Chapter 13 | narration
The narrator, your boss, wasn't the same kind of cosmic entity you were. He was a step above you, what mortals would consider a god. He took many forms, but his default one was a being in a big hat and shrouded in a cloak. You'd never actually seen what he looked like under there, you assumed some kind of eldritch horror.
You were practically sweating bullets, looming over his shoulder trying not to seem suspicious as he watched the screen in your room showing L's universe. He wanted to see it, you couldn't deny him.
"Hmm... so the tired one is the anomaly?" He spoke up.
"Yeah, he almost died. But I stopped it and everything is back to normal, I just haven't gotten around to filing the report yet" you replied.
"There's a shinigami in this universe, I assume it's dropped a death note?"
"Yep. That one with the bowl cut has it. There's already a universe where he kills the tired one so I just stopped it from happening so they didn't merge. That's all"
It was hard to tell what the narrator was thinking, his face was always shrouded by the brim of his hat so you could never see his expression.
"What are their names?" He asked.
Hands practically shaking, you pretended to not know and look them up. If you answered too quickly he'd know you'd been snooping on this universe.
"Uhh... says here they tired one is L Lawliet and the other is Light Yagami. The shinigami is Ryuk" you explained.
"How many versions of them are currently alive in the multiverse?" The narrator asked.
You didn't know why he wanted this information, but it made you uneasy. You looked it up anyway, following orders would make you seem much less suspicious, it made it seem like you had nothing to hide.
"L has 12 alive, 3 deceased. Light has 11 alive, 5 deceased. And Ryuk is exclusive to this universe, since you know. Shinigami and all" you replied.
"Are any of their alternate selves anomalies?" The narrator asked.
"Nope, it was this this L. Again, almost died. He'll keep living, he's back on the right track now" you assured.
Just talking about this made you nervous. You absolutely were NOT meant to save L the way you did. But you panicked, you didn't have any other way to stop his death. Sending a mortal back on their own timeline and thus altering a universes pre written fate outside of a wish was a big no. The only time you were ever allowed to alter a universe was to grant a wish, or stop a merge. And hey, you TECHNICALLY stopped a merge right? Just... in a way that was unauthorised... even though you did your job, the way you did it would absolutely get you in hot water.
You glanced over at the screen, where L and Light were still talking but the topic of the case had changed for the time being. Thank gods... they were talking about food, ordering stuff for the taskforce. You knew the moment the topic went back to the case though, there was a major risk of the narrator hearing something he shouldn't.
"That was a dangerously close merge (y/n), DO NOT let it happen again" the narrator warned.
"Don't worry, I won't..." you replied.
"And file that report, it should take less than a day. Unless, of course... you're delaying it for a reason?"
"Dude chill, I'm just a bit backed up on reports that's all"
Fuck you were just digging yourself a bigger hole here, but you really couldn't do anything else about it. You'd have to submit a false report... god forbid anyone find out it's false. You needed to keep L alive though, if he dies then not only would the two universes where he already died to Kira and this one merge, but you'd be outed as having messed with a mortals timeline. Bad stuff, bad, bad stuff. You really didn't feel like being trapped in an inescapable cube for the rest of eternity.
You already kind of were... but at least you could move and and had other rooms and entertainment.
"I expect the report by tomorrow (y/n)" the narrator said.
"Yes sir!" You replied, keeping up your chilled out tone.
With that, he finally left. Not even so much as a goodbye, he just walked out and went off to bother some other guardian. You let out a heavy sigh, all the tension of being caught leaving your body.
"Fuck man-" you muttered.
You were off Scott free, for now...
That report though, you had to submit one for an event that DID'NT happen. You dreaded what would happen if anyone found out the report was false. You needed to warn L about this...
You ended up waiting until it was night in his universe so no one else was around, and to be sure the narrator wasn't going to come back for something anytime soon. Zapping him into your room, he didn't even flinch when he found himself out of his seat and sitting on the floor of your room.
"Oh- hello (y/n)" he simply stated.
"Holy shit L I almost got caught-" you said.
"What? How?"
He was a little worried, not just because if you got caught he'd be left to fend for himself in this case, but because he'd grown to care for you a lot recently.
"That bitch boss of mine showed up unannounced again, made me SHOW HIM your universe because I haven't filed the report from the merge alert yet... luckily I was able to bullshit my way out of things but I'm having to file a false report now. He knows who you are, and Light... and Ryuk. So seriously do NOT get caught talking about anything you know from me ok? I have no idea if or when he'll check up on your universe" you explained.
Yikes, you were both treading a very fine line here. L was already being cautious not to give away the fact he essentially knew the future to the taskforce, but now he made a note to be extra cautious how he worded things just in case it wasn't just you watching him.
"I think I've gotten Light onto the path of discovering the multiverse for himself, so as long as he isn't stupid and completely misses the point, I hopefully won't even HAVE to probe him anymore" L explained.
"Good, if it looks like he didn't get the information from you it'll be tons less suspicious. I mean he has a pet shinigami, it's not a stretch to say he learnt it from that"
You were in the clear for now, but you couldn't shake the feeling something was going to go very wrong. And if that was the case... you'd better start thinking of a plan B.
