against his body and you'd be shaken around a little. It wasn't a perfect way of transporting you by any means but it was better than exploding in your 3D form.

"Wait I know where we are! This is one block away from wammys!" L said, the street sign making everything click in his mind.

This clearly wasn't his universe, some of the surroundings were different. But it was in the same bracket of universes as his, so it would be similar at the least.

"Go there, if wammys exists in this universe you might be able to find out how similar to your universe this one is" you replied.

"Already walking" He replied, wasting no time.

He was definitely in Winchester, it was chilly and the early setting sun meant it was likely close to winter. He didn't have anything apart from the bag you sat in and his phone, so if he could manage to get some stuff from wammys, it'd be a big help. L knew the way by heart, although he did note that each time he'd usually take a left turn, the signs would indicate right. Like this universe was a flipped version of his.

The road to wammys looked the same though, and when it came into view he couldn't help but feel a sense of warm nostalgia. It'd been a while since he'd seen those gates, no one was playing outside at this out, most of the kids would be called inside for dinner by now. The building looked the same, yet slightly unfamiliar. Like the colour of the walls was different or something, it was such a small change L wasn't sure what it was.

"L- look at the sign!" You spoke up, making L stop as he passed it by.

Wammys house orphanage for gifted children
Est 1960 by Quincy Wammy.

"Quincy..? Wait- is this the gender swapped universe you showed me? Quincy is the feminine counterpart to Quillish isn't it?" L asked.

"I think so... as far as I remember Kira hasn't happened in his universe, at least not yet. So... girl you might be in there-" you replied.

"I have GOT to see this-"

Walking through the gates and up to the front door, he knocked on it and waited for a moment. It was answered by and older woman, who at first L didn't recognise until he saw the name badge. Robyn... this was the female version of Roger, and when he realised it, he couldn't unsee it. They DID look like Roger.

"May I help you?" She said.

"Can I talk to Quincy? I know this is a weird hour but it's kind of... important" L asked.

Roger- Robyn gave L a squint, like he looked familiar but she couldn't place it. Knowing that her version of L and Watari had agents working under them, he assumed that L must be one of them and was here about a case. Thinking he looked familiar because she'd seen him meet with them before at some point.

"She's in her office, right this way" she said.

When L stepped inside, things looked almost identical to his wammys. ALMOST identical. Some of the pictures on the walls were different, some hallways went in the other direction, the windows that were usually closed were open. Slight changes that he couldn't always register. Robyn knocked on the office door of Wata- Quincy... what would the feminine version of Watari be?

"Quincy you have a client" Robyn said.

"Send them in"

L felt so strange hearing such a familiar voice, only lighter. But he had to stay focused here, and make sure he didn't come off as absolutely insane. He thanked Robyn and opened the door. The office looked the exact same, only the man sitting at the desk wasn't a man, but a woman. She looked like Watari, dressed like him too. Only she was a woman, she looked like she could be his sister.

"Wow... ok, uh- hello. I know this is a weird time and this is going to sound absolutely insane but... is L Lawliet here?" L said.

Quincy immediately looked up from her paperwork, skeptical and shocked. And when she lay eyes on L... confused.

"How... do you know her name?" She asked.

So she was here...

"Listen, this is going to be absolutely insane. As long as you give me the time to explain, don't freak out until AFTER you know the full story... I can make everything make sense" L said.

Quincy gave him a skeptical yet intrigued look, the fact L looked so familiar and knew the name of her adoptive daughter gave her this sense of trust in a way.

"I'm... L, but... not YOUR L. My name is also L Lawliet, I'm also half Japanese and had abusive birth parents and was abandoned and bought to an orphanage as a child. I'm also the worlds greatest detective and I know EVERYTHING that your L knows. With the exception of some names probably... they're all swapped here. I had two previous successors, and currently have three who'd be in this orphanage right now. One redhead, one blonde, one white hair. To me, their names are Mail Jeevas, Mihael Keehl and Nate River, all are male like me. I'm from a swapped universe where everything is the same but... mirrored" L rambled.

Quincy gave him a dumbfounded look. That sounded absolutely ridiculous... but all of it was information only L and herself could know. Down to the hair colours of the successors. What their girl names would be, L wasn't sure though. But the fact he knew that they looked like and knew that girl L Lawliet was the worlds greatest detective and an orphan... that gave him some real credibility.

"Again I know it sounds absolutely insane but I can prove it. (Y/n) say hi" L added.

"Wha- why are you dragging me into this? It's your alternate universe dude?" You asked.

"Because you're the sentient 2D form in my bag that proves the supernatural and multiverse exist..."

"Oh yeah-"

You looked over at Quincy, who stared at you completely dumbfounded you'd just talked and moved. She'd assumed you were just a picture on the front of the bag.

"L put the bag down, I'll move onto the wall" you said.

L took the bag off his shoulder and placed it at his feet, allowing you to shift your form off the bag, onto the floor and up the wall, adjusting your size to your default one.

"Hey man- girl... promise you're not hallucinating or anything I'm real. I'm the one who partly accidentally caused this mess to begin with... we're trying to get back to his universe but we need some information about this one and if you can, some supplies? If we can talk to your version of L that would be great" you said.

Well... she'd seen it all. There was no way to deny this whack story now. Although she felt like she'd been given whiplash with how quickly this was all dumped on her, she was admittedly very curious and now she knew the man before her was another version of L, there was an almost... maternal instinct.

She simply pressed down onto the PA systems speaker, and asked for her L to come to her office.

"Thank you" you sighed in relief.

She tuned back to your L, looking him up and down.

"You do look just like her... like twins. I thought you looked familiar..." she said.

"I've seen a picture of her... I was pretty surprised how similar we looked too. I should've been, we're the same person... but seeing yourself as the opposite sex is... strange. Unless you're trans I don't think it's something people really consider" L replied.

"So... your version of me would be a male too?"

"Yes, his name is Quillish Wammy. He's my adoptive dad"

That put a smile on her face, glad to know that even in an alternate universe she'd taken care of the girl- boy, that she grew to love as a child of her own. Just to prove it even further, L pulled up a picture of the two of them together on his phone, and passed it to Quincy to show her.

"Oh wow! He looks like he could be my twin brother! I always knew I'd be tall as a man" she laughed.

L cracked a smile, Quincy truly was just his dad, only gender swapped.

The door handle clicked, and all eyes turned to the doorway that had just been pushed open.

"Mum, is something-" the girl began.

You looked at your L, then over at his gender swapped counterpart. She looked like she hadn't left her bed in days, probably working on some weird case in her nest of blankets. Her long black hair was a wavy mess, eyebags as deep as your L's ones. Same white shirt, same blue jeans. Her face was softer, her slouch still there but it didn't hide the curve under her shirt. She definitely wasn't wearing a bra, and you can't say you were surprised L would be the kind to not care for a bra. Too tight for him- her.

"Who..? Mum do I have a twin or something?" She muttered.

"Not exactly but... we are definitely related in a- unique way, let's say..." Your L replied.

"Damn, you really do look like twins" you chuckled.

Hearing your voice made girl L suddenly realise you were there, having completely missed you as a new picture on the wall or something at first.

"Did that just ta-" she said.

"Sit down hun, there's a lot to explain..." Quincy replied.

This would be fun to watch, two L's interacting. So, so similar but just different enough to make them seem like two separate people. They were in a way, despite being the same in DNA and name.
