Chapter 1 | copy, paste
All he did was blink, and the world around him completely changed. He was staring at the computer screen reading 'all data deletion' dread filling his body, having just watched his father figure keel over dying. And then... he was here.
Where was here? He'd never seen this place before. It looked like a big, dark, empty room. The walls were a greyish-blue, as was the ceiling and floor. There were a few items scattered about, some books, an empty cup that once held something pink, a pencil case and a desk with some papers on it. The wall he stood before was lit up, the room he was just in shown on it like it was a screen. The taskforce all seemed confused, panicked. The chair he sat in moments ago was now empty and the taskforce stood around it in shock.
Did he... teleport?
"Oh thank fuck that worked"
The detective jumped at the noise, turning around to find the rest of the room behind him. From the roof, a bed hung from chains and was littered with blankets and pillows. String lights down the chains and a canopy concealing it. On said bed, leaning up against a backrest pillow was a person. In their lap, a computer keyboard and mouse off to the side.
"Wh-" was all he could get out.
"Sorry man, I kinda had to act fast"
They looked like an adult, with (h/c) hair and (s/c) skin, seemed tired, and wore loose pyjamas.
"Oh yeah I should probably explain..."
"Please?" L replied, completely at a loss for what was happening.
"I'm (y/n), and you my dude, almost died" you began.
"... what?"
You shouldn't really be surprised at his shocked state, did just cut and paste him out of his world and into your box. That, and he was human. Not many humans get to experience something like this.
"The death note, Rem was wrote your name on lights behalf but I pulled you out before 40 second was up. So you're not dead, nothing can die in this room, it's like a space between worlds so nothing harmful can effect us" you explained.
L felt his brain short circuiting. Here's this person he's never met, talking like they know his whole life story.
"Where am I?" He asked.
"My box. Technically it's a time room but I call it the box. I mean look at it, box shaped" you replied.
"That tells me nothing"
You sighed, this would be harder than you thought...
"Ok listen up. I'm a guardian, not a god or a ghost or anything like that. I'm a being of energy, and my job is to watch the multiverse and fix any messed up timelines. You weren't meant to die, and I didn't think you would so when I saw Rem write your name I kind of panicked and bought you here. There's already a timeline where you die, can't have two of the exact same timeline" you explained.
"Multi- hang on there's more than one universe?" He asked, the shock turning into an intrigue and confusion now.
L had never been religious, if there truly was a god, then he wouldn't have gone though what he did as a child. And according to you, you weren't a god but an entity. So he was in a way, correct in his assumptions. But the proof of the existence of shinigami, and death notes as a whole, made him more open to the supernatural. You could say he became more spiritual, but he'd never bow to a deity figure. So this, being snatched out of his universe and into a space between worlds, that made him very intrigued. A little scared... but intrigued nonetheless.
"Yeah man, every choice made, every path taken. That's a universe. There's worlds where tragedies never happened, where historical figures where never born, where one different choice changed the whole outcome of a timeline. But there's one rule, there are no two universes that are the same. That can't happen... if it did, boom. Those two universes would merge and there's be double of everyone in them. That'd be a huge mess to clean up" you explained.
"And there's a universe where I already died?"
"Yep, so you can't die this time"
It was an odd feeling, knowing a version of him lost the battle with Kira. But at the same time, there were several universes where he's won that battle. But the universe he called home, his battle was still ongoing now you'd plucked him from his death.
"There's a ton of versions of you out there. All slightly different. One where you're fully Japanese rather than half, one where you're a girl, one where you're not a detective at all, endless possibilities dude" you added.
"... now you have me curious what girl me looks like" He replied, with a slight snicker.
You pressed some buttons on your keyboard, and the screen behind him changed. He noticed the lighting shift as the screen changed and he turned to face it. On said screen was himself... herself. A woman who looked like she could be his twin. Same height, same skin, same hair colour. But clearly female bodied with the same white shirt and blue jeans fitting differently. Hair slightly longer and face more rounded and softer. She was sitting at a desk, working on a case, same crouched position, same cup of tea he always had. By all means that was him, just bodily a female.
"Oh... wow that does look like me..." he muttered.
"Your name is gender neutral too, so she has the same name. L Lawliet but with boobs" you snickered.
"You know my name?" He asked, turning back to face you confused.
"Yeah man, I can look up everyone's names. If you exist, I can see you. Although obviously I can't go through every single person to ever exist, I only watch the universes that need monitoring and step in where I have to"
L looked back up at girl him, who had gotten up to grab some books from a shelf. She pulled one out, a second one getting caught and falling off the shelf into her chest.
"OW- fu-" she muttered.
"Ouch. Girl version of being hit in the balls" you laughed.
L winched at the comparison. Hopefully girl him would be ok... He turned back to you, taking another look at you. Something seemed off about you, not in a bad way through. But you seemed... inhuman almost.
"You... aren't human, but you look like one..." he muttered.
"That's just how you see me. Describe me" you replied.
"About... this tall..." he began, gesturing to your height compared to his "your hair is (h/c) and your skin is (s/c), you look like a (gender)... and you're wearing pyjamas"
"Huh, figures. Your brain is seeing me human looking, because that's what your mind can comprehend. You'd probably get brain fog if you saw my true form"
"What do you look like?"
You pondered a moment, how did you deceive it to a human? You weren't sure... you weren't exactly humanoid.
"I'm... like a galaxy I guess. I'm a bunch of energy that looks kind of like stars and I can take whatever shape I want. I can choose my gender, name, likes and dislikes. By all means I'm a person, just not human" you explained.
L wasn't sure how to picture that, but he expected it to me rather magical looking. Curiously he approached you, wanting to get a closer look now he'd noticed the slightly inhuman look you had to his eyes. You held out a hand, allowing him to touch you. Hesitantly he took it, and you held his hand in yours.
"It feels like any other human. Although... tingly..." he commented.
"Yep, you can interact with me just like any other human. I can feel you too, your hands are cold" you replied.
This was all happening so fast and he was beyond confused, but he was also wildly interested in all of this. A room in between worlds, where a not quite god resided and watched over the multiverse... fascinating.
"Listen man, you're gonna be here a hot minute while I figure out how I'm going to fix this. Sit down, chill out, I can get you snacks or something" you said, shifting your position to sit more comfortably.
"You got mochi?" He asked.
"What flavour?"
"... strawberry"
"Done"
All you did was snap your fingers, and I'm a small burst of sparks right before him, a pack of strawberry mochi appeared. He caught it as it fell, blinking in amazement. This was one hell of a twist he wasn't expecting... but it sure was an interesting one.
